2021 Recruiting - Football

I'd rather us generally oversign OL, DL (including DEs), and QBs. If we have to undersign a position or two to 'make up' for oversigning in the trenches + QB, I'd say sign fewer WRs and TEs.

There's also the cold-hearted cynic somewhere inside most fans and coaches that says many will portal out if they don't see much playing time, so don't worry so much about oversigning. Oversign in the trenches, darn it!
We are trying to sign more offensive linemen but they don't seem to want to come. I think we will end up with a few more.

Exactly. For some reason mensa thinks we need 20+ wr/te. I say sign a couple that are good and let them play and then you dont need so many to sit on the bench. I am sure they would rather play. RB I agree with rotating to keep them healthy since RB is a short playing life due to contact. We actually seem to be in descent shape on the DL for now but thats the first year in a long while for that.

Well, if we're lucky we can beat out Holy Cross, Angelo State, and maybe even McNeese State for a few more OLs.
Why is that chop?
Why are the 5 stars and 4 stars going elsewhere leaving us with 3 stars? (I'm not going to say that some of the three stars do eventually become four star talent because that's just a waste of time)
Obviously, the word is out (negative recruiting) that o-linemen just can't develope at UT, Or other positions for that matter. So what is the best way to change that perception?
So we are in a catch-22 we need to get good players so that they become drafted high but in order to get good players you have to be able to recruit them but we have a problem recruiting them because we don't get players drafted high. And so the perception carries on. Only a coach with a top notch reputation can break break this perception. Too bad we can't call a timeout to get the opposition to stop negative recruiting us while we find the right coach.

Well, if Cosmi goes in the 1st round (a pretty good probability), then we can tout that.

Hand put together some good lines at other places, but he wasn't all he was cracked up to be. That being said, our OL play under Hand has improved from the worst in the Big 12 and a utter disgrace to the Burnt Orange, to a bit above average. But...... we could do a lot better.

Except we are getting everyone else's rejects...
Not necessarily

Meyer actually commented on the portal this weekend. He drew an analogy to NFL free agency. The primary topic was tOSU picking up Trey Serman as a tranfer.

"So let's talk about the free agency of college football — that's what happened," Meyer said. "Marcus Crowley, a backup tailback, good player, got hurt. I believe it's an ACL. Master Teague, I believe, had an Achilles injury. So what did they do? They went to the free agency, which in college football is called the transfer portal. They went and found a guy that's — they went through spring practice, I remember that whole conversation, 'We need to go to,' that's the verbiage you used now in college football. 'We need a back,' go to the transfer portal. Think about that."

Getting CBs for 2021 WR/S Dorian Singer (6'0,172) -- I think we are looking at him as a safety but you can see some WR in the film. (2020 S Xavion Alford may be headed to the portal)
In a battle with Air Force, Eastern Michigan, Howard, Illinois State, Montana State and North Dakota

Could mean we're out of the running for Keithron Lee.
Lee has blown up and he looks sec bound.

Here is a write up on the full 20201 class to date by "Cody Daniel, Wescott Eberts, Daniel Seahorn, and Gerald Goodridge"

Following three straight classes that ranked among the top 10 nationally, Tom Herman’s 2021 class currently sits at No. 17 nationally and No. 2 in the Big 12 after inking all but one pledge during the early signing period.

The Burnt Orange Nation staff got together to discuss where Texas may have struck gold this cycle, the misses that ultimately led to an underwhelming ranking, where Texas can go from here, and more.

From a position group standpoint, which group is the strength of this class?

Wescott — With a relatively small group right now, the process of elimination makes this pretty simple and it’s the linebackers. Morice Blackwell is one of my favorite players in the class because, as I wrote when he committed, I think he’s the perfect spread linebacker for the modern Big 12. Tom Herman said on Wednesday that he thinks Blackwell can play anywhere on defense besides the line. Terrence Cooks fits that bill as well with his range and athleticism. Then there’s the Derrick Harris Jr. on the edge, a player who has some natural pass-rushing ability and can also drop into coverage — if jumbo athlete Ja’Tavion Sanders doesn’t end up at Jack, Harris could be the answer there.

