2019 Recruiting - Football

On another note... So glad to see there isn't more freaking out over here at HF over Garrett Wilson. Dude had plenty of compelling reasons to choose tOSU, and I do not read too much into it...though it's unfortunate. Just hope some other connected guys make their own decisions and, without those other compelling personal reasons present, choose the good guys.
Went over on BON board and there was wailing and gnashing of teeth from some, though not all. I thought I had stumbled into Texags for a minute. Questioning Herman's recruiting abilities and it sounded like throwing in the towel lol.
Glad to see our HF bunch with heads screwed on properly.
...well mostly properly :yes:

The over-emoting there starts at the top

A quote from Garrett Wilson --

“They were close. I’m not going to lie, the official visit made me think about them a little more. In the end, I’ve watched a lot of people go to Texas with a ton of ability and maybe not achieve what I thought they could. I didn’t want to be one of those guys.”

Ouch......that is it. ^This^ ^This^ ^This^ is what I would have thought recently (last 6 years or so prior to 2017 season) as a recruit myself, though I do not think it will apply for 2018 moving forward.
He said what some others have thought previously, but I do think he is underestimating the coaching/culture change. As I said just the other day....it is "Show me" time for Texas.
What an indictment on recent coaching/staff/program and an honest answer from a recruit.
I do think this has already begun to change and will not be the case moving forward, but can't deny it has been true.
Edit: I wrote this with a few skill positions in mind, primarily...including the one Mr. Wilson plays.

It's almost like Urban wrote that for him.

But, indeed, it feels like we have reached the point in recruiting where we have gone as far as we can go, done the maximum possible, without winning more games. If we win 10, our recruiting game, with this staff, will go nuclear.
But do we have the right OL-QB combo to get that done?
Expiring minds want to know.
I mean inquiring minds.

Great post, Joe. Clearly not expiring too much...or too soon!!

I think it was more an indictment of player development versus W-L records.

i'd guess that he's heard it multiple times out of ohio.

I think it was more an indictment of player development versus W-L records.

when i look at the last 4 years of WRs, what evidence suggests it wouldn't be player development?

I'm sad we lost Hemephill-Mapps because I think he, CJo, and LJH were a good trio of guys who could perform and change perception.

Not sure he realizes that the Ted Gin and Joey Galloway years are long in the past. IMHO a combination of:
* lack of success on the field;
* No proven QB system;
* Someone convinced him that Gilbert's failure was 100% on Mack and things haven't gotten better; and
* lack of decent receiver coaching over 3 staff changes (until the Maryland game we will not know if the current group of receivers know how to run proper routes.)

I agree with a lot of what you guys are adding to the discussion. Good posts.
For myself, I see an unsettled QB situation with unremarkable overall production and a suspect offense. Factor in protection problems, of course.
When looking at the college football landscape, the talent disparity and production disparity between teams doesn't always jive. Some places get more out of less. Some get less out of more. Some get less out of less. And some get more out of more. Whether talking wins/losses or individual production, I'm afraid UT has generally been in the getting less out of more crowd recently...at least on offense.
This is what has to change.

"He (speaking of Bear Bryant) can take his-uns and beat yours-uns and then turn around and beat his-uns with yours-uns". -Bum Phillips

(Don't any of you dare criticize my spelling or punctuation there!;))

Holland put in a Texas CB for WR Jake Smith
Full speed ahead

We offered 2019 4-star WR Jake Smith (6'1,185) of Notre Dame Prep in AZ. He has a long offer list including Bama, Arizona, UCLA, Wash St, Wisconsin and Penn State. He had 118 carries for 1,135 yards and 11 tds as a junior + 33 receptions for 1,055 yds and 15 more tds.
#176 overall, #30 WR and #3 player in Arizona, per 247Comp.
We are supposed to be in good shape with him

I don't think we have top flite WR depth, but we do have quality depth. I'd be surprised if a WR grad transfer would see us as a favorite.

RB, TE, DT, Edge? Any of those have potential to step in and be a difference maker from Day 1. (like our OL grad transfers)

jmo

I have to admit I don't care for GW. For him to not only turn his back on Texas football, but to then bash the program after they spent hours and hours treating him far better than most people ever receive in their lifetime makes me say, "GOOD RIDDANCE."

ZING!!

