2018 Roster

4 weeks means they miss everything through Tulsa and probably USC on the 15th. 6 weeks mean they miss everything through K-State and probably TCU. Going to be borderline redshirt years.

Texas did not give a timeframe, but neither did Texas say they will be back in a few days. Hence the question mark. It is at least possible one or both might be back sooner.

Not any more. They could redshirt and still be available the last 4 games of the season...

Missing 6 weeks is huge in conditioning. I don't care what the S&C guys say - if you cannot run- you cannot stay in football playing shape. So 6 weeks before medical release then 2-3 weeks to get back in shape so you don't get hurt on the first series. Arm and upper body injuries that do not limit running will not require minimal extra time to get back into shape because you can run.

The coaches already know what these two can do so the issue now is to have them ready for 2019.

Here is some BON on the suddenly dire situation at LB --

" .... Last week, Texas announced that junior Jeffery McCulloch would miss several weeks with a strained pectoral muscle, which prompted true freshman safety DeMarvion Overshown’s move to linebacker. Just days later, though, Overshown, who was lining up as the second-team Rover behind Gary Johnson, went down with a knee injury during the Longhorns first scrimmage of fall practice, as did fellow freshman and second-team Mac linebacker Ayodele Adeoye.

Both players will miss an extended period of time, including the season opener against the Terrapins, so the Longhorns will proceed with just six healthy scholarship linebackers — Johnson, Anthony Wheeler, Malcolm Roach, Cameron Townsend, Joseph Ossai, and Byron Vaughns.

Redshirt sophomore linebacker Demarco Boyd remains indefinitely suspended after his arrest for misdemeanor assault.

To add insult to injury, Johnson has been bitten by the injury bug multiple times, from an ankle injury last year to a groin injury during the spring to the mild shoulder sprain he’s playing through this fall. Wheeler will be suspended for the first half of Texas’ season-opening meeting with Maryland on Sept. 1 due to a targeting ejection during the second half of the Texas Bowl victory over Missouri. Townsend has hardly seen the field at Texas since signing in 2015, and Ossai and Vaughns, of course, are true freshmen.

If this crop of talent can’t add a healthy body or two in the coming weeks, the Longhorns first-team defense when Texas takes the field at FedEx Field will feature Johnson at Rover, Roach at B-Backer, with Townsend likely making his first career start in-between the two at Mac until Wheeler returns for the second half. Or Roach could move to Mac, with Ossai taking over his role at B-backer....."

IT thinks --
Adeoye will be out 2-4 weeks
Overshown out 4-6 weeks.
Good news on Adeoye...except for the whole missing for Maryland part.
We need able bodies...and I believe redshirting any capable contributor at LB this year to be a luxury we do not have.
The Wheeler (wack) suspension is looming even larger than I thought it might.
Linebacker will likely be the most important position group on the field against Maryland's style of offense.

Matthew McConaughey at morning practice --

"I don't have many affiliations. I've got God, I've got my family, I've got America, I've got Texas and I've got the Longhorns, you know. So this is one of those things that's non-negotiable for me wherever I go."

Yancy McKnight has Marqez Bimage (true sophomore) squatting 700-pounds
And Kris Boyd up to 345-pound bench, 315-pound power clean, 600-pound squad and close to a 40-inch vertical jump

Listening to Rod Babers and he says he has heard that Shane is outplaying Sam the last two practices.
Very interesting if true. I, like many, have seen it as Ehlinger's job to lose - and quite honestly favored him personally. Wouldn't it be something if Shane ended up being "the man".

I pro Sam and pro Shane. The best man should win. I do think there is something to the "he's a gamer" concept that coaches need to trust, but you gotta make the reads and throws in practice and not give the ball up. Whoever that is, I'm good.

We practice today then scrimmage on Saturday --

“Most of the two-deep will be set after the scrimmage. We’ve got to prepare to win a game on Sunday. We’ve got to know who the guys are that we are able to do that with.”

From the AAS --

" .... The team’s leading rusher last year was a player who started six games and played in only nine — and was a quarterback. Sam Ehlinger rushed for a team-high 385 yards. The third-best rusher, Chris Warren III, got moved to tight end during the season. Warren was so angry at the coaching staff, he left school early for the NFL.

Spring practice wasn’t much better. Herman was so frustrated by the running backs’ production in late March, he said, “Right now, there are open tryouts at that position.” The coaches pulled a linebacker over to the offensive side to see if he would hold onto the ball. ...."

Here’s a look at the seven running backs on the Texas roster this year:
  • Tre Watson, graduate transfer: Watson was actively pursued by multiple schools this offseason after his graduation from California. He averaged 8.1 yards per carry in four seasons. But it’s unclear how effective he can be after a torn anterior cruciate ligament injury last season.
  • Kyle Porter, junior: The most experienced athlete in the room based on games played, Porter was a textbook downhill runner in high school. But that doesn’t exactly translate to the college game. He’s averaged 3.7 yards on 118 attempts in 22 games.
  • Kirk Johnson, junior: The brother of receiver Collin Johnson, Kirk Johnson played in six games in 2015 before missing time due to injury. Then, he missed the entire 2016 season with a knee injury. He got back on the field last year in a special teams role.
  • Tristian Houston, junior: Houston was considered the 65th-best prospect in Texas coming out of Galena Park North Shore. He’s had a hard time moving up the depth chart. Houston, who redshirted in 2015, has played in only two games.
  • Toniel Carter, sophomore: Born in New Orleans and raised in Houston, Carter started against Iowa State and Oklahoma State last season. He averaged 4.8 yards per carry on 53 attempts last season. But he’s got to secure the ball better.
  • Daniel Young, sophomore: Another Houston product, Young started the last five games and showed real promise. He averaged 4.6 yards per carry and caught 13 passes for 153 yards. He had to get stronger this offseason to be an every-down candidate.
  • Keaontay Ingram, freshman: Ingram had back-to-back 2,000-yard seasons at Carthage and played in the Under Armour All-America game. He also set the school record with 76 touchdowns. Texas coach Tom Herman has already said Ingram has “wow” in him.

I hope they scrimmage with linebackers on the bench
