My favorite part of the story:

"If there was a relaxed moment of humor to be shared by both squads and coaching staffs, something to force a crack in the bustling pressure, it was provided at a big luncheon the day before the kickoff by Texas Governor Preston Smith. He not only welcomed all of the good visitors from "Illinois," he repeatedly referred to Ara as "Coach Parse-agan." Seriously.

"A bit embarrassed, Royal had leaned over to Parseghian on the dais and whispered, "He went to Texas Tech." And when Ara finally appeared before the microphone he cordially thanked "Governor Schmidt," and collapsed the room in laughter."

I remember that story. Still makes me laugh when I hear or read it!

Johnny Treadwell, Austin
upload_2023-7-4_9-2-11.png

Recruited out of Austin High School by Mike Campbell, became a standout linebacker on DKR’s early 1960s teams. He was the first in a long line of outstanding linebackers who wore #60.
Combined with Pat Culpepper to stop Arkansas’ Randy Brabham at the Texas goal line to preserve a 7-3 victory over the Razorbacks. The moment preserved in an iconic photo that will doubtless be revisited in about a month.
All-SWC, consensus AA at guard and linebacker. Two-time Academic AA. Chosen by the Houston Post as the Southwest Conference Defensive MVP in 1962. Elected to the Hall of Honor in 1985.

Favorite pic of Nobis, (#60) putting a lick on Joe Namath (#12) in the 1965 Orange Bowl. "BOOM!!" . . . stuffed! Watched that game and loved every moment of it. The Horns won and Nobis played a solid game IIRC, but Namath was named the MVP which was a surprise to my 10 year old self.

Definitely the "poop" was for the worst player to wear #60 in the last 60+ years. I unloaded on David for letting him wear it unless he was wearing #60 at a different school.

Just a few Tommy Nobis accomplishments:
  • Three-time All-Southwest Conference
  • Two-time All-American
  • Team MVP in 1964 and 1965
  • Co-captain in 1965
  • 1965 Outland Trophy Winner
  • Finished 7th in 1965 Heisman Trophy voting
  • UT’s very first number one overall selection in the NFL Draft
  • First ever draft selection by the Atlanta Falcons
  • 1966 NFL Rookie of the Year
  • Five-time NFL Pro Bowl selection
  • 1967 NFL first-team All-Pro
  • 1968 NFL second-team All-Pro
  • Georgia Hall of Fame
  • Atlanta Falcons Ring of Honor
  • Nicknamed “Mr. Falcon”
  • Number 60 jersey retired by Texas and Atlanta
  • 1981 College Football Hall of Fame inductee
  • 1976 Texas Hall of Honor inductee

But 1 GLARING omition; screw-job...is not & may never be inducted into nfl hall o fame. MAJOR screw-job; prolly 'cause the Falcons were so crappy his entire career. Not his fault he was the only good player on a s#¡+ team.

^^ posted before I posted....

With all due respect for Bobby Layne and his son Rob, Nobis brought a very high and new modern era respect for UT for CF and the NFL in the mid-60's.

For years Nobis was THE cornerstone of the crappy Atlanta franchise.

Hard to pick 4 on short notice, but UT Mount Rushmore....

Nobis, Earl, Street, VINCE..

Agree. Argue away... re: Ricky, Layne and others deserve to be there.

Hard to keep Vince out.

If I was a stud recruit, I’d want #59 and have it all to myself. Slim pickens on the World Wide Web for previous #59s.
