2019 Recruiting - Football

I’ve watched a lot of people go to Texas with a ton of ability and maybe not achieve what I thought they could. I didn’t want to be one of those guys.”
I see this as a dose of reality, and I personally have no issue with the statement. It’s hard to argue the point.

When we start performing on the field, the issue will become moot. That needs to start happening 9/1/18.

Texas had a bigger issue under Mack Brown when Stoops beat us 5 straight. Back then the talk was soft, and pampered.

What GW said, was purely a message to other recruits, and believe me there are tons of coaches already telling them this stuff.

Texas has to win and put guys in the league, they do that and there isn't a recruit that will turn Texas down. This is 100% fixable, but it needs Tom to take his program to the next level now.

Wilson is correct in his statement but it happened under Mack and Strong. Shouldn't be a factor now. But if he wants to go elsewhere it's fine by me.

It's seriously pathetic. I've officially become a grumpy old man. I don't care for this at all and the fan bases that cheer on the home team are also starting to annoy me. It's all mercenary driven. They don't mean anything to me. I don't know them. I don't want to know them. I only go to games because it's somewhat enjoyable. I'm starting to lose even that feeling. Maybe GW helped me to finally grow up.

A snippet from Bevo Nuggets

— With Garrett Wilson off the board, Texas could extend some more wide receiver offers this week. Mehringer is stopping by to see Baylor commit Jaylen Ellis on Monday, and a scholarship is possible. But this won’t exactly be a slam-dunk. Ellis has been waiting on a Texas offer for a while and now feels like a secondary option. If Texas goes down this road, it will have to play catch-up, as Ellis isn’t over the moon about the way the process has played out.

4-star OLB/DE NaNa Osafo-Mensah is supposed to announce May 19
We are in good shape although he did just OV to Notre Dame

The Georgia high school group will be announcing today. What a talented team they must have.

Sounds like we are in good shape with Kenyatta Watson but Owen Pappoe may want to stay closer to home

I won't take issue with your statement. I said much the same myself in an earlier post and there is truth to it.
But...I've been wanting to write a piece for awhile now on certain types of recruits/personalities and why they choose the schools they do and how that plays out in culture/program performance...but that effort has been constrained by time.
I'll just say this....
Mr. Wilson's twitter account says he is interested in "building his brand".
Let that sink in...coming from a 17 year old kid.
The funny thing is, even just by saying that you already are building it dude... Your brand will be recognized as part of the narcissistic, me-first, self-absorbed post-millinialist generation. That is how you will be branded...at least by this consumer.
We are looking for young men interested in building the UT brand. You can take your brand back to Ohio and see if those buck-nuts find it more appealing.

Have you ever heard a crappier excuse for music?

Does he really have a 45" vertical leap? I don't think James Lott had 45.

This glorification of 17 yr old kids is getting nauseating. But, you have sell your soul these days to compete for championships....it comes with the territory. And Herman is demonstrating he can play this game very well. Now, how about a few championships!

Buck,

I watched all four young men make their announcement. I found they handled it with class and dignity unlike the **** you see at the Army AA Game.

Each politely thanked God, their family, their coaches, others who helped them along the way, then announced without a lot of superfluous ********. Each politely answered questions. Fox Atlanta tried to turned it into a circus, and really showed what a classless, half-assed group they are.

Sabre,

I had the same take-away. Very humble kids who praised God & others for their blessings & special gifts. That tape should be shown as training tool for the NFL!! Fox 5 going full-on-ESPN to grandstand the event. Maybe the NCAA will move signing day to Jerra World next February...:e-face-tears:

Couple recruits to watch right now...both previously discussed...
Nana Osafo-Mensah LB/WDE
and
Tyler Johnson OL
Gap has closed with Nana between us and ND to 50/50 and sits at 100% good guys right now with Johnson.
Both would be great gets for '19 and timing would be nice.
Also wanting to see Tre Watson come to the ATX right away please.
Would love to hear who you guys are watching...

A quote from Garrett Wilson --

“They were close. I’m not going to lie, the official visit made me think about them a little more. In the end, I’ve watched a lot of people go to Texas with a ton of ability and maybe not achieve what I thought they could. I didn’t want to be one of those guys.”

Ouch......that is it. ^This^ ^This^ ^This^ is what I would have thought recently (last 6 years or so prior to 2017 season) as a recruit myself, though I do not think it will apply for 2018 moving forward.
He said what some others have thought previously, but I do think he is underestimating the coaching/culture change. As I said just the other day....it is "Show me" time for Texas.
What an indictment on recent coaching/staff/program and an honest answer from a recruit.
I do think this has already begun to change and will not be the case moving forward, but can't deny it has been true.
Edit: I wrote this with a few skill positions in mind, primarily...including the one Mr. Wilson plays.

This^^^ is the wicked truth! I take the same approach, it's time for the coaches and team to ramp it up. This wallowing around in the mud like a common drunk outside the saloon begging for a drink has to end. I too, believe that Tom and Company are headed in the right direction, but this year they need to show me, no check that, they need to show ALL of us something extra. Then keep up the momentum to eventually and have recruits banging on the door clamoring for a coveted offer.

Air conditioned suites with dining facilities, open bars and TV monitors all around and a stadium that will hold 130K fans might impress a lot of folks, but recruits look at the productivity on the field, and want to see they will be developed by the coaches into highly skilled football players that will annually win and be competing for conference championships, for a slot in the playoffs and for the NC, and not to finish 6-6 and play in the "who cares bowl" to end the season with a winning record. The time has come....show us something damnit!!

I nominate BevoJoe to give the pregame locker room speech in Maryland Sept. 1.
