2021 Recruiting - Football

Does it seem odd the difference in style for recruiting that Herman enlists to vs previous 2. Mack locked down the state. Charlie tried. Herman gets good people but losing out on top quality in state prospects seems troublesome. We are more stable as a team than Macks last 2 years and way better than the barn fire Charlie ran. No reason TEXAS has to shop other states when there is more than enough talent inside our borders. As stated, Herman has gotten high ranked classes but we dont currently have an *** kicker team. Hoping that changes. Bottom line, you have to own a state like Texas and so far he doesnt.

Well it would be nice if the top recruits from Texas would sign with us. We get some every now and then but I know that Herman tries but faces negative recruiting. We need a superb season or two to quell negative recruiting then we can "own" Texas.

The University of Texas has faced "negative recruiting" for longer than I've been alive.

Ed Price is a drunk

Darrell Royal is a racist

Fred Akers will be fired next year

Mack Brown will make you soft and everyone in NFL knows it. Besides how many conference championships has he won? Can't win a National without a Conference.

Every year, Herman pisses off a few more Texas HS coaches with his arrogance and out of state recruiting. There is an old rule in business, spend 65% of you marketing time on your clientele, and 35% chasing the unknown. The University of Texas is the golden ring and owns the state until we screw it up.

1963 - were there any out of state players?

1969 - Two from Colorado and one from Wisconsin

2005 - there were two out of state legacies and maybe a couple of more

The problems are:
  • ou and aggy owning North and East Texas (ou actually strengthing its stranglehold). This is a direct result of the final Brown and the Strong years. The problem is currently the best overall HS football is being played in these areas.
  • Somehow recruiters are able to convince 18-year-old males that Norman, OK, collie station, TX, Columbus, Ohio, Clemson, SC, Tuscaloosa, AL, Athens, GA, Provo, UT and Palo Alto, CA are schools and better places to go to school than Texas and Austin.
  • Herman is caught between two forces - mending fences with the Texas HS coaches and fielding teams that can compete with the best. The negative recruiting hammers on his attitude; the fact that he has trouble keeping players out of the training room due to the way his teams practice; and the fact that he really has not changed from his Cougar High years (can win most games against top-flight schools, but loses against the TCU's, Baylor's and Iowa States of the college football universe). The result of this means his teams will never get into the CFP.
  • Most Texas HS coaches do not know (or care) who Ed Price, DKR or Fred Ackers were. They do know who Barry Switzer and Bob Stoops are (and conveniently forget who Howard Schnellenberger and John Blake were).
Without help from the Texas HS coaches all Herman can do is recruit natrionally if he wants to be competitive. That and winning something consistently.

We offered 2021 WDE Kelvin Gilliam from Virg
TFB says he intends on getting to Austin once the shutdown is over. He had been communicating with Coach Giles for a while.

He recently decommitted from Florida and is is at IMG where he is friends with Adeleye. The current CBs suggest he will flip to tOSU

Offer to Bryce Steele, 3 Star S out of Virginia.
Says Texas is his "dream school" but is expected to announce 4/16. UNC has all 9 CB. Has a nice frame and seems to be a very smart player. This could be interesting.
Texas offers 3-star Virginia safety Bryce Steele

Jason Suchomel of OB did an interview with Bryce Steele. Coach Hutzler has been recruiting him for a couple years. We are recruiting him as a LB. He was unable to play as a junior due to an undisclosed medical issue. He said that was "in the past" and "not something like a torn up knee that's going to slow him down long term." We appear to be in good shape assuming we can figure out a way to get him on campus. He likes Texas and Coach Hutz.

ou moderator Brandon Drumm likes RB Jonathan Brooks and calls it a great evaluation by the Texas staff. He thinks he will end up a 4-star

I gotta tell you all, this kid has everything you want in a Big 12 running back. His length and ability to catch allows him to play a variety of positions, even if he doesn’t pan out at RB. He also doesn’t lose speed when making cuts. To me that is one of the most crucial things you can possess as a RB, along with vision( he has that).

All in all, I came away very impressed by the Texas staff early evaluation of Brooks when not many have offered just yet. He reminds me a bit of Jamal Charles and Joe Mixon with how he catches out of the backfield and the way he runs a bit. Everything is so smooth and decisive.
Great evaluation by Texas staff and CB

aggy Perroni on TE Landon King--

King has three Crystal Ball predictions for Texas and the Longhorns are in good shape. But he has picked up some pretty big offers since those picks were made, so he's a little more open now.

I think its obvious at this point that Herman just does not have the charisma that someone like Mack had. It appears the the new OC does have some street cred and I am hoping that the new DC will as well. UT should have to turn kids away instead of trying to convince them this is the right choice. tOSU doesnt seem to have missed a beat when Urban left. They are even still getting cherry picks in Texas. Now for a kid from Texas to go to the frozen upper midwest, thats not an easy feet. Given they have won better than we have and hope Herman can change that but he has to be better with the Texas high school coaches.

It is a brave new world. Something called the internet, I think. Yeah, Herman has no charisma, just two #3 classes and a #8. What a loser.

Moving on ......

J'Dan Burnett of Nolan Catholic must be on somebody's radar.

Only rated a 3 Star DE/LB he is 6' and 200 lb. and runs a 10.84 in the 100, 4.49 in the 40. That is fast for a non-skill position player. Surely if he is a really bad tackler he can be coached? Gary Johnson was a similar build with that speed.

Kansas and Navy are top offers, so far.

