2022 Coaching Carousel

Dang! I did not see that coming. Congrats to Coach April.

Even up until the last minute, she seemed to be working it for Texas out on social media following Esmery Martinez, Ashley Owusu, Kennedy Brown, and Taylor Jones. She also seemed like the key recruiter for 2023 Breya Cunningham. We'll need someone with that energy to take her place.

Go get me Katie Faulkner from Washington, and let's have her re-win the recruiting battles for Kennedy Brown and Taylor Jones like when she was at Oregon State :p

Dammit, I really liked April! Based upon the press release, it looks like Vic had some notice on this one - at least enough time to release a statement. He's really got a tough job right now if he's having to navigate the transfer circuit while also trying to get new coaches in place.

It’s a testament to who we’ve had come through the program that they’re so highly sought after. But dang it sucks. Wishing nothing but the best of them but agree that it feels hard to be competitive for transfers with uncertainty.

It honestly wouldn’t surprise me if Calamity went as well. That would be wild though.

Texas admin is going to have to pony up the dough. We’ve got to get (the right) people in soon. Really hope it doesn’t take as long as last time.

Seems like a few leads here. Anyone who wants to lead a program should give us a hard look. There’s a nice track record here!

Maybe Vic has some people in mind from his search last year to replace Coach Harris. He definitely needs to fill at least one of the vacancies at a quicker pace than last year.

Didn't see that coming. I thought Calamity the one moving on first. At this point, I'm more worried about keeping the roster intact than adding any transfers. Again, that's a ton of turnover the last two years for Vic. Coaching continuity is important. Hopefully Vic can get someone in sooner rather than later.

The first thing Vic needs to ask during interviews is who can be in for the long run. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy for them as they all deserve it but it’s hard to build relationships and convince recruits when our coaches constantly leave.

That’s tough. There aren’t many Chris Daileys out there. If he hires established, well-respected assistants, they could be gone in 1-2 seasons. The alternative is to hire really promising young candidates. I doubt he’d hire 2 young coaches this go round, I’d like to see 1 of each (sooner rather than later).

In order to have coaches that stay longer you more than likely have to hirer someone that's a little green.

Ok so bare with me cause I know how yal like to fight on this forum but I’m asking for to much if I was to say he already has great replacements on the bench. Blair, Dillingham, Grant and Holmes. He could pick any of them to move up. They’re all young, former players, and know what he expects. I get it Nneka or Dilliard or a great JuCo coach to go with them. If they are going to get a shot why not? Talk me down but in my head it makes some sense for at least 2 of the 4 to move up. I hope Reed doesn’t leave JSU because that wouldn’t be a good look on her part after her strong words about knocking the wall down and personally as a black person I want to see a HBCU get into mix for top recruits and win in the tournament and challenge to be on top. He will have top candidates chomping to get on because UT pays more to ast than other schools off the top

Dom crossed my mind a bit earlier but, unless he can get them to change university (possibly state employment) policy, Blair can’t be an assistant coach for Vic. As for Jaz? Waaay too green. Has Erin Grant ever coached or even want to?

Another name that pops into my head is Sydney Carter unless Taylor convinced her to stay at her alma mater she did play pg for Blair while Vic was there. She would be a great get as well. Joy Cheek is another wish list name right age, played in power 5 and The W, and is due for associate AST Job. Courtney Jaco also is USC with Nneka and is primed to break through. Of course I have no idea which way Vic will go or who is dying to work under him while having Harmon and Moore here. That would help boost any coaches resume.

It seems like days ago we were all in here trying to figure out who our new coaches would be and we were all throwing out Nneka’s name. Here we are again doing the same thing and this time I’m even more lost as the first time.

Texas was voted the “best job” last month from a poll of about 30 power 5 coaches so I know we won’t have any problems attracting good coaches it’s just a matter of who Vic wants around him and who can really develop players. I say we take an experienced coach to work with our guards and a young but still experienced coach for the post position coach. I still want Nneka to get a chance.

I’m ok with the coaching turn over because it means a few things…..
1. That we’re hiring the best
2. We’re winning
I agree with you because I don't believe assistant coaches changes are detrimental to a program. I mean, everyone (head coaches, players and even recruits) knows assistant coaches aspire to be head coaches someday. I think player choices are more about the head coach, the program, the facilities, the community and the university.

If Vic would consider a juco coach, Trenia Tillis Hoard at Tyler Jr. College could be a prospect. She went to SFA in Nacogdoches and still holds some records from her time there. Played overseas. Has been at TJC for 20 plus years and most recently coached her team to the national juco championship. She may not be interested in moving up since I’m sure her success has likely brought her offers.

Tillis Hoard and Vic are not strangers. Their paths have crossed twice; first when she was a player at SFA and he was a coach at a rival school, Sam Houston State. At that time, each team was a member of the Southland Conference. She won the Southland POY in 1994. Vic likely remembers what a good player she was as his team had to defend her.

They also spent a year together as assistant coaches under Gary Blair when he was the HC at Arkansas. They coached together from 1999-2000. From that point forward, Tillis Hoard has been at TJC.

I think there are some assistant coaches out there who do not (or no longer) aspire to be head coaches. I think Stanford and South Carolina have one or two of them. Maybe Shannon Perry at UCLA is the same. Bill Brock was one for Mulkey at LSU.

Or, maybe some of those are waiting for a "big" opening instead of facing the struggles of leading a program with less success and financial support.

I just hope Vic moves faster with his hires this time around. He has 2 openings for sure; if Calamity leaves for Illinois (which is pure tea leaf reading on my part), then he has to replace his entire coaching staff. There's no time to waste!
