Shown here along with (my guess is) Chris Duliban taking down Roger Vick in an entirely forgettable game in Collie Station, 1985.

Shown here behind Head Coach D.X. Bible. Standing in the back are l-r Lewis Mayne, George Watkins, Jack Crain, and Noble Doss.
The team was the first in Longhorn history to achieve a #1 ranking in the AP poll. Four members were selected all-conference and All-American (“Cowboy” Jack Crain, Chal Daniel, Malcom Kunter, Pete Layden) and two others who would claim AA status the following year (Stan Mauldin and Roy McKay). The team was featured on the cover of Life Magazine.
The team breezed through its first six games outscoring the opposition 230-25 before inexplicably being tied by lowly Baylor on a late touchdown and outright losing to TCU 14-7 the following week. They rebounded with a 23-0 victory over conference champion A&M then absolutely crushed Oregon 71-7 the day before the Pearl Harbor attack.
They finished with a final #4 ranking.

Look at those young innocent faces in the Fall of 1941, unaware that on December 7 of that year their world (and that of all of America) would change dramatically. I wonder how many of the young men on that team served in the war and how many were wounded and/or killed in action. All honor to those who served in the war (and all wars).

Not sure about the service records of the team members (apart from Stan Maudlin) but Lt. Chal Daniel was the first of this group to be killed when, during a training flight his PT-17 crashed about five miles northwest of New Braunfels.
Where’s Larry Carlson when you need him?

Three car loads left Austin on December 8, 1941. Drove to Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio to enlist. The day after the beat down of Oregon. The University granted degrees to the seniors at mid year.

Thanks for the reply.

a young Tom Landry left after 1 semester and flew 30 combat missions, his brother Robert was killed while ferrying a B-17 to England when it crashed near Iceland.

everyone knows these stories of our boys going to fight in the war is BS. Only Aggies actually fought and died for our country. Our boys were serving ice cream in the mess hall stateside and never even went to Europe. Or they ran away as a soon as they landed in Omaha beach!

I’m joking of course and am forever grateful to ALL those who served in any capacity and fought for our freedoms that we enjoy today!!!

#39 DE Brian Robison - one of my fav photos - putting the boom on Bomar!!! Thus coining the term: "BOMARED".

Robison was a BEAST and went on to many seasons starting for the Vikings. Now back and frequently a guest commentator on LHN.

Coming off the bench to nail the winning kick vs. Nebraska on a windy day in 2006.
Finished his career 25-30 on field goal attempts which is good for second all-time in team history (83.3%), tied w Justin Tucker. Hit 5 field goals vs. UCF in 2007. His string of 60 consecutive extra points made is ranked fifth on the teams all time list. HM All-B12 in 2007. Three-time Academic All-B12.

I remember watching this game at the ESPN bar in NY while my wife was shopping or doing something financially draining. What a game. Cosby almost returning the opening kickoff for a TD. Somehow losing the lead in the 4th quarter. The fumble caused by Aaron Ross on the catch that would have iced the game for Nebraska. Then the final drive with the FG in the snow. Unreal!

1977 Team Captain.
Shown here trying to corral A&M’s David Walker on Thanksgiving, 1976. The Horns came up way short that night (27-3) but better things were on the horizon, starting with the following game.
It was DKR’s last defeat as a coach.

I was at that cold, wet, miserable game sitting in the north end zone and as I recall, though the final score was 27-3, the game wasn’t that close. I was a high school senior and on the bright side, I got to see, in person, DKR coach a game. The next year was a much better year, going 11-0 in the regular season and a Heisman for Earl.

With regard to Morgan Copeland, I went to the split-off high school from Westchester, Stratford, and I have met him professionally since his playing days and he is a very nice person.

^^^ El arroyo - yeah, my UT grad Dad took our family to that aggy game 1976. We had never attended an aggy game on T-Day as a family before.

We sat on the very LAST row of the upper deck in the middle. I will always remember how absolutely miserable the weather conditions were that day and how fricken' high up those seats were from the field!!!

To top it off, the Horns got beat soundly.
