2018 Recruiting - Football

Damone Clark: There is a lot going on right now with Texas and LB recruiting. The main guys being talked about are Texas commit Ayodele Adeoye and TAMU commit DaShaun White. Another name to keep an eye on is SU Lab (LA) LSU LB commit Damone Clark.

It was originally reported over last weekend that Clark had set up a Texas official visit. But I wanted to talk to him and some people close to him before talking about it on the board. He is set to visit Texas for the weekend of their regular season finale vs Texas Tech on November 24th.

After talking to him and a coach of his, it sounds like Texas is the #2 school here. But like I’ve said multiple times, it’s tough to flip a Louisiana kid from LSU. Clark has been committed to LSU for almost a year now. After LSU fell to Troy, I thought there was a shot Texas could take advantage of the Tigers slipping. But they’ve rebounded nicely since then, and Texas hasn’t done much on the field.

Getting Clark on campus is the first big step for Texas and they’ll be able to sell playing time with a guy like Malik Jefferson likely heading to the NFL. Clark really likes Todd Orlando and that’s keeping them in the running to flip him. And he is definitely a guy to watch as all the LB recruiting madness plays out between now and signing day. – (Andrew)

should we be worried

No, just high school kids and recruiting. What could go wrong?

Bubba Bean
Johnny Hector
David Stanley
Billy Sims
Keith Jackson
Marcus Dupree
Kerry Watkins

Times and people change; methods of cheating change; but when it comes to recruiting, always be afraid, be very afraid.

I'm trying to not make much of this........but should we be worried?

He just said he is 100% Texas
While the CBs had been flipping to ou, those were all before he said that. They were, I think, off the idea he would join Perkins. But people at their school say they are both alpha dogs and will each do their own thing.

I was just looking at our verbals for next season and was wondering who would be the top two impact freshman for next season excluding Dicker the kicker who will probably see a lot of playing time I'm guessing. I am thinking Eagles and green. Now if Ford and Cook join us then they would get my vote. Course there is a lot of different directions that could happen til signing day. Maybe I'm just a little bored.

Again, I stole this from a Longhorn FB group,

“Here is a full breakdown of recruits expected to be on campus. (For this weekend).

Official Visitors

WR Terrace Marshall, Bossier City (La.) Parkway — A five-star prospect and arguably the top wide receiver in the nation, Marshall is making his first trip to Texas since visiting for junior day back in the spring. So what are the chances here? Right now, Texas is very much on the outside looking in for his services. The Longhorns would most likely have to win out and hit a grand slam on his official visit this weekend. LSU seems like the heavy favorite in this recruitment.

TE Luke Ford, Cartersville (IL) — Texas recently lost a commitment from Dominick Wood-Anderson, the nation’s top junior college tight end, making Ford the top priority at the position. Texas has a commitment from Malcolm Epps at the position, but he will likely need a couple of years to develop. Ford has all the tools to come in and compete for early playing time. Texas has been in the mix for Ford since extending an offer in the offseason, but right now, the Longhorns have some work to do. Georgia is the heavy favorite.

ILB DaShaun White, Richland — It was a wild week for White as he contemplated visiting Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Texas. White finally decided to lock in his official visit to Texas and will get an in-depth look at the program this weekend. White is currently committed to Texas A&M but is wavering. Oklahoma made a huge impression on him last weekend and is considered the favorite to flip him, but the door is open for Texas to blow him away on his OV and overtake the Sooners. Texas was the favorite for White in the summer, but the Longhorns opted not to offer until last month.

Commits

WR Al’vonte Woodard, Houston Lamar — Woodard gave Texas a verbal commitment over the summer and has been one of the most solid pledges in the class. The four-star prospect is sure to help Texas recruit this weekend.

OL Reese Moore, Seminole — Moore was one of the first pieces of the puzzle this cycle and has stood firm with his commitment. A key pledge up front, Moore has the potential to be a cornerstone along the offensive line in a few years.

OLB Byron Hobbs, Fort Worth Eastern Hills — Hobbs has a game on Saturday but will rush over to Austin immediately following it. The three-star prospect is UT’s lone pass rusher pledge and has a ton of upside and potential. He is solid.