Cody — Linebacker is the clear strength of the class. As Wescott noted, guys like Blackwell and Cooks are pretty ideal prospects for the style needed in the Big 12. Once his frame fills out, Harris looks the part of a potentially special Jack LB, which is where I think we’ll end up seeing Sanders, as well.

Gerald — This depends on the future of Ishmael Ibraheem, as he continues to deal with legal issues. He was the lone player not to sign, but if he is able to sign with Texas in February, paired with JD Coffey and Jamier Johnson could be a dynamite trio in the secondary for Texas. If Ibraheem is unable to join the class, then the obvious group is the linebacker group, especially with the need for depth at that position. Harris, Blackwell and Cooks are all high-upside athletes that give Coleman Hutzler a lot of talent to work with.

Seahorn — The linebacker group is definitely the strength of this class and you have to tip your cap to Coleman Hutzler for the job he did this cycle. Hutzler’s ability to build relationships paid dividends when it came to landing Terrence Cooks and on top of that he landed a certified stud in Morice Blackwell, who was incredibly under-ranked when he committed to the Longhorns early in the cycle. Rounding out the trio is New Caney’s Derrick Harris, who was another early cycle victory for Hutzler. Harris missed most of senior year due to injury, but he put out some promising tape pre-injury and I am very interested to see where the staff plugs him in once he hits campus.
BON Roundtable: Texas aims to make the most of underwhelming 2021 class

I would actually feel better about the Singer offer is it was Yurcich who wanted him. He goes up to high point he ball well. Hard to tell about the speed
If its S, I would rathe just hold Alford
Herman called him directly, so there's that
But since cannot sign until Feb 2021, if there is a new coach he would have to be on board too

More CBs coming in
He is from Minnesota but moved to Phoenix to play his senior year due to the virus from China. His best offers until his senior tape came out were Utah and Iowa State. But now he is hearing from more teams.

...

He claims a 4.6 as his best

At ~ 1:07 here, can see good hands and body control
Also, lots of good leaps all over for a 6'0 guy

Some Burton on our weak recruiting this year

" .... Yet there has been ample dysfunction and mostly disappointing results in recruiting this year.

On the way to getting a player’s signature, the Texas assistants have too often been out-recruited or out-maneuvered for most of the state’s elite targets. Some may say it’s a lack of winning on the field, but too many of these recruiting battles were lost before the football season even began.

Frankly, some of the assistants are poor recruiters. Offensive line coach Herb Hand simply doesn’t connect with recruits well enough. In a year where OL recruits in-state were plentiful, the Horns hit below the Mendoza line.

Likewise, Jay Boulware has done very little on the recruiting trail this cycle, his first in his return to Austin. The tight end staff position is typically manned by a strong, haymaker recruiter. That’s clearly not Boulware, who also was a minus recruiter while at OU. Even receivers coach Andre Coleman seems to be a little wishy-washy with the receivers he is pursuing (see the loss of JJ Henry to Ole Miss) and that impacted his recruiting haul.

There are other macro factors to consider besides winning and individual recruiters. Some of that has to do with the timing of scholarship offers.

Herman mandates that any in-state offer be a committable one. It’s an understandable decision from a coach not wanting to make enemies with high school coaches. However, it has caused unnecessary delay and irreparable harm in multiple recruitments.

Texas, and whoever is leading the program next, must streamline its approach to in-state offers. There needs to be greater urgency or Texas will continue to come up short.

And finally, it’s not the personnel department’s problem if they recommend and present a player to be offered to the coaching staff and an assistant coach won’t sign off on the offer or the head coach won’t overrule them.

There are a lot of problems with Texas recruiting right now. Not just a single one. Winning would help. Better recruiters would help. A more streamlined and urgent process would help. Every single one of the factors above are the responsibility of the head coach to address and overcome...."

"What are the ripples of the roster logjam? One Group of Five head coach pointed out two potential reverberations. He said that the real roster issues are going to come in 2022, as the exemption to be over 85 scholarship players is expected to be gone, but a majority of the roster still has an extra year. That’s going to potentially limit the amount of high school players in the class of 2022. “What 2022 looks like is crazy,” the Group of Five head coach said. “Now that you have to get under the 85 threshold, it’s a scramble. What can you bring in in 2022? That’s a problem. “If your son is in high school and he has a 2022 scholarship offer, he should commit right now.”
