2018 Recruiting - Football

ESPN made BJ Foster a 5-star.
He is our first ESPN 5-star since Johnathan Gray (2012)

That was enough to bump his 247 Composite score up 2 spots to #24 natl.

Tucker to ASU grad school is a head scratcher, unless he is going to Thunderbird, there isn't a grad school in Arizona that can touch the level of education Texas can offer.

However it is home for him, so there is that.

I he does choose Tempe, I hope he has a great NFL career, because that masters from ASU is about as valuable as bachelors from Southeast Oklahoma. If he chooses not to come to Austin, I can accept that, but he will be the first Stanford graduate in history to get his bachelors from a top ten school, and his masters from a top 200 school.

Tommy Bush Q&A sort of sounds like he (and his family) may not be willing to forgive the attention we gave some other WRs

by "Super K" --
" ..... I asked Tommy about Texas’ interest in him and how hard they appear to be pushing for him. He confirmed that Texas is indeed recruiting him hard but added, “Just wish this push would have been consistent throughout the process but I am glad they want me on campus”.

I asked Bush why he feels the push wasn’t consistent, “That’s what’s bothering me about Texas is that they told me that Vonte was about to commit and they wanted one more outside wide receiver and they already had the slot committed in Rondale…hard to figure”

Tommy said that Texas explained to him that at the time, they weren’t aware that they’d be able to take more than twenty five prospects. Whether that put him and his family at ease is something they are working through.

“I still really am unsure but I trust they are telling me the truth. They’ve been pretty good with me through this recruiting process…I think we as a family are good”.

Some followup on the same from Will Blaizer --

To add to what K has above, I checked in with Tommy’s father and was told that the visit, “..was great. [Coach Herman] spent close to 3 hours speaking with [our family] about why there was a break in communication, and why they came back so strongly. They told us they didn’t know they could recruit more than 25 this year plus with the other wideouts transferring it opened up a couple more spots.” As K mentioned above there are still some more work to do as Tommy had his doubts, but the staff did a good job at quelling them. Tommy was “…very comfortable and excited that the coaches came by and explained alot of the disconnect. He absolutely loved the 2018 guys as he’s played against Sterns since the 9th grade and has played in numerous events and camps with the other guys as well. He is definitely ready. Texas will just have to really close the deal and sell him on being their guy.”

We are also looking at a one-time high profile 4-star OLB from Calif Merlin Robertson (6'3,241). He is a top 25 inside California. At one time, he was high on the list of USC and ou, but it appears grades/tests scared them off. ASU is now considered the leader....

Sounds like we gave up on this one too. He's good, but I guess there are just too many issues

No Tyree Wilson visit this weekend

But two key recruits are confirmed -- Moro Ojomo and Lawrence Keys
Ojomo is supposed to be ou vs. Texas
Keys is supposed to be Notre Dame vs. Texas
It's probably good for us that the Austin visit is after

Another possible 2018 high school OL
Christian Jones (6-6,285) and Coach Hand started following each other on the twitter

It's crazy these days when they have OL by their name and the first thing you look at is his weight. You see 285lbs and think he's a little on the small side. :hookem:

I was thinking about that within the last couple days, when I was writing a post about the OL. As improved as we look like we will be in 2018 on the OL, we are still a tad light, IMO at least

Even if he was 5'10", I seem to remember a pretty good DB we had that was 5"10" if you stretched him some. Playing on Sundays these days.
Somehow I missed the fact that Eagles is big as he is. Just didn't pay attention.

I think his arm length stood out too. Will help a lot against the faster WRs

With the Hemphill-Mapps transfer rumor back on (+ Duvernay) it easily explains why we became so dogged in our pursuit of more WRs (Moore, Bush, Waddle,Preston)

What is going on with Hemphill-Mapps??

He was a major target of our QBs and got serious playing time as a freshman
Good question. I remember TH praising him for how much he loved the game of football and how much he even loved practicing. Maybe that was meant to soothe some raw nerves, though. IDK.
Even with time lost to injuries, he was was still third in total receptions. Not like he didn't get the ball.
