2022 Transfer Season

My comfort level with this team just went through the roof. I have been worried about the games where we needed some muscle to offset the other team’s big post. Having to double down with a wing or help side defender puts everyone in scramble mode. Now Faye can play Lee and other similar players heads up without compromising Schaefer’s fundamental defense. She’s a game changer in many of the games. I need more video of her play to see how her offensive game fits. But even if she averages 5 points a game, her defensive presence is plus plus.

Yep. Kansas and Kansas State especially have 2 of the best Centers in the Big 12, and Lee is an All-American and one of the best in the country. Being able to hold your own against them is why I was so disappointed to see Lauren Ebo leave. But, so happy to have Taylor Jones and Hadi Faye join the squad to present problems down low for our opponents.

Mooo…..thanks for the video clips. In addition to the big centers at the schools you mentioned, Iowa State added a really big big transfer. Don’t remember her name but she seemed a major addition for that team. Fay negates that advantage some. Outside the conference, there are quite a few like them with teams Horns might match up with in the tournament.

Iowa State landed Stephanie Soares from the NAIA, daughter of Longhorn Susan Anderson.

We all saw how Stanford's size inside and length on the wing wore us down in March. So, getting "bigger" through offseason additions was going to be critical for our team if we expect to compete with "big" teams in South Carolina, Stanford, UConn and Tennessee (I'm sure there are few others with elite size).

While Faye still has a ways to go offensively (not as much as Femme, IMO), her natural instinct to block shots and her determination to rebound are hard skills to find these days, especially from a post player who can run the floor better than most players her size. If she commits to beating her player down the court on offense, she could be in for some uncontested transition layups.

One of the best things about Taylor Jones and Hadi Faye is that they have played for P5 programs; so, they've faced strong competition overall in their college careers. Iowa State's Stephanie Soares could end up being elite this season, but she played 4 seasons against NAIA opponents.

Mooo….points well taken. The first Stanford game, Matharu went crazy from BTA in fourth. In second game, their size and mobility really impacted our ability to score. Schaefer said that the team was good enough to be a final four team…..but Horns “couldn’t score” in the fourth. Stanford extended their defense out to keep Matharu from repeating first game feat. Matharu scored exactly 0 points in the GAME. Morris will give us one difference maker from BTA and may keep that phenomenon from happening again. I’m hoping Jones will give us the offensive threat from the blocks that would keep teams from extending defense out. Ebo couldn’t do that against Brink. In combo with Morris outside….and Jones and Faye inside….blanketing Matharu may not be a good strategy for teams. And I think Faye starts over Masudi. Schaefer has many more options now to keep what happened in that fourth quarter from happening. Make no mistake, Schaefer is building to make the Final Four. Elite 8 is no longer good enough.

Yes! Dependent on so many newcomers, I thought we had a Sweet 16 team going into last season and would be thrilled if we exceeded that, which of course we did.

Agree. This season, I feel anything less than Final 4 would be a perplexing underperformance. Good times ahead in a shiny new crib.

The UTEP WBB coach is saying that transfer players are non-binding until the new school gives them institutional aid and his top two won’t be on campus until July and other schools are trying to poach them (Jazion Jackson & N’yah Boyd). He said every time they call them and they don’t answer he gets nervous and plans for future transfers to be on campus in June.
On that note. Is Sonya Morris on campus yet?

That's true. Pretty much what happened with Esmery Martinez (signed ASA with LSU; then signed a second with Arizona). Kind of also happened to us with Harvard grad-transfer, Katie Benzan (although that had to with our head coaching change).

HA!
Esmery Martinez:
High School -> signed ASA with Texas -> ends up at WVU -> signs ASA with LSU -> ends up at AZ.

Agree with everything except the "perplexing underperformance" part. Sometimes the difference in the E8 and F4 comes down to one basket, one bad call, one critical mistake, one point in 3 OT, etc... I wouldn't call losing a game and failing to make a F4 under those circumstances underperformance. Now showing up in the E8 and not competing?.. different story.

Faye will play over Masudi, but start no. I see Moore and Gaston sharing the 4 spot and Jones and Faye at the 5 spot. Jones is also a 4 player so LOTS of options now. What a deep, talented frontcourt. Opposing teams finally have to guard all 5 players. I look for Matharu and Morris to tear it up with way more open looks.

From the AAS story about Khadija’s transfer:

"I might not be done," Schaefer said. "I think it's safe to say we're a work in progress right now and just continuing to try to make our team as good as we can."

My opinion has been that a backup PG would be the biggest need remaining. Or, someone who is a really good 3-point shooter. Is that being too greedy? :p

Glad to see Vic has changed his tune from one year ago as far as really taking advantage of the transfer portal. He had commented that he wouldn't bring in a transfer if it would impact the development of his younger players; something tells me that Lattimore's unexpected decision to transfer out made him look at things differently.

Even though we didn't land Rickea Jackson or Lauren Fields, they did take official visits. So, when you add those targets to the 3 transfers we did end up landing, and Vic saying he may not be done yet, that's for sure being active/aggressive working the transfer portal.

I especially liked his quote: "My job is to make the team here at the University of Texas the best women's basketball team we can, and I feel really good about our inside game right now." And, the transfer portal is how you do it, Vic!

I noticed that Kobe hasn’t been in any of the off season training photos but I chalked it up to her not starting school until the 2nd summer term.

It’s unfortunate that injuries prevented her from playing last season. Kobe always provided a lot of smiles and positive energy to the team. I hope she finds happiness and fulfillment on her next journey.

It's unusual timing considering the deadline to enter the transfer portal for that one-time exception has long passed. And, most if not all schools already started their first summer session.

I didn't really pay attention to whether she want back home for a few weeks after the Spring semester.

I’m going to miss her. She provided so much energy and was a true team player. Her departure now opens up a scholarship. Vic already said he may not be done so I assume he knew a while back. We desperately need a backup pg and if we add anyone else after it would just be a bonus but I still want Gonzales from BYU.

Best of luck Kobe:hookem:

You can always use another great guard in case of injury, and I hope that we do sign another, but I don’t see it as such a desperation. We have two very capable point guards.

Sonya Morris has been a backup PG her entire career and averaged over 3APG last season. She will fill that role well.

And best of luck to Kobe, i hope she finds somewhere that fits her better and also hoping that citing her mental health is not in the same vein as AC.

I agree. I don’t get all the concern about backup pg with Hunter, Matharu and Morris all capable.
