2021-2022 Season

Would like to see the UT Women play a game or two in Gregory like the men's team.

Unpopular opinion: if we can't fill Erwin (or Moody), maybe that's what we should do. But that probably alienates our actual fans now in the hope of grabbing theoretical ones.

Also, I think Vic ought to take a page out of Chris Beard's book. He has actively sought out specific members of the student body, made social media focuses about those students, and brought them out (seems like royal treatment). I get being frustrated by an empty FEC, but Vic has to be a part of that solution too.

Have you been to a women's basketball in Gregory Gym? I went to one. I thought it was going to be fun. NOT. I did not enjoy it at all. Looking forward to going to a game at Moody.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, but no way in hell is Texas paying its WBB coach $3.6 million annually. Dawn Staley makes $2.9 million; Mulkey and Geno slightly less; they all have won national championships.
UT can afford it, we are way higher revenue university then SC, LSU, and UCONN..why wouldn’t we be the first? Aren’t we trying to be the best? Vic is the man for the job and he plays the kind of style Texas wants to be known for. No one else better for the job, Conradt wanted him over anyone else. I could certainly see CDC doing it.

You might see Texas doing it (one day), but Texas has NEVER actually done it. A&M went and money-whipped Jimbo Fisher from Florida State to become their football head coach at the tune of $7.5 million a year (like 2nd/3rd highest salary in the country); his salary was increased to over $9 million a season. Texas goes and hires an offensive coordinator from Alabama at the tune of $5.4 million a season (like 15th highest salary in the country).

Yes, CDC told stated that Jody Conradt told him to go get Vic Schaefer. Does that mean she wanted him over any other coach in the country (Dawn, Geno, Kim)? Not to me. To me, she told him to go get the best coach that she believed would actually accept the job at Texas (based on him being a native Texan).

Going back to lack of fan attendance, one of the common themes mentioned is the difficulty (lead time) in getting to the games; and, I agree; it's not easy (or as easy as it used to be).

That being said, that's not an excuse for Saturday or Sunday games, especially games during the day.

Also, while the men's hoops fan base is much larger than that of the women, the same traffic/parking obstacles are present. Yet, the men's fans can somehow manage to make it to the Erwin Center for a Monday night game against Kansas. My point being, where there's a will, there's a way.

In January 2018, we had a great turnout (11,877) for our home (weeknight) game against UConn. So, the fans have proven they will come watch the elite programs; the problem is we haven't had elite programs come to town very often. We were actually supposed to play a home-and-home series against UConn beginning in 2020-21 @ UConn; but, at Texas' request, the series was delayed a year until 2021-22. Then, again, at Texas' request, the series was delayed another year until 2022-23. So, those delays were Vic's choices. We'd have hosted UConn this season if not for Vic's decisions; having UConn on the home schedule might have increased season ticket sales. That game might have "introduced" new fans to his new Texas program, and could have been a springboard for future fan growth.

Fair - but it was a good night for the Men. And it's a kickass volleyball venue.

I just think Vic needs to be more involved with the solution here. People can ***** all day long. Where's the solutions?

Totally get your point but one of the main differences is Beard gets to run his ideals straight to CDC and they are both progressive (not in the political sense), outside the box thinkers. Vic has to run everything thru multiple people (who need to retire by the way) before it gets to CDC. Also, whoever runs the social media (ie...promotion) aspect of wbb needs to find another gig as well. They have a hard time even getting the website/roster correct. Just my 2 worthless cents for the day.

So, back in my days at UT, you had to have purchased a UT sports package in order to draw for tickets to women's basketball games (at no additional charge). If that's still the case, perhaps a step in the right direction to increase wbb fan attendance would be:

- free admission for all UT students (with a current student ID); maybe even allow for a plus-one (non-UT student)

- free admission for all high school, junior high, elementary school students; perhaps that will encourage the parents to bring their kids to an event that is free (could appeal to families with several children)

Does he? I thought Vic reported directly to Del Conte. Who does he report to? Plonsky?

