2018 Recruiting - Football

Another recruit to watch this weekend is WR Jalen Preston, long time aggy commit who visits aggy this weekend. No doubt they will be trying everything to get him to not show up in Austin the following weekend

If he does make it to Austin, then there is no doubt we will be showing him our newly revised WR depth chart. He's a good player, I hope he makes it

That same depth chart will hopefully get Waddle's attention as well

IT on Ojomo --

OU's confidence in the recruitment has waned (after his visit there)

and

Notre Dame sources that the ND staff felt like he would end up at Texas.

This is a new 2018 LB offer

This is Perroni (aggy) --
"Arkansas LB commit Andrew Parker was offered by A&M earlier this week and is working to set up an official next weekend. However, the school that people around him had told me would be a big player for him - but he hadn't heard from yet - was Texas. The Horns just offered him so it will be interesting to see what happens...."
update 1 -- Turns out he just set up a visit for next week

update 2 -- Which Perroni immediately followed with a CB to Texas! lol

What is going on with Hemphill-Mapps??

He was a major target of our QBs and got serious playing time as a freshman
I have always had "scratch my head moments" with coaching decisions regarding the use of receivers: Goodwin, foreman, Johnson, mapps, Duvernay come to mind. They all could be better utilized, stars even in my view. They all bring something to the table. So there must be behind the scenes issues that makes things difficult that I am not privy to. I would pick out my top two and teach them how to get open and bam

Agree over time. Adding that 2017 stands out as a poorly coached/schemed group.

I had just seen this yesterday and had no clue who he was or where he was from.

Duvernay was the one I couldn't figure out the most. We only threw to him a few times deep the whole year. When we did we got great results for big plays. Even if you send him deep here and there he is taking DB's out of the play. He's the fastest guy on the field no matter who we are playing.

We did offer OL Christian Jones
Highlights below

Another possible 2018 high school OL. Christian Jones (6-6,285) and Coach Hand started following each other on the twitter https://247sports.com/Player/Christian-Jones-46039688

Some bad news here
Looks like Keys' had a friend/teammate who just died
He was supposed to accompany Keys on his Texas OV.

No Tyree Wilson visit this weekend
But two key recruits are confirmed -- Moro Ojomo and Lawrence Keys....

Did you not watch our OL in pass D? Very little time for deep routes to develop, compounded by Shane's post-injury arm weakness and Sam's inaccuracy.

Got 4 years left but at 64 and only
5’8” I might not have the size. However, at just under 200# I won’t need to bulk up and I can play right away....for about 30 seconds.
245, 6'1" and 66 here. Maybe d-linemen would trip over me as I lay on the ground in the fetal position gasping for air.

I don't buy that at all. Did we have a bad OL? No doubt about it. We ran guessing 1,000 plays for the season and we can only attempt 2 or 3 deep balls to Duvernay on the season? We completed one deep ball to him against OU who was the best team on our schedule. But we can't against any of the other teams? Besides I can remember attempting deep balls to our WR's that don't have near the speed as Duvernay.

Keys did make it to town
Snippet from IT on this --

Keys will be escorted around by Jerrod Heard and Jordan Pouncey. Ojomo will be with Gerald Wilbon and Gary Johnson. If my read of Ojomo is correct, he's pretty no-nonsense. That will fit in with Johnson, who is becoming the leader of the team behind the scenes, not just on Twitter.

Joe, just for grins, do you feel like ranking the commits and players on the board, prioritized by importance, in your opinion? If you feel like adding a probability, all the better...

We might be on to something here.....48yo, 6'3" and 275lbs. I played tight end, but I'm "bigger" now so the shift to line shouldn't be too hard as long as the D doesn't figure out how to hop over us. :hookem3:

The two commits from prior to early signing (Keaontay Ingram and Keondre Coburn) are huge at key positions. But all seems fine with them. And, since then, we have added Daniel Carson and Michael Williams. Assuming all 4 of them are in that leaves --

(1) Calvin Anderson grad transfer LT. the perfect bridge tackle for Cosmi. If he goes elsewhere, I will be distraught.
(2) Moro Ojomo - 16yr old DT with high ceiling at a need position
(3) Jaylen Waddle - we need a slot and he is the perfect one for us, but I dont think we get him
(4) Casey Tucker - grad transfer RT who, sadly, seems locked into ASU now
(5) Joseph Ossai - DE or LB, he fits our scheme and conference well. I admit I like him more than some do
(6) Vernon Jackson - type of athletic DE with an upside the SEC seems to sign right and left every year. We are in it but probably need Bama to use up all their slots to force him to us
(7) Tommy Bush, Jalen Preston, Josh Moore, Lawrence Keys - all WRs which is a sudden need position due to transfers. I dont know who is best, although Preston looked fantastic at the UA Game. Bush has great size/speed combo but is ticked off at us. Keys and Moore seem most likely
(8) Caleb Okechukwu/Andrew Parker - defenders our coaches like
(9) Tanner McKee - QB who seems unlikely for us. But he's really good (2 year mission first). If I thought he was coming, I would probably rank him higher
(10) OL Christian Jones - project OT who has a good motor, good size, good work effort and loves UT. Plus, we need more bodies on the OL

I think we get Anderson, Ojomo, Ossai, Moore, Keys, Parker and Jones
To go with the aforementioned Ingram, Coburn, Carson and Williams
If I guessed right, the 2018 class size would be 30 (19 signed + 4 hard commits + my 7 guesses here)
I think Herman projected 28 or 29, so I am probably off by at least one or two

I feel another commitment coming on today - no good reason, just my vibe. A top-notch lineman on either side of the ball would be very nice.

As for you other old guys who are making yourselves available - I would have to project as a walk-on. I probably don't have the size Tom wants - 5'10", 175 lbs. I do have deceptive speed - I'm even slower than I look. :smile1:

Fort Worth All Saints Episcopal LB Luke Brockermeyer took his unofficial visit to Texas this weekend
He was offered a preferred walk-on spot, but no formal scholarship was offered at this time.
Technically, he's still committed to Rice

Blake was a good 'un!

I see some real potential developing for an untapped source of talent. That said I'm not sure most of us would stay out of the hospital (or perhaps the morgue)!

Well, on that note, I guess I have deceptive strength.
