2019 Recruiting - Football

While we’re waiting to see the win column start improving, I think we can safely say that Herman and his staff are getting solid work done on the recruiting trail. This is very encouraging.

Yeah, someone gets a yellow flag for cross posting on the wrong thread.

He's a 2020

Tyler Johnson last 5-star OT since .... ?

Mason Walters (2013) was a 5-star OT coming out of HS but played RG almost his entire career
https://247sports.com/Player/Mason-Walters-4661

Darius James (2015) was listed as an OT but I am pretty sure he actually played C in high school.
For us, he only played in 6g total with 2 starts at OT
https://247sports.com/Player/Darius-James-7329

Kent Perkins and Kennedy Estelle were both OTs but high 4-stars, not 5-stars

Tony Hills was a 5-star TE who we moved to OT after a bad knee injury. He enrolled as a 2004 even though he came out in 2003. He was the last player we have had drafted as an OT (4th round, 2008). Hills played 6 years but only had 1 start in his career.

Jonathon Scott (2001 class) was also drafted as an OT from Texas (in 2006) but was a high 4-star out of HS.

Before them, Leonard Davis was a 3-star and Mike Williams was a DT coming out.

We need to get this offensive tackle thing figured out.

I think Connor Williams was a good start in that direction. If coach Hand is as good as advertised, I think we are going to see some excellent offensive linemen in the coming years. I'm encouraged by what I have seen so far.

I'd like to get one or both of those guys from Bama. It would end our worry about oline depth. But it also might cut into the number of scholarships we can offer this year. That also might not be a bad thing as we would have a bigger 2020 class and that class is going to be huge for the future of the program, I would call it the make or break class for Herman.

2019 will be his third class which should be the standard. Yes the 2017 was started by Strong, but the same people who will judge the 2019 class also judged the 2017 class. (If Sam is what some think he is, remember that he came out of the 2017 class so that in itself validates that class.) If Texas doesn't win 8 Regular Season games in 2018 there are going to be issues no matter how good the 2020 class is judged.

CB in for WR Peyton Powell (6'2,182) of Odessa Permian to Texas
https://247sports.com/Player/Peyton-Powell-46055198
Probably a Z-WR for us

Here is IT on him --

Powell is switching from Midland Christian to Odessa Permain. Somebody at Midland Christian knows how to identify receivers as they also once had McClane Mannix who predictably tore his freshman year up at Nevada. Like Mannix before him, Powell elected to transfer to a bigger school to showcase his wares for college recruiters. Also like Mannix, Powell tests extremely well. He is Lo-Joe reincarnate, except he has a bit more twitch. If UT pushes, they will get him.

Some think Carter is the best CB in the state in the 2019 class. Nahlin says --

UT is back in touch with CB Jeffery Carter of Aledo after offering his cousin, DE Taurean Carter of Mansfield Legacy, last week. Jeff exchanged messages with Coach Washington recently and both of those guys want to play together in college
.

Another shoe that may drop soon is WR Jaylen Ellis (Round Rock Cedar Ridge). Has been committed to Baylor for about a year (his former Cedar Ridge coach is at Baylor)
He is 6'0,180 and had 56 catches for 1,248 yards and 14 TDs as a junior. His team went 13-2 in Class 6A Div I losing to eventual state champ Allen in the semifinals

Some more on Jaylen Ellis --

Ellis is not only an elite athlete with track tested measurables, he’s also an excellent student. I am told that the Texas offer has immediately made a huge impact on Ellis’ recruitment, and while he is still committed to Baylor, things could play out in a positive fashion for the Longhorns if they continue to put in the work here.

While the Texas offer really made an impact with Ellis, it also sounds like (aggy) is trying to throw a monkey wrench in the mix. I’m told there is a possibility (aggy) will also offer, which could create some serious competition as I’m told Ellis likes (aggy). It sounds like the SEC appeal has always been there for the family.

The other issue of course is that Baylor has been loyal to him for quite some time and believed in him early. I’ll be checking with my source later today or tomorrow to see if there has been any additional movement. – (Super K)

From Steve Wiltfong's Weekly Buzz

The Longhorns are up to No. 15 in the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings following a pair of Memorial Day Weekend commitments from Conroe (Texas) Oak Ridge five-star offensive tackle Tyler Johnson and Temple (Texas) High tight end Jared Wiley. The 6-foot-5, 308-pound Johnson is the No. 7 offensive tackle in the country and No. 5 recruit in the state. He’s quick, can ruin front of the screen game and shows the traits you want at the position. Folks around Austin applauded Johnson for his intangibles, similar to the quarterback Johnson. He checks the culture and high-IQ boxes. The 6-foot-6, 230-pound Wiley is interesting as an inline tight end that can sneak out and beat you vertically in the passing game. He’s going to develop into your 255-pound extra attachment to the offensive line, a willing and sometimes ferocious blocker on film that Herman can also use as a wrinkle for a big play. That’s at the very least. There’s lots to like with Wiley long-term.

Story on Johnson

" ...... Class of 2019 quarterback recruit Roschon Johnson is tailored to thrive under Herman. It’s not just his skillset. No doubt, Johnson is in the controls on Friday nights, where he passed for 35 touchdowns and ran for 29 more scores as a junior for Port Neches-Groves. But it’s his mental make-up that intrigues me.

Herman is a perfectionist. Johnson lives the same lifestyle. Ranked by the industry-generated 247Sports Composite as the nation’s No. 5 dual-threat passer, the 6-foot-1, 192-pound Johnson just wrapped up another semester with straight As. That’s the only mark to ever make his report card through three years in high school. “I try to be as close to perfect as I can,” Johnson told 247Sports. Johnson has passed for 5,236 yards and 61 touchdowns combined over the last two seasons with another 3,277 yards coming on the ground with 59 scores. He’s only thrown 11 interceptions over that span of 511 pass attempts. Damn near perfect. “There’s always stuff to work on,” Johnson said.

Johnson is a good decision-maker, will stand in the pocket and deliver downfield when pressure is coming and is very dynamic when he’s extending plays to make a throw or just taking off and running it himself. He is still polishing up as a passer, but by the time Herman is ready to call his number in Austin, I believe Johnson will give him the best opportunity to run his offense the way he truly wants it done. He committed to Texas nearly a year ago over the likes of Baylor, Florida, Florida State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State, TCU, Tennessee and Texas A&M. “What made Texas right for me is I would say the overall culture they’re trying to bring there, to the people they’re trying to get things going with and get things back on track,” Johnson said. “The system they run for me, I know Coach Herman has done a lot with dual-threat quarterbacks in previous history and I think i can make a difference in that offense and bring Texas back where it should be.”......"

I just can't say it enough...I know sometimes the promise isn't fulfilled...but I believe the years RJ is behind center will mark UTs return to glory.

For any doubters out there, someone try to find two videos from last season

1) PNG vs Port Arthur - kid took a beating, yet led two three score comebacks to beat Port Arthur. Great display of toughness, determination, and will to not lose.

2) Bi-district game at Stallworth in Baytown, a real shootout reminiscent of the Warren McVea/Linus Baer game. RJ not only controlled the offense calling his own plays, but managed the clock, not to mention playing DB on the last series and making the final stop of the game.

Again, Faircloth "recommends" three plays to Johnson, who has the authority to change the play at the line. For novices, you can do that with a QB who can READ a defense.

:deadhorse:

Buy or sell: RJ kicks a game-winning field goal for us at some point.

Oh, wrong thread. :smile1:
