===== 2010 F1 Season Thread =====

As long as internally Porsche is allowed to stay in GT, they would have few problems moving the LMP program over to F1. I would think VW would want Porsche v. MB and Ferrari.

Looks like the Koreans are waiting to the very last moment: Link.

10 days for the surface to cure - could be an interesting adventure.

This guy, "aunty dive", on the Speed F1 board has a very solid rep as someone who works with these surfaces and knows the ins and outs. He's posted many times in the past on racing surface topics and his posts have turned out to be right on the money. He seems to think that as long as they laid their groundwork carefully, they're going to be ok.

They will go out Monday morning, do their compression tests on the straights and see that they can get the transporters in and out without getting stuck, so yes the race is on.

So Suzuka Qualy this a.m. was washed out. Continuous heavy rain. They're going to do it on Sunday before the race (8 p.m. our time tonight).

No word yet if Speed will air that live, but they will show it at 11 p.m. our time, right before the live race coverage begins at 12:30 a.m..

Looks like speed is opting to use the qualifying as a lead in to the race. Qual is at 8pm our time.

It's my day off, so I just decided to take on the Korea track on F1 2010. I practiced for a while, then raced twice. I qualified 3rd, but started 8th on the grid due to a 5 spot grid penalty for blocking after I spun in one of the concrete canyon sections of sector 3. I really had no choice, but oh well. The stewards in the game are not great, but the game itself is pretty damn awesome, imho, just like the real thing! I do understand that racing on video games is not the same as real life, but it can provide some valuable insights. This case is interesting in that this track has not yet seen a non-virtual lap turned in anger.

In both races I got great starts (not always the case) and was able to get to the outside (clean line) before turning in on turn 1. I passed several cars each time.

In race 1 I was in 3rd after turn 1 and doing well until I spun powering through the curbs on turn 3 after having moved up to 2nd. Hammy and Webbo passed me but I recovered quickly and got back after them. I was able to pass Hammy within 1.5 laps and Webbo by lap 5. Ended up 2nd to Vettel with a 115 mph avg speed.

In race 2 I outbraked Vettel at turn 3 in the first lap and he never could catch me once I got the #1 Ferrari
wink.gif
into clean air. I won this one easily with the fastest lap of the race at 1:43 & a little change. It will be interesting to see how close the avg speed and this time are to real life.

Looking at the track diagrams, this track looked like a lot of work and not much fun. It also looked very difficult to learn. It turned out to be quite the opposite on both counts. Very fun. Very easy to learn. Three excellent overtaking spots. Interesting technical dilemma for the engineers.

I think Red Bull will do well here IF they have good qualy and starts. If Ferrari can qualify well and start well, however, their balance should give the Bulls fits. The Ferrari's will probably be faster in the overtaking sections, much as they were in Hungary, where Vettel never could get around Alonso in the twisty bits. McLaren may have trouble with sectors 2 & 3 unless their aero upgrades help.

Any of you who have a PS3 or 360 and play racing games need this game. Awesome fun. Great way to learn the tracks in a way you never can watching the races on tv, even if you never really get good at it, you'll get a feeling for very realistic timing and quickness of what happens out there at the very least.

Raced a little more last night and cut it by 1.5 sec to 1:41.8 with a more adaptable setup and better braking and throttle management. Not easy with a controller. I'm sure I could do a lot better with a wheel/pedals setup.

I'm barely watching the race from Suzuka now on dvr. I have not read above this. Wow, that start was CRAZY. 4 cars out already and they are under caution.

How badass is that Mercedes pace or safety car? It's crazy fast. Imagine being the driver of that and how cool it would be until you look in your rear view at the absolute demons behind you swerving to create friction and keep the tires hot. Those cars in your rear view can suck you through their tailpipes without so much as a hiccup.

That's all.

Love that car. At the Mercedes display at the Canadian GP, they had a beautiful black one and I took some pics. Maybe I'll host and post them later, along with some pics from the weekend.

Also, re: the Yeongam lap times, I've lowered that 1:43+ to about a 1:40 flat with some practice and a little setup tweaking. That may be about as good as I can get it with a controller. I've talked to a guy on the Speed board who's running 1:38s with a wheel setup.

Renault says their simulations show a 1:44 lap time in Korea: Link

If they are saying 1:44, they probably looking for 1:40/41

Wow...it's pretty remarkable, imho, that the game is even in the ballpark on a track that's never been run by anyone.

I am sure when the FIA released the track to the teams, either they also released the track to the game maker; or the game maker "bought" the track from one of the teams. Once the game maker had the track, they probably ran the same simulations.

That all said, I agree, the results on the game are amazing!

First reports from Korea. Note the comment on the work still being done on the track in the first Link. Link Link

You do not roll a "cured" track, so either they reinforced some sections requiring a roll, or they are not sure what has cured. However, Tilke says no problem. Link

Friday will be interesting for sure

Wow.

I have to say it was very interesting watching the times fall off on a brand new track and wondering how long it would take for the guys to beat my time.

I must admit I'm happy that it took them 47 minutes into Practice 2 to finally eclipse my 1:40 flat (controller).

I wonder if the guy with the wheel setup ever improved significantly on his low 1:38s. They only barely beat that time. Considering the track hadn't been built when the game was developed, the accuracy is nothing short of stunning.

I had also voiced some concern on the Speed forum about the pit entrance, and low and behold, so are the drivers.

That's what the good guys with the wheel setups are getting on F1 2010. Here's what the guy I referred to above posted a little while ago:

OK...here's my race prediction (but really, who knows):

Webber, Hamilton, and others will suffer starting on the left (inside/dirty) side of the grid. FWIW, Kubica says the dirty side is so bad he would rather start from P11 than his P8. He says it's a 20m disadvantage.

Vettel has to try to get away as quickly and cleanly as possible to stave off an attack from Alonso, who also starts on the good side and should have a good run at Webber by T1 and may have a good shot at Vettel at T3. If Alonso can pressure Vettel early, it may be hard for him to hold him off in the long run, as the Ferrari has enjoyed better race pace than the Red Bull in most races lately, including being increasingly better than others as the race wears on over long runs. If Alonso can't get pressure on the Bulls on the straights, then he's not going to get them in the twisties.

IMHO, the balance of this track should play to the Ferrari. That's what I've seen ever since I started racing this course on F1 2010, and it's been borne out throughout P and Q. The Bulls beat out Alonso in Q, but only by the slimmest of margins. I don't think it will hold up in the race...but, in the immortal words of that fabulous Finn...

Wewillsee.

P.S. Disclaimer: If it rains, all bets are off, but then I like Fred or Lewis.

I think Alonso will get Webber on the start. However Alonso will have trouble getting past Vettel on the track. Kubica is my darkhorse for a podium finish.

While the track isn't breaking up; the bumps before the curves were worse today, so expect them to be even worse by the end of the race - could have an effect on the results. So much for not having to cure the track.

From ToroRosso's Twitter - It's raining first thing in the morning here in Mokpo and its supposed to rain for the race. That would suit us just fine.
