2022 Transfer Season

Decided to see how the Big 12 did with coaching changes that occurred this year. Least active team: OU
Most active team: OK-State

I missed the news that Kobe entered portal. Gonzales is starting to make much more sense now. I think most coaches would trade Kobe for Shaylee.

I'm honestly shocked that we are in contention for Gonzales. She has 2 seasons of eligibility remaining. I was assuming she would be a grad-transfer, but not positive. BYU did have a head coaching change a few weeks ago, so she'd most likely be eligible immediately at her new school.

I peeked at her Instagram page yesterday. The only Longhorn connection was an odd one -- former A&M hoopster and Longhorn grad-transfer hoopster, Danni Willaims recently started following Shaylee, and vice verse.

And, looking at Danni's IG page, she was recently practicing in a Nike KD Longhorn shirt and shorts. So, that was nice to see.

There is definitely a connection between Shaylee and Danni Williams. On Shaylee's current Instagram story showing practice (breakfast club), she tags Danni. I think that might be Danni moving in the background with her back turned to the camera.

Moore started following Gonzales
That was right around the time Shaylee was concluding her official visit at Texas around June 28.

Today, Shaylee started following Rori Harmon on Instagram, and vice versa. Really hope that's a good sign for us as it comes several days after her official visits to Texas and NC State.

I always look at follows after the visit as a good sign. Often times it means a commitment has been made and as future teammates the follow comes. Now this may not be the case at all and could just be a follow but I’m manifesting it being a commitment. If she begins to follow more players over the next couple of days then that’s a really good sign.

If the possibility of Shaylee Gonzales is costing the team Matharu, then I am concerned. Vic already recruited Kobe right off the roster. I suppose Matharu could have decided to transfer earlier and was just waiting until she could grad transfer.

Goes to show how limited and imperfect is our view of the inside workings of the team. Oh, to be a fly on Vic's office wall! Recruiting Shaylee Is making absolute sense now.

Could this be a reaction to a silent Shaylee commit?

Or it could be that Matharu’s plan all along was to graduate after first summer session which is wrapping up now. Now she can grad-transfer and play immediately.

Was Vic aware of that plan? Maybe.

Matharu appeared on a lot of the summer workout videos posted by Texas social media these last few weeks

This is a big loss for sure. From a defensive standpoint to 3 point shooting to really everything that we do so well. If this is a result of recruiting Gonzales, I’ll take Matharu over Gonzales everytime. I hope she changes her mind:(

This is NOT GOOD. Matharu IMO is better than Gonzales and more suited for our system. I REALLY HATE THIS. PLEASE Vic……make this go away……

Aliyah Matharu was one of my favorite players this past season. I had no idea what to expect after she transferred in from Miss. State, but watching her bury those 3-pointers against Stanford and A&M really made me a believer. Her quickness on both ends of the floor was refreshing and difficult for the opposition to contain.

No doubt we're gonna miss her. She was our leading returning scorer at 12 ppg, and was probably our best 3-point shooter heading into this season. 3-point shooting is the area where she will really be missed as we also lost Allen-Taylor and Warren who were good long-range shooters.

That being said, she had several games in the second half of the season where Vic was hesitant to play or leave her in the game early on for fear that she'd get into foul trouble; some were offensive fouls, some were on the defensive end. That led to her no longer being a starter, coming off the bench, and playing limited minutes.

In the post-season, this was her scoring output:

- Iowa State: 7 points
- Baylor: 5 points (very late in the 4th quarter)
- Utah: 14 points
- Ohio State: 10 points
- Stanford: 0 points

Thinking through the recruiting of Gonzales and Hunter not xferring, leads me to believe that Vic was made aware of the plan. And if that’s the case, best of luck to her!

Two cases:
Vic knew about this:
1. He let her keep practicing with the team so that she would be in shape for her next school
2. He is actively courting Gonzales because he knew she would be gone by fall
3. Told Kendall and that's why Hunter never entered the portal
4. UT Sports was ready for this information and thus the quick update of the online roster
Vic didn't know about this:
1. Unaware and she was practicing with the team
2. Hearing about Gonzales made her re-think her future with the team and it was a recent decision
3. Mad about this late decision and had UT Sports yank her name from the roster quickly
I think Vic knew about this. He has to know that she was close to enough credits to graduate and grad-transfer to play immediately? And must have had talks with her about it?

I've watched a few replays of last season and I see the biggest cheerleader in Kobe out there pumping up the team after great plays and wonder how can that super positive teammate want to immediately transfer? And then you see an unhappy Hunter (as cameras pan down the line) still with the team.

Confused.

Wow…. I’m very sad over this. And to scrub her name that quick??? No chance if her changing her mind now. I love Vic as our coach, but never felt like Matharu got a fair shake. I could be wrong, but the girl can flat out ball. Sorry, but Gonzales is not as good….
Obviously, there's nothing official that Shaylee is coming to Texas.

I think it's all relative as to how "good" Gonzales is compared to Matharu. She averaged 20 points a game at BYU, and I'm assuming played more minutes per game than Matharu. If she did come to Texas and averaged 15 points a game and 25 minutes per game, does that qualify as "better" than Matharu?

I keep thinking back to last year's roster. Matharu, Kobe, and Femme all transferred in after playing 2 seasons elsewhere. Kobe and Femme were listed as a "Sophomore" (due to COVID redshirt season), but Matharu was listed as a "Junior". I know several of us here discussed it, because it was inconsistent. Made me wonder if she was not gonna stay at Texas after receiving her undergraduate degree (in 4 years); well, she beat me to it by one year.

I'm not sure it's appropriate to assign blame without any of us knowing all the facts.

I do support a head coach who is always looking to improve their roster.

She sure was. So, was Sedona Prince back in the day . . . :p

With the loss of Matharu, getting Gonzales is an absolute must at this point. I’m not going to drive myself crazy with this. I trust Vic and what he has planned. It will all work itself out in the end. Best of luck to Matharu but it’s next man up and I hope Hunter comes into her own this year.

I know we had some previous discussions about who would be the backup point guard to Rori this coming season. Many felt Matharu could handle it in spot duty. Some of us were concerned about depth at the point guard position if Rori ever had to miss a game due to illness or injury.

If Gonazles is coming, perhaps she can help some at PG. If she's not coming, those same concerns at PG exist moreso now that Matharu has left. Hopefully, the rabbit in the hat for Vic is Gabby Connally.

And yeah....Ashley Chevalier was smiling for the cameras and giving high fives to her teammates a few days before entering the portal......
Latasha Lattimore always seemed to have a cheerful disposition on the sidelines when the TV cameras caught glimpses of her . . .
