2019 Recruiting - Football

So I may have missed it but has there been any feedback from the visitors to the spring game just in general? I see there’s a couple hints of commits but there was a ton of OVs. Just curious....because I’m worried slightly by our performance (megaphone: offensive line).

Two more things: in future spring games do not use that lineup format (I mean why were oline playing ball sides they never have before, they should’ve have had a depth chart and stuck to it—same position in most cases, definitely same side of ball) with a banged up, thin oline coming off an atrocious year. Total buzzkill. I turned the game off about 20 min in because I’d felt duped yet again (then finally went back to rewatch). I say that because I imagine I wasn’t alone. What instead? Idk. I’m not Mensa and I’m not getting paid millions of dollars but I nor any fans nor recruits wanna see more parts than there should’ve been of big ol turds being laid on the field disguised as protection and blocking. Also, play the EEs, like a lot as we’re (hopefully) gaining steam. We will not likely have the W column to compete with the teams we’re competing with. Every little bit helps. Did Eagles even play? Anyways, not only are they good this year specifically and need reps because a few will play this year, but it’s also attractive to the OVs.

I know this won’t reach anybody in the athletic department but it feels damn good to say.

The vast majority were UOVs
I think the only OV may have been Garrett Wilson of Austin Lake Travis --

"The visit was really good. I spent a lot of time with some of the players and coaches. Loved seeing my UT family. My parents ate dinner at coach Herman's house on Friday night. They answered a lot of my dad's questions."

"On Saturday, I hung out with Sam Ehlinger almost the entire time. I have a lot of respect for Sam. Cade Brewer and Brennan Eagles joined along some too. We ate lunch with coach Huff and rode in his Tesla."

"As for the game, they did a great job of throwing the ball during the (Spring) game. I liked it when they let the wide receivers make plays. Like Lil Jordan (Humphrey), just getting him the ball in space and letting him work, I want that."

"I'm slowing it down a little. Texas and Ohio State are even to me. This weekend reminded me how much I like it at (UT). I can see myself here."

WR Kenyon Jackson (Loganville, GA) will not be coming with high school teammates LB Owen Pappoe and CB Kenyatta Watson to Austin this weekend.

We offered 2019 4-star WR Jake Smith (6'1,185) of Notre Dame Prep in AZ. He has a long offer list including Bama, Arizona, UCLA, Wash St, Wisconsin and Penn State. He had 118 carries for 1,135 yards and 11 tds as a junior + 33 receptions for 1,055 yds and 15 more tds.
#176 overall, #30 WR and #3 player in Arizona, per 247Comp.
We are supposed to be in good shape with him

This was Jalen Catalon

Mnasfield Legacy's Catalon has a Top 5 of Piglet, Clemson, tOSU, TCU and Texas. He has not taken any OVs yet and probably wont decide until Jan. They say he is building a good bond with safeties coach Craig Naivar and likes Austin. He also is a good baseball player and we are willing to let him play here. He has watched a Texas weekend series already and met the team and coaches.

Thank ya Joe as always. Really want this kid. (And being from LT it’d be nice to see a Cav turn into legit player here.)

I just went and watched his video. His first 3 steps are so fast. He also has great field vision. He will be a guy that will move the chains as a Horn. I hope we get him.

This is a huge stretch coming up for us. School is wrapping up...Spring/Summer is in the air. People in good moods, time for lasting impressions. Texas in a great place to really lay some solid groundwork. Hope they pull it off. I'm confident they will put the effort in. We are seeing more visits from 5*s (not that that's everything) and more looks from higher touted linemen it seems. Both good signs. I believe we have a pretty strong channel of QBs lined up in Thompson, Rising, Johnson. Likely a few nasty linemen (mostly offense) away from doing some real damage. The one question in my mind for now will be the coordination of the offense.

Ever since scholarship limits, I've felt the Texas Longhorns had the national cache to recruit anyone, anywhere. Especially in down years for in-state recruiting classes or even just down years for whichever specific in-state position group (like either line, for example!). But with a couple notable exceptions, we never did it. I saw it as not maximizing our natural (and hard won) advantages. I always thought it was dumb and even lazy (esp in light of the comparative salaries we were paying these guys). We were letting our brand waste and it bugged the crap out of me. Finally it appears we have a staff that has seen the light. They are prioritizing it. They've made a plan and are now executing the plan. I like what I see and I'll be disappointed if they get run out before we've had the chance to get this pipeline fully operational.

^^This^^
This is key. Alot of people don't realize how much more/stronger competition there is for in-state talent these days. This fact makes your point all the more relevant.

I realize a small sample and it could be the time of the year, but an awful lot of out of state guys on that list. It appears that Herman is covering in-state recruiting issues with out of state guys. He is hitting back at the upper tier $EC schools (Alabama, Georgia, Florida and LSU) by chasing 4 and 5 Stars in the Southeast. The issue is that leaves Texas to aggy and ou both of which are saying thank you.
Herman needs to do something on the field to show he has a strategy with all of this. aggy will never doing anything even if they get 50 5 stars, but continued losing more than winning against ou ain't going to cut it.

You said a mouthful with that last comment, Viper.
National media looks at OU as bellwether Big12 right now. Start kicking their butts and it will make a huge impact on not just perception... but reality.

...Now I'm in a debate with myself about use of the word "bellwether".
Can I say ....?
No...not PC.
Hmmmm.....
I need an alternative.

That said, we, as part of the Big XII, need OU to be the bellcow until Boren is gone. At that point, if OU pulls "a Texas" in the selection of their new president, the Big XII will cease to exist, other than as a shell of its former self.

Safety out of Atlanta commits to Irish. Ripple effect from Kenyatta Watson decision??? Only time will tell

Too bad they didn’t show the butadiene plant in the background (to the right of camera).

Neches Butane is behind the camera. To the right of the photo is the remnants of the old Texas-US Chemical, a joint venture of US Chemical (UniRoyal) and Texaco. Most of that plant has been torn down, but they still have their loading flange on the Neches River. Neches Butane was originally a joint venture of BF Goodrich and Texas US Chemical to provide them the material.

Yes, and Jefferson Chemical’s butadiene plant supplied material to make synthetic rubber. Jeff chem was JV between Texaco and American Cyanamid
