2022 Transfer Season

Zig…..assuming you’re correct…..Wagner with Maul and Cunningham sounds good for 2023. I’m cautiously optimistic on Maul. A little less so on Cunningham. So if Schaefer is optimistic on those 3, then we’re done for 2022. Means backup point guard this year will be shared with several. HOWEVER……that’s a big risk. I think we’ll get someone else for 2022. There are so many variables that could happen to the roster to not get that guard. We’ll see soon.

"...Wagner with Maul and Cunningham sounds good for 2023."

I agree. Lauren Fields would really be an asset for 2022, but the numbers get real tricky since she supposedly also has 2 years of eligibility remaining.

It's a good problem, but a problem nonetheless.

Interesting that we will have 5 Juniors on scholarship next year vs only 1 with Aliyah this past season.

As the roster currently stands, any additional transfer ins will affect our 3 possible 2023 ships unless that transfer is a 1-year Senior. This assumes Aliyah elects to stay for her Super Sr extra year.

Actually, this roster accounting makes my head hurt since the portal makes everything so fluid. Plus, we still don't know if Abbie will be a walk-on in 2023.
I don't expect Kobe and Femme to end up using their super-senior season at Texas; coming from JUCO, I'd guess Vic promised them 2 seasons of being on scholarship at Texas in order to earn their undergraduate degrees. A third season beyond that was most likely dependent on their development and in-game performances.

That's possible, but highly speculative. After all, Texas listed them as Sophomores for '21/'22 and currently has them listed as Juniors for '22/'23. It would seem they would be on the '23/'24 roster.

As I said, this accounting is very fluid.

How many years of eligibility does Jones have? I read an Oregon article that says she has played there three years so only one year left plus the Covid year?

2. Oregon State lists her bio with two Sophomore years, which is their way of indicating the Covid year did not count for eligibility purposes.

When our roster is updated, it will be interesting to see how Taylor is listed. She may be listed as a Senior instead of a Junior, which is how Audrey, Jo, and Lauren were listed this past year, despite their Covid year eligibility. I suspect the Big12 and the Pac12 have different conventions for this accounting.

One thing that struck me about the sudden change in position yesterday ("haven't narrowed my list of finalists" to - "I have a winner and its coming in 5 days") is in hearing Vic on Tuesday talk about the new arena and how it commands the best team that you can possibly put on the floor.
This comment from the 2023 recruiting thread struck home with me.

One thing that would really close the book on worrying about available scholarship numbers would be if Texas announces 1 or 2 more transfer ins. It would telegraph that current scholarships are a privilege that can be revoked if a player is not working effectively towards mastering the system.

And April Phillips' astute comment about the new reality of the portal era could be one of our best recruiting tools.

My understanding is amongst the P5 schools you can't revoke a scholarship for any athletic reason. The Facts About “Guaranteed” Multi-year NCAA DI Scholarships Now you can certainly make them want to quit. You can have conversations that they won't play if they stay. But I don't think you can get to the end of the season and say we're not renewing your scholarship because we have someone better in the portal or coming in that needs your ship, or we're going to go find someone better.

Good point. Your comment in bold is a better way to express my point. The next couple of weeks will be highly revealing and highly entertaining.

It's my understanding that when a player comes out of high school and signs a scholarship agreement with a P5 school, it is for four years and can't be revoked (other than for rules violations, breaking the law, etc.). But, when a player walks on their first year, they could earn a scholarship in subsequent years 2-4, but it wouldn't be guaranteed for all those 3 years; it could be for one, two, or three years.

For JUCO's (after 2 years and graduating) signing a scholarship agreement with a P5 school, the scholarship is for 2 years.

For transfers signing a scholarship with a P5 school, I have no idea what's guaranteed. Taylor Jones could have a scholarship for 1 or 2 year2 guaranteed from Texas. Chevalier could have s scholarship for 2 or 3 years guaranteed from Texas Tech.

