WORLD CUP 2010 (TV Schedules and brackets also)

SPOILER!

Serbia 1, Germany 0--38th minute.

The Spanish referee has taken over this match. He just issued German striker Miroslav Klose a second yellow, reducing the Huns to 10 men. That's six yellows issued from 12 fouls.

Serbia wastes no time in capitalizing, going up a goal on the strength of a lovely side kick from Milan Jovanovic. Brilliant football; atrocious refereeing.

SPOILER!

Serbia 1, Germany 0--Halftime.

Incredible finish to that opening frame. The Germans deserved a score there, as Sami Khedira found a rebound at his feet and blasted it past Serbia's keeper, only to find the woodwork.

The subsequent rebound was bicycled on target, but a Serbian defending the near post managed to save and clear.

Amazing game. Just imagine how much better it would be if the Spanish referee hadn't made it about him.

SPOILER!

Serbia 1, Germany 0--59th minute.

Crazy soccer! German striker Lukas Podolski rushes two superb chances but then gets a shot at redemption after Serbia's Nemanja Vidic needlessly handles a long ball in the box. Podolski's ground shot targets the right post, but Serbian keeper Vladimir Stojkovic anticipates and makes the stop.

Unbelievable!

Does Podolski have money on the Serbs in this match??? What the heck is he doing out there.

SPOILER!

Serbia 1, Germany 0--Final.

Riveting match. Ten-man Germany deserved better, but Podolski just couldn't find the mark.

Let's hope that Spanish referee has officiated his last Cup contest. What a travesty.

SPOILER!

United States 2, Slovenia 2--Final.

The Yanks' second-straight draw puts them in an odd position. On one hand, their backs are against the wall as a loss or draw in the third and final group-play match against Algeria eliminates them. On the other, they control their own fate as a win with a two-goal-or-better margin guarantees advancement.

The draw maintains CONCACAF's .500 record so far this tournament. Through five games, the region is 1-1-3 (wins-losses-draws) with Honduras yet to decide its second match of group play. With an angry Spain looming, one has to expect the Catrachos to be saddled with another loss.

SPOILER!

Another match is in the books: England 0, Algeria 0.

Through the first two rounds of play, Group C looks thusly:

Team ---------------- W/L/T ----- GS -- GA -- GD ---- PTS
Slovenia ____________ 1 0 1 ______ 3 ___ 2 ___ +1 _____ 4
United States ________ 0 0 2 ______ 3 ___ 3 ____ 0 _____ 2
England _____________ 0 0 2 ______ 1 ___ 1 ____ 0 _____ 2
Algeria ______________ 0 1 1 ______ 0 ___ 1 ___ -1 _____ 1

The group returns to action Wednesday. The U.S. will take on Algeria at 9 a.m. Central at Loftus Versfeld Stadium while England and Slovenia simultaneously kick off at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

NOTE: I posted this in another thread but thought it bore repeating here.England's surprise draw with Algeria has opened up some additional routes of advancement for the U.S.

Here's how it breaks down for the Yanks going into Wednesday's matches, the final round of group play:

U.S.-Algeria tie

Eliminated if England beats Slovenia.
Advance if Slovenia beats England.
Advance if Slovenia and England tie and
the U.S. scores more total goals than England.
Else, eliminated.

U.S. beats Algeria

Advance regardless of the England-Slovenia outcome.

Algeria beats U.S.

Eliminated regardless of the England-Slovenia outcome.

SPOILER!

Holland 0, Japan 0--Halftime.

Snooze-inducing first frame from these two sides. Wonder if Elia can spark the Dutch against Japan just as he did a few days ago.

Good morning Gem, someone is asleep at the switch down here and ESPN isnt blacked out so I am watching this snoozer on the WWLD. It is surprising how much better the coverage is this time. Yes it is pro US but you guys should hear the English announcers we get down here they are overtly and blatantly pro-England.

Props to ESPN for going all out on this World Cup.

SPOILER!

Holland 1, Japan 0--55th minute.