Yeah. It shouldn't matter but I've spoken with my 21 year old son about social media many times. He didn't have to say what he said. It could have been discussed with his parents. It's not about a family atmosphere (his teammates); it's about him. He's doing it for the NFL, which is certainly understandable, but he decided the coaching staff at UT should have to live now with the reasons for his rejection though they've only been there for one year.

Not only that but I think he wasn't being honest about the player development comment. It was Tom Herman's first year. The school he's going to Ohio St had a OC there named Tom Herman that had to replace two QB's and use a 3rd stringer to win the National Championship. The QB play hasn't been impressive since Tom left there. Sounded like an excuse or maybe Meyer gave him a script to throw another shot at his former coach using Wilson.

i'm really hoping for the Cal RB

I think the only grad transfer I was really hoping for was Anderson on the O-line.
And there mainly for depth. Not because I feel he's a super star.
We have players as good as or better than most any school in the country.
Coach em up damnit!
Orlando proved it can be done with his defense last year.
Coach the players on offense and scheme to put them into the best possible position to win.
Don't just show up with the same old thing saying "We'll win just as soon as we get the players to fit what we want to do".
Be creative.

I dont think it was about Herman either. GW is from Lake Travis and they have an institutional chip on their shoulder regarding the lack of development and subsequent treatment of Gilbert Grape. Conflate that with Urban's similar obsession with Herman and there you go.

This story is making the rounds. For example, I heard a couple of the AM radio goofballs on Houston bring it up this afternoon, and these guys rarely discuss college ball. They used Wilson's comments as an opening to unload on Herman with two of them (Sean Pendergrast & Ted Johnson) openly stating they hope he fails at Texas. They even took a quick swipe at Herman's wife. Part of this has to do with Herman canceling his show on their station while he was at UH due to the open hostility from one of that station's other talkers -- John Lopez who is a fat, lazy aggy tool of the aggy Sports AD. And if you think i am letting go, I am not -- I am actually holding back from what I would say in person.

Hines to Oregon
LJH is the slot, I guess
We still have a good shot at grad transfer RB Watson

Here is something more on the slot from BON ....

" ..... Of the three players who saw time at the position during the spring, none fit the mold as well as Hemphill-Mapps... After catching seven passes for 100 yards in the first half and running for another 14 yards with two touchdowns, junior Lil’Jordan Humphrey emerged as the top option .....

At 6’4 and 220 pounds, Humphrey is too fast for linebackers and too tall for smaller cornerbacks, allowing quarterbacks to fit the ball into small windows between defenders, as sophomore Sam Ehlinger did in the Orange-White game to set up Humphrey’s first touchdown run. Late in the first half, Humphrey also showed an ability to create separation against cornerbacks on out routes that picked up big chunks of yards and allowed him to get out of bound. In the passing game, Humphrey showed a high level of rapport in working with the team’s prospective starting quarterback.
* * *
On the White team, senior Jerrod Heard, who mostly worked outside during the last two seasons, received the start and turned in a solid performance with four catches for 89 yards, including a 38-yard reception from junior Shane Buechele on a perfectly-thrown pass.

Heard is also an option on jet sweeps and taking handoffs in the backfield, though he wasn’t as effective last season as Humphrey has been in his Texas career in that role. However, Heard does bring an element that Humphrey doesn’t — the ability to throw passes as a former quarterback. In the Orange-White game, the most successful trick play was a double pass to Heard that he completed to senior John Burt for 20 yards. It’s also a play that Texas could use off of the jet sweep look.

Finally, redshirt freshman Jordan Pouncey also received a look in the slot behind Humphrey on the Orange team. The 6’2, 195-pounder had a 32-yard reception down the seam from early enrollee Cameron Rising and also carried the ball once for three yards. A part-time running back in high school at Winter Park in Florida, Pouncey averaged 8.9 yards per carry as a senior and scored 12 touchdowns on the ground.
* * * *
With Joshua Moore enrolling in several weeks and set to provide a fourth option during the fall, the spring development in the slot rewarded the confidence that Herman verbalized in Heard and Humphrey back in early April....."

Crap, I hope no one else thinks like that. But I suppose all prospects are told that.

Glad you added these comments, Bystander. I agree he could have and should have handled it differently. Maybe we'll see him in a bowl in a few years and we can #### #### ###!!
I'm guessing he wasn't being malicious, just unthoughtful

This is making the rounds...looks to be ____________(fill in the blank with your own theory). Shown up on at least 3-4 major media outlets online today including CBS and ESPN.