Gonna try to see how the roster numbers shake out for this coming season, and when 2023 recruits join the following season. Instead of listing by classification, I'm going to list by remaining eligibility:

2 years remaining:
Aliyah Matharu
Femme Masudi
Kobe King-Hawea
Taylor Jones

3 years remaining:
DeYona Gaston
Shay Holle
Aaliyah Moore
Rori Harmon
Kyndall Hunter

4 years remaining:
Amina Muhammad
Jordana Codio
Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda

Unsigned 2023 verbal commitments:
Abbie Boutilier
Sammie Wagner

At the moment, we have 3 scholarships available for this coming season; apparent transfer targets based on social media: Lauren Fields (official visit planned for Monday, April 25), Khadija Faye, Fatou Samb

2023 Gisella Maul will announce her verbal commitment on Monday, April 25.

I don't want to be that half-empty guy, but.......OSU lists Jones as a forward and I've seen some references to her as a post. The question is she came in to Texas with the understanding that Texas was going to use her as a post right?
I'm sure our coaches spoke with Taylor about how they plan to utilize her.

In 2.5 seasons at Oregon State, she never attempted a 3-point shot. And, with her high career shooting percentage (.583), that tells me she takes smart shots that are mostly close to the basket; not sure if she has a face-up game, or is more back-to-the-basket in her offensive style of play.

Taylor will obviously play the 5 spot or perhaps Vic just calls it a double post. Doesn’t matter. Her production is outstanding and I think she’ll only get better at Texas. This is a BIG pickup for us.

Here's a game that she played against Stanford.

Baylor fans thought they had a chance. Better Duke than Iowa State (where her younger 2023 sister is verbally committed) or Baylor.

Once Iowa St. got Stephanie Soares and the commitment from Audrey Crooks for 2023 you pretty much figured that she wasn't going there. I thought she would stay closer to home and go to Oklahoma.

They're a quality post player away from being a final four contender like Iowa St. IMO. But It's a nice pick up for Duke, and if they get Lattimore it'll be even nicer. Do we have any idea yet of whether or not Lawson can coach?

Good idea. This assumes you are correct about the 2-year JC transfer commitment. I assume you researched this and know it to be true.

Essentially, this would make next season a make-or-break year for Femme and Kobe. I hope they both surprise us with their development.

Actually, no, I did not research it; I don't think there would be anything out there about it, to be honest with you.

Think back to prior to pandemic. When a JUCO player arrived at a D-1 school, they had 2 years of eligibility remaining after playing 2 seasons at JUCO. That's what I'm basing this on. As you stated, the official roster had them listed as sophomores this past season (due to the COVID redshirt season); but, had Matharu listed as a junior. All 3 had already played 2 seasons before arriving at Texas. So, I'm not really sure why the inconsistency in classification.

I think it will all become clearer once we are done adding any incoming transfers, and the 2023 recruiting class finalizes.

Here's a game that she played against Stanford.

Well that settles it for me, for sure. Jones is a post player with a capital "P". Looks like she's had 2 matchups in her career with Elsa the ice queen and fared pretty damned well. Even in the 2nd matchup where she was outscored, she still outrebounded Brink. And that game was a Pac12 championship game so I'm sure the fatigue of playing 4 games in six days factored in as well (nonetheless, Jones was the leading rebounder in all 4 of those games, by the way).

In our final presser after the Stanford Elite8 loss, Lauren Ebo had a classic line when asked about her problems dealing with Brink that night: "credit them for their natural gift of their size." Great quote Lauren - LOL! So Jones is a major part of the solution to that problem, and I predict is going to be a real difference maker for us in games against elite bigs. Here's her stat-line in the 2 contests she played against this years' 3rd team all-american center (sorry I couldn't get the formatting to work right):

February 13, 2021 - #5 Stanford vs. OSU (unranked)
Starter Min FG 3PT FT OREB DREB REB AST STL BLK TO PF PTS
C. Brink 15 5-7 1-1 2-2 1 2 3 0 0 2 1 4 13
T. Jones 32 6-11 0-0 1-2 5 10 15 2 1 2 1 5 13

March 5, 2021 - #4 Stanford vs. OSU (unranked)
Starter Min FG 3PT FT OREB DREB REB AST STL BLK TO PF PTS
C. Brink 30 9-13 1-3 5-7 5 6 11 1 0 4 0 1 24
T. Jones 24 2-6 0-0 2-2 3 10 13 1 1 3 2 4 6

looks like we had a few visitors on campus for the moody center opening. Taylor jones was there so I bet we had a few other prospects there as well

Adding 2023 Gisella Maul to the (future) puzzle. Scholarship numbers getting tighter for the 2023-24 roster. A lot will depend on any seniors and if they remain at Texas for their super-senior seasons, and how many additional transfers we add for the coming season, as well as their years of eligibility.