Blistering shot from Wesley Sneijder from about 24 meters out starts for near post but takes a nasty bend to the right, causing the keeper to overplay its flight and ultimately deflect it to near post.

The Dutch have definitely been the highest quality European squad so far after disappointing results for Spain, Germany and England. Japan just need to beat Denmark and they should still get through.

The South Americans seem to have a stranglehold on the tournament so far but who knows what will happen in the elimination rounds.

Big question is if all five Conmebol teams (and right now you have to think all 5 will advance) and 2 concacaf (Mexico and USA) plus two or maybe three from African and Asian squads advance; could we see as few as six European teams in the round of 16, now that would be a shock.

SPOILER!

Holland 1, Japan 0--Final.

Holland prevails in a match that looked more like a first-round effort than the second game in group play. I suppose the Dutch deserved the win, but they were far from impressive and had to withstand a late surge from the Japanese in order to realize the full three points.

The Dutch commentator, as you likely saw too, was down on the sides performance while the Wiggan coach said he liked what he saw. He said the Dutch were sticking in 1st gear because they have not needed to. They did not want to create space for the Japanese to counter or create. I think I recall that correctly.

The interviews with the British fans were classic. Some feel they are owed more for traveling so far, etc. That one dude who said he is ready to boo again cracked me up. They are pissed by what they think is a wonky performance thus far.

The French, German and Spanish media/fans must be going the hell off. There will not be lots of babies born 9 months from this week!

Yeah, those English fans ... and media ...

Is it any wonder why the Three Lions historically underperform in the Cup? It seems nothing short of winning the Cup would ever be enough to satisfy their fans and critics, and that's a very heavy burden to carry.

Did I read the ticker right, Beck's got booed by a fan or something? Then it said England was filing a complaint with FIFA. Is it for that or did I read wrong and it's something else? Beckham has thick skin so I doubt that some jackhole boo'ing him would affect him. Maybe I should rest?

Going on 3 or so hours last two days. Things to do. Doing none of it.

SPOILER!

Australia 1, Ghana 0--11th minute.

Ghana's Richard Kingson makes a mess of a routine free kick from Mark Bresciano and spills the rebound to an onrushing Brett Holman, who uses his left instep to put the ball back near far post.

Apparently an angry England fan got through security and confronted Beckham in the locker room or just outside it. Wow

SPOILER!

Australia 1, Ghana 1--26th minute.

Asamoah Gyan levels Ghana with a well-taken penalty kick to right post. Worse for the Socceroos, Harry Kewell has been sent off for a handball on the line that denied Jonathan Mensah's shot.

For the second-consecutive game, Australia is forced to play a man down. Odd that, in both cases, the man being sent off was a veteran star.

The penalty was deserved, as Kewell was reckless to have his arms elevated. The straight red, however, seemed harsh. Was that the referee's only option there?

Ruud Van Nistleroy agrees with you. Beck's is top notch and a class act. The BS he dealt with from "fans" and media to include kidnapping attempts of his children is remarkable. He was classy and always performed to the best he could. He comes across to me as humble.

The WC is costing me sleep but it's worth it. Offseason my butt.

Halfways watching AUS-GHA. Kept thinking the announcer was saying "Suckaroos." Got another cup of coffee and realized it was "Socceroos."
smile.gif

That penalty on Aussie brings back some dark memories of '02 same type of play and same fricking call is not made in USA-Germany and no chance for PK to tie the quarter final match.

Pretty sure of you stop a goal with a handball it is always a straight red.

SPOILER!

Australia 1, Ghana 1--Halftime.

Better-than-average match so far. Gotta pity the Aussies a bit for having to first play Germany and now Ghana with only 10 men.

SPOILER!

Australia 1, Ghana 1--Final.

Heroic effort from 10-man Australia, which deserved the point but won't be happy with it. Ghana enjoyed a bevy of chances (24 shots and 6 corners to Australia's 9 and 1, respectively) but too often settled for speculative, long-range efforts.
