2018 Recruiting - WBB

This team certainly has an abundance of talent coming. Wonder if Coach K is feeling some stress? With all these top level players it's a given that she has to get them to the F4 and then to win a National Championship. I've read other boards and some are saying that her recruiting ability far outweighs her coaching. I guess we will find out.
I don't think Coach Aston is feeling any pressure or stress; she has very high goals for herself and her program. She is a competitor and wants to win championships at all levels.

At this early point in her head coaching career, I'd say that she is a better recruiter than an X's and O's coach; there's nothing wrong with that. So many said the same thing about Mack Brown; so many still say the same thing about Jerritt Elliott; each ended up competing for and winning championships. But, you have to lure the talent in order to mold into a champion. You can't compete with UConn consistently if you don't have the level of talent they have on their roster.

When you look back at 2015-16, Coach A managed to get her team to the Sweet 16 despite having lost Nneka Enemkpali to injury. It was a milestone for her program. You don't win that round of 32 game on the road without being a good coach, especially against a veteran team like Cal with a couple of senior prospects who were high WNBA draft picks.

I am still on such a high from Charli's flip back to us even though I was told about it on Monday night; still not sure exactly when she decommitted from UConn (contacted their coaching staff) and/or contacted our coaching staff to check is there was still a spot for her. I thought it was very telling in her tweet yesterday where she pointed out that she would be taking her official visit to Texas on October 20 (still 4 weeks away) and signing her LOI on 11/09.

I won't hide from what I had posted several times that I didn't think Christyn Williams had us high on her list of 5 finalists; but, with Charli flipping, that changes my mindset; I think that provides us with one more "friend/teammate" who is close to Christyn.

So, assuming we are still pursuing Christyn Williams (which I think we are), which do you prefer:

- she take her scheduled official to Texas on 10/6 (followed by her last official visit to UConn on 10/13)?

- she reschedule her official to Texas to 10/20 to coincide with Charli's official visit? (that would add the risk that after her 10/13 UConn visit she remains uncommitted and want to take that last official visit to Austin)

I like option number 3: take the 10/06 visit and cancel the UConn visit the next week. :smile1:

I'm okay with staying with the current OV schedule.

I was feeling that the back court would be our strength, as least this coming year, but with this amazing front court coming in '18, I find myself thinking we need to shore up our back court even more. (The more you get, the more you want, it seems.) If Christyn Williams doesn't come here and we can squeeze someone else in, I'd sure be interested in Honesty Scott-Grayson. That's just from hearsay, seeing some stats, and watching a small amount of tape.

I'm still amazed at this 2018 recruiting class and all the ups and downs and twists and turns that came with it to get to this point; only want positive things between now and November 8 signing day.

I know a lot of posters/visitors on this thread are wondering how the numbers will work for next season (2018-19). I for sure don't have the accurate answers.

One thing that recently occurred to me which I have not speculated about up to this point is the chance Lashann Higgs, daughter of assistant head coach George Washington, does not stay on scholarship her senior season. Do children of UT coaches/employees get a discount on tuition, etc. ? Not that she isn't deserving to be on scholarship, but moreso to help the numbers work.

I think any "speculation" about how the numbers will work out is best left for the coaching staff. Karen and company know exactly what they are doing and how to effectuate it.

The big mystery:

I've seen posters on other boards wondering how Sedona and Charli would be used together as some assume they are both Centers. While I do think Sedona is best suited for Center, I think Charli is a traditional power forward who has the height/size to play/defend the Center position. In this write-up, they describe her as a "big-forward", and I like that label:

That's certainly how I envisioned her - a PF most of the time who could spin down to the 5 if the C gets into foul trouble, needs a rest. Basically, the way SC used Aja Wilson when Alana Coates was healthy.

Sedona and Charli will be just fine playing together. In case you hadn't noticed, Sedona is very mobile herself. This is going to be fun folks~~~~~

Well, I haven't really watched any Cy-Fair club ball or USA ball from this past summer to see how Sedona and Charli were utilized; but, they have experience being teammates, and that is a great start. While they both have height which we really haven't seen in tandem in our frontcourt in decades, when you combine that with their quickness, athleticism, strength, and skill, it really presents a lot of problems for our opponents offensively and defensively.

Charli and Sedona will make a devastating pair. Their strengths are compatible and their high-lo game will be near unstoppable.

Sedona can run. She's uses her speed to beat other post players, including Charli, down the court. She's athletic for her 6'7" frame and will be a terrific weak-side help defender. She's a true back-to-the-post player but will need further low post development.

Charli is highly skilled for a post player. She can handle the ball out on the perimeter, and dribble drive. She's a finesse player who likes to take high post and 3-point shots.

The game I watched, Charli and Sedona guarded one another; it seemed to me Charli knew Sedona was a terrific post defender and rarely tried to post-up Sedona. Instead most of her shots were from the outside, but she struggled to find her 3-point shot.

Curious about something, and opinions. Wonder if the coaching staff contacted Sedona before accepting Charli's commitment (Her feelings and thoughts about staying with her commitment, and Charli coming aboard with her)?? Or do they just accept it, and roll with it?? Again, just curious.

Of course none of us know for sure, BUT.....knowing what I know about Karen, I can't imagine that she didn't discuss it. She is as upfront and honest as they come. I see GREAT THINGS with this DYNAMIC DUO.

Well, back when Charli committed to Texas as an 8th grader, then Sedona committed shortly thereafter. So, the idea of them playing together was obviously something they were okay with early on. With them playing on the Cy-Fair club team for the first time this summer, along with USA basketball, they probably had plenty of time to discuss that option again. I believe there was an article that stated Charli started having second thoughts about her commitment to UConn a couple of months ago (which would mean July).

Recruiting BB for 2018 will REALLY change as of today. Especially for men's. When a coach( AAU or college), financial advisor, agent, etc. can now envision going to prison for up to 80 years........the dynamics suddenly change. One of the many things I like about women's BB is there isn't the financial incentive to pay recruits $100-$150k to play. I am not naive enough to think it doesn't go on.......but may be limited. As a former girls AAU coach I know it does go on.....most commonly to play for certain AAU teams, organizations, or high schools. However, you typically don't suddenly have a situation where B Bowen suddenly signs with a college like Louisville who had not been recruiting him and stiffs colleges (like Texas) that had been recruiting him for a long time. I hope that nothing like this shows up at ANY college on the women's side. There are a few program's that I might glow if that happened to them. But really I hope NO women's program is implicated in a similar mess as revealed today. I LOVE women's college basketball and want to continue to enjoy it without reservation.

In women's hoops recruiting, I only recall one instance of players being paid to attend a certain school; this was with Lamar University back in the early 1990's. Unfortunately for Texas, that Lamar squad was sent to Austin for an NCAA first round game against the Longhorns, and their super-quick guards fast-broke us all night long on their way to a huge upset; they went on to the Elite 8 before being beaten.

They sure play some great hoops in HTown ! There are some really outstanding names on that poll. Being a fair and biased fan, I think that the best girls BB is played in the DFW Metro area; however, you really cant argue with the talent on that list. Will be interesting to see who is the pre-season winner..... and then who steps up to be the post-season winner. I am NOT going to vote as it is too hard and stressful.

I'm a big time homer and just placed 10 votes each for Charli and Joanne.
