2020 Recruiting - Football

That should be 85 scholarship limit for Texas now.

The only way we get the kid from Pflugerville Connley is if he is willing to walk on.

Tarik Black has one year of eligibility remaining and is immediately eligible

Hopefully there is a season for him to play

Texas Football: Tarik Black is a Perfect Scheme Fit for Texas

"With the graduation of starters Devin Duvernay and Collin Johnson (and to a lesser extent John Burt), Texas was probably always going to hit up the transfer portal to bring in experience for the wide receiver room.

The Longhorns needed leadership amongst their pass catchers to help develop a young receiving corps that includes Brennan Eagles, Marcus Washington, Al'Vonte Woodard, Kennedy Lewis, Troy Omeire and Kelvontay Dixon.

But Black is not just an older face in the lineup or another body for the depth chart, the former U.S. Army All American possesses the potential to be the next great Texas receiver in the Longhorns power spread offense. ..."

I do not think Texas abandons the Connelly DB. Better check that count again.

Has there been any transfers I don't know about? We were at 84 back on signing day after we had a couple of guys transfer. Generally after spring ball 1 or 2 guys will see the writing on the wall and transfer, but with no spring ball we didn't have that.

I've apparently have missed info on Barron.

Would one of you more knowledgeable please provide me with more details regarding position, size, high school etc

TFB says the potential addition to the 2020 class is CB Jahdae Barron (Pflugerville Connally). Prev committed to Baylor but now released from his LOI. He is a 4-star by both 247 and the Comp (#24 CB nationally). TFB thinks it will happen if we formally offer

to announce today at 1pm

On new 2020 commit 4-star DB Jahdae Barron

From 247 --
"the clearest link between Barron and Texas aside from the program’s interest prior to signing day is Texas cornerbacks coach Jay Valai, who recruited Barron during his time with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.“

From Gabe Brooks--

" ... height and frame potential relative to the position. Plays smoothly and instinctive in coverage. Shows good ball skills for a DB. Flashes encouraging reactive quickness. Consistently stays in-phase with receivers while playing off coverage. ... No verified testing times, but owns a 10.95 100-meter time. Good long speed. Natural corner but could potentially provide position flexibility in college. Willing tackler with solid numbers in that department, but can improve technique and consistency. Needs to continue adding bulk and strength to combat bigger opponents in college. One of the top 2020 corners in Texas who could become multi-year starter with NFL Draft potential.”
From BON -
“Since the Horns don’t need immediate help at the position for this season, the calculation for the Texas coaching staff is whether Barron is a better prospect than what the staff believes they can sign in the 2021 class and whether a year of redshirting Barron or playing him on special teams is worth a roster spot this season.”

IT saying he may be more of a S than a DB if he can improve his tackling and ball skills. Sub 11 in 100M and likes to go downhill and strike opponents. So mostly potential for now and almost a certain redshirt unless he breaks into special teams. More importantly, he wants to be at Texas.

Some more write-up on Jahdae Barron

Ball Hawk – Barron isn’t just a corner who’s going to sit back and wait for the ball to come to him, he’s going to go get it every time. If it’s a run play, he is anticipating it and can jump into the backfield for a tackle for a loss. On screen plays, Barron is already around the blocker to make another tackle in the backfield. His game isn’t all about getting interceptions, although he can do that well too. Barron’s play is about attacking whoever has the ball, every time, at all costs.

Tackling – Barron is a great tackler at the high school level. Each and every game he’s making at least one play or one hit that makes your jaw hit the floor. To go with adding weight and strength, for Barron to reach his maximum potential at the next level he needs to really hone down his craft when it comes to tackling the ball carrier. If he cultivates this, watch out.

Summary - Texas gets an absolute steal with Barron jumping ship to Austin. The Austin native now gets to stay close to home and Texas gets bragging rights as they steal a stud away from Waco. Texas now, all of a sudden, has all the essential pieces to create a lethal secondary for years to come. The Longhorns also have the ability to put other 2020 commits such as Kelvontay Dixon and Dajon Harrison on the defensive side of the football if they choose to do so.

Final Verdict - The University of Texas landed a much-needed cornerback for the class of 2020. Before the announcement of Barron’s decision, Texas nationally held the ninth-ranked recruiting class for 2020. The addition of another four-star cornerback is only going to bolster that ranking. Guys like Barron, Crawford, Thompson, Alford, and others could finally give Texas an answer to the Sooner’s wideouts and other freak athletes in the Big-12. Texas still has two open scholarships for the class of 2020.

Like Braun before him, two years of eligibility to play one.

What is interesting there was one year he only played 3 games before injury. So a possibility of a medical redshirt year is on the table if he wants to pursue it.

I really like this review! Hopefully he is a last minute productive steal.

Anwar thinks Black will be competing with Eagles at X

From a Michigan guy --
You guys just got a good one in Tarik Black. Has had injury issues (broke both feet in different injuries back to back summers) but is a total stud. Will be rooting for him wearing the burnt orange this year. Having an actual QB to throw him the ball instead of Shea Patterson is going to do wonders for him.

And from Mike Roach --
We’ve been talking about the possibility of this news for a bit. Black always let Texas know that they were his number one option, and he would be in Austin if everything went according to plan. One big factor was a rule change recently made in college football. Before this year, a hopeful graduate transfer would need to be admitted to a graduate program not offered at his current institution. A recent change allowed graduate transfers to pursue more undergraduate studies, and that rule change was a big domino in Black’s process.
