100 Day Countdown - 2023

MC,

You're to young to remember, but we had one who was All SWC Freshman team as an OG AND DE. Hint: Cotton Speyer NEVER beat him in a track meet.

Had to give up football because of a hand/arm injury.

I'm your Huckleberry Sabre, who was fast Frosh kid who had to give up ball due to the injury?

What a great action shot! The best Heisman pose I have seen. Would have been great if Jamaal had returned for his senior season and won the Heisman Trophy. He was a tremendous athlete. :hookem::hookem::hookem:

Ted Koy, Bellville.
upload_2023-8-9_18-0-23.jpeg

Bearing down on ND defensive back Ken Ivan during the 1970 Cotton Bowl. Koy was injured late in the game and Billy Dale, not Ted, scored the winning touchdown in a 21-17 victory.
A team captain during the 1969 season, Koy racked up 40 yards on 12 attempts and scored an early fourth-quarter touchdown. Part of a great Longhorn family.

Well here is my #23...........Ernest Koy Jr..........what an athletic family.....Ernie Sr played football and baseball at UT from 1930-1933.......several seasons in MLB who also homered in his his 1st MLB at bat for the Dodgers in 1938. Little brother Ted wasnt too shabby either.

DB #23 Danny Lester

Lester key INT vs ND Jan. 1, 1970 Cotton Bowl.
By all accounts Danny Lester was not only a great football player but an outstanding person. I remember him as one of my heroes as a young kid who was able to watch him play Baylor in Waco. Guys like him only cemented my burnt orange blood from birth.:hookem: Rest in Peace Danny, you are remembered by many.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Cotton Spreyer broke his arm vs. beatdown of ou Oct. 1970 (ou tried the wishbone for the first time).

Danny Lester played WR in place of CS the rest of the season?

Yes, very sadly his life ended far too early.

Here is an article about Bobby Layne and Doak Walker that describes their friendship and competition on the football field:

I think you are correct on that Worster. Bill Little wrote a great biography article about Danny and I am thinking that is where I heard that he played WR when Cotton got hurt.
Sabre might be able to verify that?

I'll confirm it, I saw it with my own eyes. He started the year at DB and switched to WR. He was very good at both. I was distressed that he had to move from DB but don't recall if he played both ways.
EDIT: After thinking about it, I think he did play both ways after the move to WR, at least some time at DB also.
