100 Day Countdown - 2023

All-SWC/All-American on a great 1982 defense.
He holds team records for tackles for loss in a season with 33 and his career number of 60 (tied with Jackson Jeffcoat) trails only the great Derrick Johnson. He holds the team record for career sacks with a team record of 22.5 coming in the 1982 season alone. Ken McCune, Tim Campbell, and Bill Acker are tied for second with 14.

This is what I like about this thread.
Getting reminded of incredible Horns like Kiki who still holds the record for sacks by quite a bit.:hookem2:

People, we are only a few hours away from 30 days to kickoff vs. Rice Cheer!!!

How about a few spirit builder photos:

Kiki was a speedy prototype edge position before anyone knew that term. I had the pleasure of watching him play so many great games.

Good post and great player; however, I think Upper Deck printed the wrong photo. The second image says Steve Worster, but I’m pretty sure the player shown is Jim Bertlesen.

I think you are right. Could not see the jersey but it looks like Bertelsen. Deleted. Thanks.

Joe Paterno visited DKR about installing the Wishbone; DKR's response was, "Coach, you don't want my offense, you want my fullback".

I have never been accused of being a fan of OA Phillips, nor has anyone ever accused him of being a fan of The University of Texas, but I shall always have deep appreciation for his words of advice that caused Woo to choose Texas.

Woo & Mac destroyed perhaps the best HS team that your town ever produced and quarterbacked by Eddie Phillips. Game was at Floyd Casey if I remember correctly.

Eddie was QB for Mesquite HS IIRC.

Your right Sabre, Bridge City soundly beat a really good McKinney team for the 3A state championship in 1966.

McKinney finally won their first and only state championship in 1979.

56 3A was played in Nederland in a driving rain storm. Coach Bill Ellington's Owls beat Nederland 3-0 inspite of Nederland having the ball inside Garland's 20 4 or 5 times. Nederland had a really good kicker but OA Phillips never tried the FG. That's the closest Bum ever came to winning a championship at any level.

Somebody can check this, but I believe Nederland's starting LB and team captain was a fellow named Leon Fuller. Leon may have been a senior the year before, when Viper knows very well who won the 3A championship on what Coach Ellington called the greatest run in Texas HS history.

64 Championship was played at Rice Stadium and included the most controversial play in Texas HS history.

WM, ask Sabre who won the 56 3A championship and the 64 4A championship

Before I saw Sabres post I would have guessed and suspected Garland. I remember their title in 1964. My Dad plugged me into Texas HS football at about 8 years old.

No recollection of 1956, I was 3 years old and living out of Texas. Garland had several good teams in the early 60's.

Herkie Walls from Garland was a big get back in the early 80's.

Worster,

For me there is no argument. You either agree that Leon is the best ever, or you are WRONG!

He had it tough as a kid. Too small to play, but he was a star.

Parents passed while he was in HS, and a family in Nederland took him in.

Bum got him a juco scholarship, then talked Bear Bryant into taking him at Alabama, where I believe he was team captain.
