2018 Recruiting - WBB

Nylissa Smith is way high (the top?) of my wish list for '18. She looks so quick and aggressive, but also great height. Sorry we're only one of 15 at this point, but maybe we have a good shot.

ESPN Feature on Nalyssa:

"She won't narrow her list to five schools until March. In the meantime, she rattled off the schools she is considering: Baylor, Texas, Kansas, Texas Tech, TCU, Ohio State, Arizona State, West Virginia, Connecticut, Louisville, Oregon State, Notre Dame, Maryland, UCLA and Tennessee."

I would be very surprised if the Longhorns don't make the cut.

really like this quote from the article above on NaLyssa:
But Smith is far more than a prototypical post player. She is so skilled that she initially shocked East Central assistant coach Keyondra White, who joined the team last year to mentor the guards.

On her first day of practice, White asked the guards to join her.

"We break up -- bigs over there, guards over here," White said. "When she comes with me, I'm like, 'What in the world?'

"But right away, she's doing ballhandling drills, hitting pull-up jumpers. Then she started knocking down 3s, left and right, and I knew she was special."

I'm kind of surprised NaLyssa's list of schools was so long, especially wit 4 in-state schools listed; glaringly absent was Texas A&M. I think she stays in-state.

Since Vic Schafer left for Miss. St. Gray Blair's recruiting efforts have not done well! When Gary Blair retires at A&M Vic will be back and in the hunt for top in state recruits again.

New big on the 2018 radar? 6-5 Uchenna Nwoke, the #7 center in the class, of South Grand Prairie gained 2 Twitter followers today: Coach Aston and Coach Thompson. Anyone seen her play?

We got some fans from that area. Hopefully, some can catch one of her games this season and give us an eyewitness report.

Definitely planning on it. She should come out of high school well-coached, as Samantha Morrow is at SGP.

Another post player who started following Texas on twitter and vice verse is 6'5 Shakira Austin of Virginia; she is teammates with Megan Walker in club ball. I believe she was also in Houston this weekend for the JLE.

Love hearing this about a post!

wouldn't it be sweet to get Collier and Prince back in the fold? That is one impressive list of visitors. Had no idea that we were in on Samantha Brunelle. I have heard nothing but good things about her.

That's a nice looking group of players with Kennedy Brown. Pretty tall young girls make our coaches look short. :smile1:

Premiere Basketball scout Shane Laflin on offer Honesty Scott-Grayson and Sedona at JLE:

(Following his take on Megan Walker) "Honesty Scott-Grayson (2018 – MD) is a similar playmaker. She is a fundamentally sound and supremely talented player. She makes plays without forcing the action or trying to do too much. She stands out whenever she is on the floor."

"Sedona Prince (2018 – TX) has come off the summer circuit with a renewed focus. Her pace and effort were particularly noticeable during the whole camp. She did not miss a chance to run the floor or fight for a rebound. Her motor was impressive all weekend. It is interesting to watch a 6’7 fluid moving athlete such as Prince in all the drills: she does not look out of place during any of them. She handles the ball in the ball handling drills like a guard (two balls, tennis ball drills.. doesn’t matter), her footwork into her jumper and her release is as smooth and soft as anyone in the gym, and even in full court 1 on 1 – she just went to work. In the games she displayed her court vision and her passing skills to cutting teammates or players running the floor for advance passes. She could afford to be more aggressive on the offensive end, sometimes forgetting that she plays on a plane that many do not because of her height, but she is always aware of her teammates on the floor. This is a basketball player, not just a big. Her physical upside has not even been touched yet, so watch out in the next calendar year as she commits to the weight room and the department of strength and physical improvement. There is still a lot of upside there."

Definitely Nalyssa Smith (blue #65) was the most dominant player at the I-45 Shootout. This was my first time to catch her. She has the body of a power forward, dominated the post defensively, and couldn't be contained from the offensive glass for strong put backs with defense around her. Yet she has guard like skills and is able to grab the defensive rebound and lead transition. In many ways she plays similarly to Joyner Holmes, though Joyner's quickness, speed, and jumpability is a rung higher than Nalyssa. Nalyssa was the team high scorer for her team at 15 points.

Queen Egbo (yellow #16) is a traditional back to the basket post player. Doesn't venture outside the paint but once she establishes the low post she's able to finish easily with her jump hooks as she has one of the higher verticals. But her offensive skills remain raw. Defensively she's a presence in the paint and will block a ton of shots. During a defensive breakdown, she sprinted from the paint and was able to block the 3-point shot of an opposing guard. Because of her body size and jumpability, she's tough to contain off the glass. Queen finished with 9 points.
