2022 Transfer Season

Also, it’s an incredibly pale group relative to the sport they play.

That part! This probably won't be popular but I'm going to say it anyway... Racial bias is alive and well in WCBB and I find it very disturbing. The naming of the Cheryl Miller award the past two years was full of it, and I suppose there will be a trifecta of the bullsh*t after this coming season. What a freakin' joke.

Edit: Not saying that A. Joens is not an outstanding player because she definitely is. But to have received that honor (twice) over "less marketable" yet much more deserving players like R. Howard is totally absurd.

Since we're left scouring the web for clues (or even just wishful thinking), someone mentioned Ahlise Hurst from Oregon earlier in this thread. Its no secret that Rori and Ahlise have been inseparable lately. Ahlise has used 4 years of eligibility and is not in the portal to my knowledge. She's still listed on Oregon's roster, but I believe she'd be a grad student so she wouldn't need the portal or to seek a waiver. She is one helluva shooter (over 1000 pts in her career). Wonder if she is a possibility? It looks like she's spent a lot of time on campus with Rori in the last month or so. Here's a friendly game of Pig from the end of the season:

Coach Sydney Carter started following Ahlise Hurst on Instagram, and vice verse. And, Hurst also started following Ndjakalenga and Taylor Jones.

Could be nothing but "social" follows as she appears to be in Austin hanging out with Rori. But, since Carter started following her, decided to mention it. As far as I know, there's been no recent news that she entered the transfer portal; but, not all entries are reported on social media.

I didn't see it that way. I saw Rhyne Howard and Kentucky losing 10 of 13 games in the middle of the season and was on the outside looking in until they made an incredible run in the SEC tournament to qualify for the NCAA tournament but were immediately bounced by an Ivy League team, Princeton, in the first round; whereas, Ashley Joens led Iowa State to a program record 28 victories and into the Sweet 16.

Although Rhyne Howard is better suited for the WNBA and will have a better professional career, I'd still give Ashley Joens the award over Howard because she had the better season.

The award(s) are supposed to recognize the most outstanding players at the respective positions. Howard was a two-time SEC POY and also named SEC all-defensive team in addition to numerous national and international awards.
Call it what you want...
I call bullsh*t.

Looks like the team is at Vic’s house doing team activities and it’s what Vic does when he has a recruit on campus so I’m sure Gonzales is on campus right now. If you look at the instagram story of Moore you can see a reflection in the window and I think it may be Gonzales:D lol but with the recent follows of Carter and Blair I’m 85% sure she’s here for a visit.

Shaylee Gonzales started following Longhorn volleyball standout, Logan Eggleston on Instagram. Perhaps they discussed their existing NIL deals . . .

I looked at her ig account this past season and her and Eggleston have been following each other for quite a while now. Before the season to be exact but even better for Texas.

Perhaps she did an unfollow and then a new follow. When I looked at who Shaylee is following just a few minutes ago, Eggleston's name displayed at the top. When I looked at Eggleston's followers, Shaylee's name displayed third from the top.

I see what you’re saying. Very interesting since they have been following eachother for a while. Either she did do an unfollow or Shaylee just wasn’t following Eggleston back. Either way it is a new follow on her part so it is interesting.

How does Shaylee Gonzales move the needle for the 22/23 season?

A talented player, but Texas already has guards that do what Shaylee does. I don't think more numbers at a position is necessarily a good thing with a packed roster of 15.

I'm not seeing it.

I personally think she will go to Oregon or Oregon state. If she doesn’t choose Texas then we will be just fine but, she is a player you want on your team. I think what Vic likes is her ability to score off the dribble, in transition, and her hustle/defense. She would thrive in Vic’s dribble drive offense and gives us more depth at the 3 spot although she can play 1-3. She would be a great addition to the team and only help us. After further video review I’d take Matharu and Morris but if she’s interested you can’t just dismiss that.

All good points.

One school of thought is you put 4 or 5 players out there, each with limited minutes of course, then let the cream rise to the top.

We know Vic likes to eventually settle on a more or less fixed lineup of 8-9 players as the season progresses into the heart of B12 play. With 15 players, that is a lot of bench time for those that don't make the cut. I don't know enough about Vic's history to know if he is OK with 2 or 3 of those bench riders seeking more playing time elsewhere.

Heck, I have zero experience with a Texas coach managing a 15-player roster since it hasn't happened in my memory. Others here may recall a similar situation, I sure don't.

I believe Vic's last few rosters at MSU were closer to 15 than 10. Gotta say, I love it. I was never a fan of Gail Goestenkors' small rosters at Texas.

Times are just so different now. After the Fall semester started last season, we lose Precious Johnson to transfer. Then in late November, we lose Ashley Chevalier. Just like that, we're down 2 players; that's tough to absorb during the season. So, those examples alone make me prefer a 14-15 player roster instead of an 11-12 player roster.

On top of those outgoing transfers, we also sustained injuries to Aaliyah Moore, Kyndall Hunter, and Kobe early in the season that pretty much lingered most of the season in some form or fashion. Not sure if we had anyone out for any COVID protocols (maybe Ebo for one game), but I remember ISU had to keep the Joens sisters out of our game in Ames.

I can understand that with a 15-player roster not everyone is going to play every game. And, not everyone is going to be happy with the number of minutes they play per game. But, these days, the reasons to have a large roster outweigh the reasons to go with a small roster.

Well, yeah. It's easy to do when you're beating the brakes off everybody and up 30 early in the 2nd half.
There were more close games that season than one might think. Even in the national championship game vs. USC this happened:

"Texas averages 30 points from its bench, and, as usual, all 11 Texas players played Sunday. The non-starters were the key for Texas, which had a huge, 58-4 advantage in bench-scoring."

Just gotta open up 30 point leads by halftime. That’ll clear the bench. Get on it ladies!

I'm going to breathe a sigh of relief once I see that Sonya Morris is enrolled in the 2nd summer semester at UT. Since she's a grad transfer, she likely did not enroll in the first summer session because her graduation from DePaul was in early June. Hopefully her enrollment at Texas goes smoothly and without a hitch.

I'm very excited to add Morris to the roster. Her skill set and experience will be a great contribution to the team.

Shaylee started following a player from NC State on IG. So, assume that could mean she is currently on her official visit in Raleigh.

Better Louisville than Baylor or LSU, I guess. We could meet Louisville in the Bahamas in November:

It is amazing how the portal has changed college sports. The days of waiting until your HS pipeline bears fruit are over.

Have a need? Just scour the "minor leagues" for the top players who would love to test themselves against the best while raising awareness of their game.
