2021 Recruiting - Football

This is supposedly Foster's mom. He plays with commit Hayden Conner on the Katy Taylor OL

Kind of a non-statement, really. More of a universal truth. Every recruit is looking out for his own self-interest first.

Here is what Roach wrote about Clayton Smith
Clayton Smith, LB, Texarkana Texas High – Picked to Texas
Smith has been a big priority for the Texas staff recently. He was originally set to visit Austin during the spring game, but he will need to reschedule until after the dead period is lifted. Texas has a few links to Smith through his brother Devin — who played for Texas staffer Bob Shipley at Coppell, played with cornerbacks coach Jay Valai and under defensive coordinator Chris Ash at Wisconsin. Smith has been to Texas more times than any other school, and Texas has strong footing within his recruitment. LSU and Florida State could be tough, but I think Texas is quietly surging right now.
This guy is a real aggressive player and could be a WR also. A real gem.

i don't know. sometimes a kid's self-interest is motivated by staying with his friends. friends and boyfriends/girlfriends sometimes choose to go to college together. it's cool for them.

her reply could have to do with that not being the case with him, or that she doesn't plan on letting that be the case.

With the shortage we have at LB and the glut we have at receiver, hoping he is legit head hunter. Have commented about our recruiting philosophy several times and people with orange glasses just complain that 'hey we have high ranked classes". We have had good ranked classes but they are too heavy in the receiver classes. We must have more than 20 receivers on the roster. Need a more balanced process so we dont have holes like we do now.

We offered LB Jaydon Williams (6'2,194) from South Oak Cliff - says he runs a 4.4. Has long arms. Quick twitch athlete and he loves Texas.

Well, this could all be blamed on Gil Brandt as he advocated always taking the best athlete available. Of course in the pros teams could trade to fill positional needs. In college, not as fluid a possibility.

As far as I'm concerned, the 2021 class will be a success if we can get 5 or 6 solid offensive linemen and at least 3 or 4 solid DE and 3 or 4 solid linebackers. We are a legit 3 deep at DT with about 6 guys that can play at a very high level. We aren't even close to that at DE. We need pass rushers and guys that can move quickly at linebacker.

I'm a bit worried that our DB quality is taking a hit but if those guys can show some real improvement this year I think we can close this class strong at DB.

Here is IT (Boyd & Wells) on Smith --

Clayton Smith, Texas High (Texarkana, TX) - OLB/DE (2021)
How he fits at Texas: Smith is a coiled up spring of fast twitch in a 6-foot-4 frame. For a defensive end coach, Smith is "the stuff dreams are made of." He's currently pretty light but it's easy to see him filling out like Joe Ossai and potentially even bigger as there's lots of room to pack muscle onto his frame. Smith also demonstrates a lot of ball skills in his receiver film and overall has a high level of coordination with his hands and feet in addition to being a twitchy, big framed athlete. This is the sort of defensive end prospect that makes a four-down defense look like the right answer. - IB

Coach says: Strengths - A tall and muscular player whose length will allow for more bulk. Long arms. Appears flexible and balanced in and out of his stance. Shows very good strength in both upper and lower body fighting through double teams. Above average lower body explosiveness. At least average acceleration and deceivingly good top straight line speed. Good lateral movement. Shows good instinct and discipline in run fits/gap assignment. Has active hands in pass rush and seems very disruptive with batting passes. “Good motor” would be an understatement here. Never gives up on a play and is quick to find work when his team intercepts. I have a sneaking suspicion this kid has a very high ceiling. Has some nice X-receiver highlights mostly as end-zone fades. I covet this kid.

Areas for Improvement / Concern: Tends to come on high on tackles which may be unavoidable at this height. As a result will lose some power on his strike (which would make him lethal). I worry a little bit about him being a tweener. Not a lot of film on him in space. Pass rush repertoire is lacking (but he’s producing mainly on raw strength and effort).

How this affects Texas: Another player the UT staff was on really early, the ETX -orn hybrid linebacker/D-end is being called a "Derrick Johnson clone" by scouts and for good reason. He's rangy, twitchy, hits through ball-carriers, and has the frame (6-foot-4, 215-220) for much more. This kid is a priority for Texas and that aligns with his priorities. OU, LSU, Oregon, and Texas A&M have made pushes during their pursuit, but the Horns have the upper hand today. His relationship with Oscar Giles is big as well. He's not ready to make a decision. That will probably come at the All American Bowl in San antonio, but I know Austin will be on his short list. For the record, he's visited Texas more than any other school. I don't see that changing either. I'm starting to really like this kid. - JW

Williams only played 5 games at LB last year after being moved from WR.

Nice to see us pursuing some speed at LB (Orlando never seemed to know what he wanted at this position).

Not sure yet about CB but the rest of the 2021 defensive class is starting to look pretty good. It appears that Ash and Hutzler are on the same page in terms of profile they want with Hutzler doing most of the legwork.

.....As for 2022, it’s all-in on Aledo’s Bryan Allen Jr., who might be the state’s top safety prospect regardless of class. He’s basically a long awaited IPO with a five-star rating, and probably the third best prospect in the state for the 2022 class.

Allen committed to LSU

This means LSU now has the top two 2022 safeties in Texas, who are ranked by 247 as the #2 and #4 safeties nationally

I think those of us who have criticized Herman's recruiting efforts in Texas need to qualify that the criticism isn't over the number of offers that go out to Texas kids - it is the results that count. Yes, Texas is offering a lot of kids in Texas, but very few are signing. DKR, Akers, and Mack's (except the latter years) offers were accepted - Herman not so much. As I said in another thread, it is tough and frustrating losing lower "ranked" Texas kids to Baylor, TCU and Tech only to have those kids school Texas on the field.

Just win, baby! Hard to sell "betting on the come" when reality has been mediocrity.

Possible front seven from this class
DL - Ja’Tavian Sanders, Jordon Thomas, Landon Jackson, Shemar Turner,
Hybrid (the Ash version of Ossai) - Clayton Smith
LB - Derrick Harris, Terrence Cooks, Jaydon Williams, ILB Morice Blackwell
(Juan Davis could also be an edge rusher)

Here is Inside Texas on Deuce Harmon who we got in on pretty late --
Deuce Harmon, DB - Denton Guyer (2021): It took long enough but the Texas staff extended an offer to the four-star defensive back one of the best pound for pound athletes in the state. After an impressive showing at the SMU/Texas satellite camp in Dallas last June where he recorded a laser timed 4.4 40, former cornerback coach Jason Washington became a big fan. Still, an offer didn’t happen for Harmon and the staff overhaul didn’t help much either as the new coaches surveyed the landscape. First viewed as a nickel, the UT staff now sees him as a cornerback. Harmon was always fond of the Horns, but the lack of attention pushed him in a different direction, like A&M. The Aggies are the current leader for the Guyer stud. It'll be an uphill battle for the staff. We’ll get a good idea of Jay Valai’s recovery speed.
