2022 Transfer Season

Another thing... could be entering the portal to weigh options. Entering the portal does not necessarily mean one MUST leave. You never know what all factors may be going on behind the scenes.
Agree. I admit to reflexively assuming portal entry = bye, bye.

Was thinking the same thing. But, the percentage of players who end up returning to the same school after entering the transfer portal is probably very low (in all sports). Still, she could be weighing her options since her second post position coach has moved on; so, maybe taking some official visits while we hire a new post coach will ensure she has all her bases covered.

UT has great graduate programs in all areas I'm sure, but I know when I graduated I was encouraged to go to a different university for graduate school. Different professors, different perspectives. I appreciate how hard Ebo played this year and wish her the best.

I wonder if Vic told his 3 Seniors, you all were great contributors to our success this season but….I have young and very good players I need to give a full commitment and playing time to next season. Thank you for everything you did this year but the future is in the youth on the team. Vic was good to all of them but he has some studs coming in and girls on the bench that he wants to develop. No bad feelings. Simple as that.

If I were a betting person, that's where I'd place my chips.

I would agree if Vic had a center that was legitimately ready to take the starting role and run with it. Masudi is in no way ready. Lattimore is more of a wing and to light to he a center. Of the three "studs" , none is a true center.

Ebo exceeded my expectations from what I saw initially. In my fair and biased opinion she was not an adequate player in the full court pressure defense. More mobility for sure would be an enhancement….although I was amazed at her stamina. Her physicality was a big plus defensively. Sure hate to have gone up against Lee without her. Offensively she was a plus until going against very tall centers. There are ways to play and win without a true center like her. But for sure am not looking forward to having to witness those ways. Schaefer will add. It should be soon…..based on all the activities in the portal. I’ll be checking here multiple times a day. Ya’ll let us know. And Ebo was a good player, teammate and representative of Texas.

This one right here! No way Vic gave Lauren the send off when she was our only sure bet as a true 5.

Yeah we got great young talent, but Vic said "I have a young and immature team" more times than I can count this season, I find it hard to believe he wasn't wanting his only true experience returning. He wouldve taken all three back if he could've I would imagine.

Still hoping Audrey stays.

Audrey was frustrating at times. Other times she was a huge blessing. She has a sweet stroke in the mid-range game…..and that is needed…..and we don’t have that in any player right now. Holle maybe later. I would welcome Warren back in a heart beat.

Unless I missed it, JAT was not drafted in WBNA tonight.
You are correct. I mostly saw projections of her going in the 3rd round. She’ll probably get a training camp contract but it’s a safe bet she’ll be playing overseas at first.

Those same immature players will be a year older next year. I think Audrey is a warrior and does a lot of the little things that help a team win. But I also think that there are players on the roster and coming in that give the team more potential up-side than what she brings. IMO, her returning would just create a log jam at the position. I would much rather see the younger players compete for playing time.

Kurupt you nailed exactly what I was getting at "create a log jam". Vic realizes he can not take elite players like Lattimore, Moore and Gaston and have them sit on the bench watching 5th year seniors playing their potential minutes this upcoming season. They paid their dues and Lattimore and Moore are potential All American level players that were held back last season with past and present injuries. I'm not sure about Masudi ever developing into a big contributor. She doesn't have the hands or instinct, but she seems to have the right work ethic to improve. Plus Muhammed and Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda will need to get their minutes. I do believe Vic may pick up a center and maybe a guard from the portal if the perfect opportunity is there. If there is not players out there that fit his system he will go with what he's got and continue to develop them and Win! The elite 8 is his minimum standard at Texas.

Pretty much my thoughts EXACTLY.

Mulkey liked to bring portal players in who won time from her recruits, but it never seemed to stop her from finding success on the recruiting trail. It's just a sleazy practice, in my opinion (and thus, quite suitable for the SeaHag) and should only be done when you can get a clear upgrade over a player who, for whatever reason, is failing to develop as hoped. It can be justified by the coach to his roster without having the players feeling like the coach will back-stab them at the first opportunity.

Okay now it makes me wonder what’s going on with the program. I hope it’s nothing bad and it’s just Vic telling our seniors he wants to go with our young talent and develop them for the future. I’m going to go with that since none of our non seniors have entered the portal. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

I tend to look at graduating seniors moving on as a positive thing. Positive in that the younger players Vic has recruited are going to be able to now step up and step in. Positive in that perhaps it means that we have a suitable transfer with some experience coming in. Positive in that the seniors are taking advantage of their extra year to play elsewhere and further their educations. Honestly, I was really surprised that JAT gave up her extra year of eligibility.

When they announced the COVID bonus year, I thought it was a mistake. I don't want to be a hypocrite and say I haven't enjoyed the presence of 5th year players on our Longhorn team(s). But the huge number of players in the transfer portal with no place to go plus freshman and sophmores bumping against the top-heavy classes is now showing. Vic game them a senior night knowing they wouldn't be back. I don't think there's anything wrong with the program.

I don’t see Seniors leaving for another program (especially a bonus year) as an internal problem at all. They both played under Vic for the first two years of his time at Texas and we see graduate students going elsewhere all the time and don’t raise an eyebrow. Hold off on the handwringing this seems fairly normal in this day and age to me.

Yep. The fifth year of eligibility is really the thing that’s reeking havoc on wbb right now, not the portal. Which is why grad transfers should be viewed differently than just your regular transfers and fifth year players. And as you said, they participated in senior day for a reason.

I don’t have a problem with what Mulkey does. How is it any different than when the coach basically recruits over the players already on the roster for a better player in high school?

I like that we've receiving this portal news. To me it means Vic has made his intentions known and things are moving along. Now, we just need a coaching staff!

This one makes me sad. It will be really hard to see Audrey in another school's jersey. I hope she transfers out of conference.
I would think she would look out of conference but her family members are big-time OU fans if I recall correctly. That said, I think OU has most of their players returning so I'm not sure how she would fit into that scenario.

I agree. Not happy about this one at all. Audrey is such a great utility player, is a great defender, sets the tone for other players, has even bailed us out more than a few times when no one else could score, and would be a keeper on any team in my book. She's also a wonderful person and teammate based upon the many interviews I've seen with her. ISU, KSU and OU all kept their essential super seniors - and that will be the main reason they can contend next year. We're losing all of ours which kind of negates the advantage of the extra year. I was really hoping Audrey would finish here, but I totally appreciate the 4 years she gave to this program. No one can ever say she didn't give this program everything she had.

We are all appreciative of what the Seniors brought to the program, both on and off the court. That is not the issue.

The issue is we will enjoy a better product next year. Too many are sleeping on this roster, sans Seniors. Coach knows what he's about. I can't wait.
