2018 Recruiting - Football

Snippet from Mike Roach on Carson

Strengths: Carson has a tremendous frame with great length and room to add weight. Carson uses his length well at the line of scrimmage to control offensive linemen and disrupt passing lanes. He shows good functional strength at the line of scrimmage, and he has the size to play both run and pass. Carson shows a strong motor, and his reach allows him cut off angles on the field in order to bring down the ball-carrier. He shows some advanced moves in the pass-rush, and his lateral ability is strong for his size. He can dip and bend to defeat offensive linemen, and he shows strong instincts. Carson can play several positions including 4i and defensive tackle, and that should allow him to see the field early in college.

Areas for improvement: Carson doesn’t possess much explosive ability, and he plays so high that his leverage is often negated. Carson will most likely need to add more weight to play at the next level, and he will need to keep his athletic ability as he continues to fill out.

Fit for Texas: Carson provides size and depth with a skillset to play strong-side defensive end or 4i in the Texas defensive scheme. Carson might need a redshirt year, but he could play in spot situations immediately if needed. Texas searched for a player in this mold all year, and landing Carson secures a key piece for their defense

".... After landing a commitment from three-star defensive lineman Daniel Carson on Friday morning, the Longhorns moved closer to the No. 2 spot in the 247Sports Composite team recruiting rankings.

Texas remains at No. 3 overall but now has an overall score of 292.11 with 22 commits.

Georgia sits at the top of the list with a score of 309.1 followed by Ohio State with a score of 306.10.

Carson’s commitment gives Texas a little bit of breathing room in terms of maintaining a Top 3 spot. Penn State is currently fourth with a score of 278.88, while Alabama is fifth with a score of 274.71.

Texas sits atop of the Big 12 rankings by a wide margin. Oklahoma is ranked No. 7 with a score 268.93 with 23 commits. No other Big 12 school is ranked in the Top 20."

2018 DE Caleb Okechukwu will visit Texas this weekend
(he has Tenn/Ark scheduled later)
From TFB -

Okechukwu is a 6’3/6’4 250 lb DE. He’s the type of hybrid guy who looks like he will carry 280 and end up a powerful and quick b-gap player.

Caleb says Texas has not yet received an offer from Texas but is hoping to pick up one this weekend. He says he can play 5 tech, OLB and the 4 tech but I suspect Texas is really looking at him as a 4i who can gap exchange. If you ask Caleb though he says, “I can do it all
”.

We are also looking at a one-time high profile 4-star OLB from Calif Merlin Robertson (6'3,241). He is a top 25 inside California. At one time, he was high on the list of USC and ou, but it appears grades/tests scared them off. ASU is now considered the leader.

We have been in contact with both he and his dad. Orlando just went to see him. We are supposed to be looking at his transcripts. Del Conte made something of a specialty at TCU of getting in partials and keeping them in. If he makes it in for an OV with the family, then it's probably on for us. He is a good player if everything else can be made kosher. And we are still light on LBs. So, we will see.

though such a terrible time to pull Carrington off the road

I think the idea now is all the guys we are after are coming to campus anyway
Plus Hand needs to get after the remaining OLs (he had an existing relationship with 3 of the bigger 2018 OL names who are still unsigned)

aggy/Michigan/South Carolina/Baylor/Stanford: 5 each

25 days until NSD - our recruiters need to keep the pedal to the metal. And we as fans need to remember that the results of a recruiting class don't normally show up on the field for two or three years - patience would be in order.

This is a great quality in an AD if it means getting the kid all the support he needs to succeed academically.