CB D’shawn Jamison, Houston Lamar — UT’s most recent commit, Jamison picked the Longhorns over a slew of major programs. He is excited to get back to campus this weekend and is already working on recruiting a number of major targets.

CB Jalen Green, Houston Heights — Green gave Texas a verbal commitment over the summer and has been extremely solid. However, both Alabama and LSU have been in contact as of late with the latter having a real chance to get him on campus for an OV.

S BJ Foster, Angleton — There is nothing to worry about with Foster. The nation’s top safety committed to Texas over the summer and has been one of the leaders of UT’s 2018 class. Foster is working hard on getting others to join him in Austin.

K Cameron Dicker, Lake Travis — Dicker isn’t the most talked about commit, but he is an important part of the class. Dicker has a chance to come in and compete for the starting kicker job right away. He is completely solid.

2018s on the radar

DL Joshua Landry, Houston Lamar — It’s no secret that Texas needs some help up front this cycle. And the Longhorns could be close to offering Landry. The three-star prospect is an athletic defensive lineman with high upside. He is currently committed to Baylor but could be a flip candidate.

DL Moro Ojomo, Katy — As stated, Texas needs help along the defensive line and is evaluating several prospects, including Ojomo. However, Ojomo’s build makes him a fit as a nose tackle, and the Longhorns might not be in the market for another take at the position with Keondre Coburn already on board.

DL Braden Cassity, Austin Westlake — Cassity is an intriguing prospect that is starting to garner some steam on the recruiting trail. At 6-foot-2, 240 pounds, Cassity is undersized and will need to add some weight, but he has potential. The three-star prospect holds offers from Wisconsin and a handful of G5 programs.

Underclassmen

WR Jaxon Smith, Rockwall (2020) — Texas doesn’t like offering prospects early, but the Longhorns are keeping a close eye on Smith. He holds an offer from SMU.

DE Marcus Hicks, Wichita (KS) Northwest (2019) — A four-star prospect, Hicks already holds an offer from Texas and is interested in the Longhorns. He is a top target up front for UT next cycle.

DE Breylon Garcia, Lufkin (2019) — Garcia could jump on the radar as a pass rusher next cycle but needs to add some weight to his frame. He has interest from a handful of schools.”

We seem to be getting a lot of interest from a lot of recruits already committed to other schools. More than usual anyway.

I remember seeing some stats not long ago that less players stick with their original verbals today than in the past. This is a trend in the last several years.

Thanks for the info... didn't like the TE reality check or that it might take OL Moore a few years to possibly be a cornerstone or that our lone pledge at edge rusher is a 3-star. That's why it takes multiple classes to build a program to fill in those missing pieces. WE NEED OFFENSIVE LINEMEN!

Uh oh

Ayodele Adeoye: I chatted with Texas LB commit earlier in the week, Ayodele Adeoye (IMG Academy). He confirmed that he will not be able to make the visit to Texas this upcoming weekend.

I asked him if he will definitely reschedule and his answer surprised me a bit. He said, “I don’t know”.

Surprise visitor -- LB/DE/QB from Boling -- Vernon Jackson (6'3,240) -- Alabama commit
We offered in the past
Word is that he may want to stay closer to home. He likes aggy, but with the turmoil there (when not playing New Mexico), we have a shot
Bama was looking at him as a LB (I think) but we like him as a DL

DE Joseph Ossai (Conroe) visited aggy with his parents this weekend
He has been there 3 weeks in a row now
Not sounding so good for us -- he likes our coaches but they say he likes the 'cult culture' at aggy
Not trending well for us

Chasen Hines did make it to campus
His mom is still pro-LSU and has even kept him from visiting Austin in the past
But he likes us, so we have a chance

He is buds with Keontay Ingram

5-star WR Terrace Marshall (Bossier City, LA) - the family liking Herman's sales pitch.
Dad said the visit is “very much exceeding our expectations”.
The competition is LSU, Bama, FSU and aggy

Highly ranked JUCO DE Dorian Gerald (6'3,250)
Decommitted from Tennessee where he had be committed for a long time
Vols have lost 5 recruits in the past few days

The Hobbs family supposedly stayed in Austin an extra night (at their own expense) to help recruit the family of DeShaun White.