I only pointed that out because the salary you posted for Dawn, Mulkey and Vic included the sponsorships, media money - Geno’s was just base salary.
Pretty sure the numbers I used were base salary. Do you see something different online?

As Vic has discovered, when a coach from Texas says or does something even mildly controversial it makes news. Mulkey was never considered for the job nor do I think she would have considered it.

Vic was chosen because of his record and his ties to Texas. It wasn’t a stretch to think he would leave Starksville. All things considered, he was as close to the perfect candidate as you could get. And Texas made a huge statement about their plans for the future of WBB when they jumped up to that salary level.

Vic has a family to consider. He’s 60 years old. Texas is a premiere university. Austin is a world-class city. I think he stays, but the only one who can answer that is Vic.

If I’m a Vegas oddsmaker on Schaefer leaving for the Brazos, I’m thinking 60/40 he stays. Is it a real possibility he leaves…..40% is a real number. I’ll with extreme interest watch every little tidbit of news on recruiting, attendance, administration support or lack thereof, team success, team happiness, etc. ….all the while with one eye to what’s going on in C.Station. CDC knew this day would come soon when Blair retired. He got lots of assurances. Things change. Schaefer has 2 years of knowledge about Texas and Aggy up close. Again….in my fair and biased opinion….he stays. But not a slam dunk.

As a friend and I spoke about yesterday... CDC knew this situation at A&M. Surely he did something to "protect" his decision to hire Vic, especially considering hiring a male coach was not very popular with a lot of people.

If you're talking about the game last fall. It was an exhibition. No band, very few fans for an exhibition. It wasn't promoted the way the men's "students only" game was promoted. That game at Gregory looked amazing on TV.

Whoever runs the social media has a very different definition of promotion than the majority of us. It's all about self-promotion not ticket sale promotion in our social media group. They want cute little videos that go viral and generate interactions. What they are tracking and what they are proudest about is how many social media interactions they are getting on Facebook, Insta and Twitter. I don't give a crap about being #1 in Social Media interactions (and yes I realize that stat helps sell people on coming here for their NIL deals). I want to be #1 in attendance and I would take being dead last in social media interactions for that to happen.

It's amazing to me how many followers the Texas Longhorns and various sports accounts have on the 3 major media platforms. Yet they do little promotion for attendance in the posts they make. Right now all 3 accounts should be promoting the fact that the very LAST UT SPORTING EVENT EVER AT FEC will be held on March 5 when we play OSU. They do next to nothing to directly promote attendance at any event.

Thinking back almost two years ago right before Vic was hired by Del Conte. I would think he'd have consulted with his friend/mentor, Gary Blair. Perhaps he did, and asked about how much longer Blair would be coaching, and if Schaefer had a chance at being his successor at A&M. If Blair had told him just 2 more seasons before he retired, that's not a long wait (assuming Schaefer was the likely replacement). I don't think Blair actually knew his own timeline; perhaps he felt he still could go 5 more years.

Perhaps he asked him how he'd feel about Schaefer accepting the Texas job offer as they'd be going head-to-head for more in-state recruits.

After Vic's first season at Texas was over, both programs went through a lot of coaching staff changes. Johnnie Harris accepts the head coaching job at Auburn; while she doesn't take any of Texas' existing assistant coaches with her, she does hire A&M's Bob Starkey who had been there 9 seasons; that did not strike me as a move up (although his title at Auburn is "Associate Head Coach", a title he did not hold at A&M). Also, assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, Amy Wright who had been there 9 seasons accepts a job with OU's new head coach; again, I didn't consider that step up (although her title at OU is "Associate Head Coach", a title she did not hold at A&M).

Kelly Bond-White has been at A&M for 19 seasons, and has been the Associate Head Coach the last 14 seasons. She's the only assistant who remained with A&M after last season. So, A&M has to hire 2 new assistant coaches. I just noticed that one of the new hires they made last offseason, Vernette Skeete, holds the title of 'Co-Associate Head Coach'; and, that is also the new title of Kelly Bond-White. Can't say I've seen those titles often, if at all.