From the IT Scoop -- JOJO EARLE
He's back. The 5-foot-9, 174-pound mighty mite from perennial power Aledo is a relatively quiet kid that doesn't get caught up in recruiting like many other prospects. He's a grounded, priority-based young man who lets his play on the field do the talking. With 3,500 total yards and 45 touchdowns in two seasons, those numbers are loud.
During UT's offseason overhaul on the coaching staff, his name got lost in the mix. It was time for UT and wide receivers coach Andre Coleman to make up for lost time. That happened. "I can't even remember the last time I visited Texas," said Earle, with a laugh.
Only 12 months ago, Texas was the team to beat for the four-star dynamo's services. Then the rest of the country caught up to what the Texas staff already knew; he's a playmaker. It appeared LSU and TCU held the latest advantage, and after Earle missed his unofficial visit to Austin in January, the distance between him and UT looked quite large.
Enter Coach Coleman, who sources say is going full throttle in the Earle pursuit. But also coach Jay Valai, who has a great relationship with Earle and his safety teammate BJ Allen (more on him below).
"I really enjoyed my time," Earle said. "I heard some good things that opened my eyes about the university."
In the Herman-Yurcich offensive collaboration, the inside receivers are put in a position to not only succeed but to put up gigantic numbers similar to Lil'Jordan Humphrey in 2018 and Devin Duvernay in 2019. Earle, who was accompanied by his parents and uncle, sees himself as a natural fit in what Texas wants to do in 2020.

Earle wants to visit Baton Rouge this spring, and is unsure if there's any other trips he'll be making until the summer.

Texas had one goal in regards to Earle on Sunday; get back in this. And I believe they did just that.

These reports by 247 and IT ^^^ that we were back in it with JoJo Earle were incorrect.
We did not make his final cut down

We offered 4-star 2021 ATH Julien Simon out of Tacoma, Wash

top 8 -- seems like a WR, for now (Coleman recruiting)

On whether Billy Bowman is a DB or WR?

" ... “It’s still too early to know what position will become his full-time spot once he’s at campus, but coach (Tom) Herman has been open with us about understanding what Billy wants to do on the football field,” Bowman’s father said. “I’d say he ends up at safety because he’s a two-time all-state player at that position, but he’s too good with the ball in his hands not to get some touches each game.”

Recruiting athletes with versatility is a staple of Herman’s recruiting strategy. He wants players who can contribute at multiple positions like D’Shawn Jamison, Roschon Johnson and De’Marvion Overshown. Texas currently holds commitments from the top two-ranked athletes in the country with Bowman and Denton Ryan teammate Ja’Tavion Sanders, the No. 1-ranked athlete in the cycle.

The Bowmans went into recruiting with an advantage. Not only does Billy Bowman Sr. coach, he was a former athlete himself. Playing at Ryan also helps because Bowman has been able to watch former teammates like Spencer Sanders, who’s now the quarterback at Oklahoma State, go through the recruiting process...."

On the "20 fastest prospects in Texas."

Billy Bowman, ATH, Denton Ryan
How fast is he? - 10.84 in the 100
Gabe says: You will have a tough time finding a player in Texas who plays with more functional athleticism on the field than Texas pledge Billy Bowman, a three-phase difference-maker for perennial Class 5A Division I state title contender Denton Ryan. Bowman plays very fast, and he supports that perception with a 10.84 100-meter time, which he recorded as a sophomore in Spring 2019.
Bowman is a big play waiting to happen at receiver, defensive back or in the return game. As a junior, he caught 54 passes for 824 yards and 17 touchdowns, while recording 55 tackles and three interceptions, all of which he returned for TD's. Bowman played a major role helping Ryan to a 15-1 record and a 5A D-I state runner-up finish.
Mike says: Bowman was one of the most important early commits in the class. A versatile weapon on both sides of the ball, Bowman could be a power-five slot receiver, but he might be the best safety in the state. He’s also the most dynamic punt returner out there. Bowman has said on many occasions that he’s completely locked in with his recruitment, and he’s been a vocal leader in the Texas class.

Theodore Knox, WR, The Woodlands
How fast is he? - 10.40 seconds in the 100 meters, 21.03 in the 200 meters, 4.42 in the 40
Gabe says: Theodore Knox did not get a chance to throw any new track times on his resume this season, which would have been his first track and field campaign in Texas after moving last offseason from Baton Rouge to The Woodlands in the Houston area. As a sophomore in 2019, he recorded those blistering times of 10.40 seconds in the 100 and 21.03 in the 200 to win district championships in both events.
Knox ran a 10.72 and a 21.69 in the 100 and 200, respectively, to win silver medals in both events at the 2019 Louisiana 1A-2A track and field championships. Additionally, he recorded a verified 4.42-second 40-yard dash in March 2019 at The Opening New Orleans regional camp. The 5-foot-10, 167-pound Knox owns almost 20 offers, including schools such as Alabama, Baylor, Mississippi State and Texas, among about a dozen others. Knox plans to make a decision by some point in June.
Mike says: Perhaps the fastest skill player in the state, Knox has serious burners at the wide receiver position. Texas identified Knox early after he made his move from Louisiana to Texas, and the staff has been recruiting him hard ever since. Knox lists Texas, Mississippi State, Georgia and Baylor as the four schools standing out for him, but sources tell me that Texas and Mississippi State are the lead dogs at this time.

People, its all about WINNING and a fast track to the NFL for these kids these days. There are those who are influenced by bagmen as well. All Texas has to do is start WINNING on the field, and things will pan out. Kids these days want to play for a winner, not merely being part of developing a winner.