What's my point? The changes at A&M since last offseason until Gary Blair's retirement announcement in October (before the season started) could all point to Kelly Bond-White being Blair's successor.

The incompetence just doesn't make any sense. Does anyone have the email address of CDC and Hartzell?

Retire or let go? If any person involved with promotion or anything having to do with that area are on the payroll they need to be asked nicely to find something else to do/be fired.

So in conclusion :smile1:

I hope Vic stays. I love his style of play. I love the type of player he recruits. And I would love to see him get his first (of many) championship as a head coach here at Texas

Had no idea this will be the final sporting event at the FEC (other than the First & 2nd Round of the NCAA’s?)

Just too easy of a promotion BE A PART OF HISTORY AND CHEER ON A TOP RANKED TEXAS TEAM. It’s pathetic this hasn’t happened

Just saw that the SEC voted to have its future women's basketball tournaments in Greenville, SC for 2022-23, 2023-24, and 2024-25. So, if we do start competing in the SEC in 2023-24, it will be a pretty long trip.

This coming March, it's being held in Nashville.

Guess this is just something we're gonna have to get used to; the chances of it ever being held in Texas will be very slim this decade. But, I wasn't a fan of the Big 12 insisting it be held in conjunction with the men's tourney in KC every year either; at least in the SEC they are on different weeks/weekends.

While there is no perfect location for all 16 fan bases, having it one city for 3 consecutive years really provides unfair advantages for one or two schools. I don't see a reason why they don't alternate it on an annual basis between Nashville, Atlanta, Dallas, New Orleans, Tampa, Memphis, etc. Having it one city too often won't help build the sport, IMO.

There is plenty of blame to go around for the lack of attendance. And here’s why

Vic Schaffer
If you look at what other coaches have done, they immediately sought out the students…threw pizza parties, held talk shows, attended other sporting events etc. Vic seems to have thought, fans would just show up because it’s a good product when in actuality you’ve gotta beat the pavement and go preach the gospel of Texas WBB. Winning simply isn't enough. I hate that it has to be that way, but it is!

Tx Administration
The marketing and involvement has not been there for WBB as it is for other programs. I can't hardly open my phone without seeing a plug to get to a MBB or Baseball game. It was even better for Vball than what we're seeing for WBB. Also the other coaches have done a piss poor job of supporting the program and encouraging their fans to do the same. Never seen Sark at a game, haven't seen CDC or President Hartzell at a game when he's courtside for every single MBB game. Haven't seen Beard or any of the UT MBB assistants at the game. Hardly even see other Women's teams at the games unless they're being featured at halftime. That starts at the top because most of the time people are followers and they do what their leaders do!

Take LSU for example, aside from Mulkey hitting the ground running and supercharging her recruitment of the LSU fans, all of the other programs met that moment. She had the MBB, Baseball and Football coaches literally meeting her as she stepped out of the limo arriving on the LSU campus. I think Ed O was actually the one who gave her the tour. The freaking Gov of Louisiana was at her press conference and has attended at least 5 different games that I could find. Of course fans are going to turn out for that!

The Texas Fans
I think the podcast had it exactly right, people love to tout the burnt orange as talk about Texas being the best Uni in the country.....well its high time we prove it!

In the TCU at Texas thread both Rori and Shay commented in the pre-game press conference that was posted how much more fun and exciting it is to play on the road in front a big crowd particularly a boisterous student section. They both specifically talked about the Student Sections and pretty much said they prefer playing on the road in front of a crowd (making sure to appreciate the dedicated fans they have here).
I know myself and many others have speculated that this is one reason the team seems to perform better on the road. I know from my own experiences that I played better in front of a loud crowd whether they were hostile or not.

Why can’t there be a way to attract a bigger student section consistently? For instance, my car dealership no longer provides the cumbersome and time consuming shuttle services and now summons an Uber or Lyft while you’re having your car serviced after drop off and to pick up.
A big donor could fund a program similar with times and distance parameters with destination to and from the FEC (and Moody in the future) with a code or something to make it easier and safer to attend for starters.
Throw in free pizza and sodas inside the arena with a DJ pre-game
