WORLD CUP 2010 (TV Schedules and brackets also)

SPOILER!

Argentina 3, South Korea 1--76th minute.

Higuain taps in a rebound to get the goal and the brace, but all credit goes to Lionel Messi for an inspired run into the left-half of the box and his subsequent two shots that the keeper did well to push aside.

SPOILER!

Argentina 4, South Korea 1--80th minute.

It's a hat trick for Argentina's Gonzalo Higuain, who heads down a precise lob from Sergio Aguero toward the far post. Beautiful soccer from the Albiceleste today.

Higuain goes off for Mario Bolatti. Per the announcer, Higuain's hat trick is the Cup's first since 2002 and Argentina's first since Batistuta in 1998.

SPOILER!

Argentina 4, South Korea 1--Final.

This margin--a bit unkind to the South Koreans--should advance the Argentines into the knockout round. Though outplayed, the Koreans played hard and probably deserved a second goal.

SPOILER!

Nigeria 1, Greece 0--16th minute.

Total howler of an opening goal for Nigeria as Uche's soft free kick fails to find a head--or a clearance--and bounds into the 6-meter area and then into the goal. As a result, the Greeks are poised to crash out of this competition.

Technically, that will count as World Cup 2010's first free kick for goal, but it shouldn't as it was more the result of Alexandros Tzorvas' inept netminding.

SPOILER!

Nigeria 1, Greece 0--33rd minute.

Madness for Nigeria's Sani Kaita, who loses his cool after being provoked by Vasilis Torosidis and flails half-heartedly with his boot. There wasn't much contact, if any, but Kaita is nevertheless given a straight red and Nigeria is forced to defend its one-goal lead with only 10 men.

Given new life, can the Greeks come through with an equalizer?

SPOILER!

Nigeria 1, Greece 1--44th minute.

Greece nets the equalizer courtesy of a deflection off Lukman Haruna. Credit for the score goes to Dimitrios Salpingidis. The goal came after several minutes of intense, relentless pressure on Nigeria's goal.

SPOILER!

Greece 2, Nigeria 1--71st minute.

The potential game-winning goal came after Vincent Enyeama, who has been nothing short of spectacular this tournament, spilled a hard shot from Alexandros Tziolis. Vasilis Torosidis ran on to the rebound and easily slots it home.

Enyeama has been fantastic but should've done better there.

Terrific match. Who knew this one would be so exciting?

Best day so far from a purely watching standpoint. Argentina got it going. Now this one. Fun times (at work!). And still what should be another good one later -- MX v. France has the potential to be wonderful.

Heroic effort by the Nigerian goalie. That guy is playing like an All-Pro safety or corner. Still not going to be enough or so it seems.

ps -- Here's an article about the North Korean "fans"

SPOILER!

Greece 2, Nigeria 1--Final.

First two scores in Greece's limited World Cup history result in its first win.

Goat of the match--and perhaps the tournament--has to be Sani Kaita, whose sending off in the 33rd minute utterly changed the direction of the game. Up to that point, Nigeria was firmly in control as Greece had shown no sign of life. After the red, however, the Greeks ran the show and the equalizer was only a matter of time.

Credit the Greeks for having a killer's instinct. Once they went up a man, they never backed off.

In case you missed it, Swiss coach said he modeled his game plain for Spain based on US victory over them in the Confederations Cup.

Meanwhile, I am hoping for a good game plan for Slovenia. It looks like a must win match for the US. A Slovenian win and they are in control of the group. A draw leaves much to chance.

My guess is that Bradley will stick with same line-up. One change he might consider is starting Buddle and keeping the speedy Finley back for late sub. I like Torres but he doesnt seem to have caught the coach's eye.

Mexico and France are underway in what is a must-result match for El Tri. Lose, and the Mexicans can count on a short stay in South Africa.

Can Mexico break with tradition and actually finish its chances?

SPOILER!

France 0, Mexico 0--38th minute.

The French have had several set pieces already. Sooner or later, you figure one of them will go for goal.

C'mon Mexico!!! Win this one, okay?

I like France quite a bit but when not playing us or affecting us, I root for the Tri. So does Arizona.

SPOILER!

France 0, Mexico 0--Halftime.

Entertaining half in spite of the score. The two sides couldn't have more disparate styles--the French have advanced the ball deliberately, methodically, generally building up until they win a free kick or corner.

Meanwhile, the Mexicans seem content to hang back until France has surrendered possession, then they sprint into action, attacking the French backline with reckless abandon.

So far, El Tri has enjoyed the better chances.

SPOILER!

Mexico 1, France 0--64th minute.

The deadlock is broken! El Tri gets on the board courtesy of a 50/50 offside call that sees Javi Hernandez beat the keeper one-on-one. Not even a Tricolor could waste that chance!

Espoiler!!!

Si, Si, Si!!! Gol para los Tri Colores!!!

Que Bueno! Que lastinma! Que-so!!!

2 - 0 Mexico over Francais.

YESH!!!

SPOILER!

Mexico 2, France 0--79th minute.

Penal, penal, penal! Cuau puts El Tri up by two with a penalty kick awarded after Eric Abidal pulls Pablo Barrera down inside the 18-meter box.

SPOILER!

Mexico 2, France 0--Final.

El Tri have done it! Barring an utter collapse versus Uruguay, the victory all but ensures the Mexicans go through.

The result also gives CONCACAF its first win of the tournament. The organization is now 1-1-2 with the U.S. set to take the pitch next--at 8:30 Central tomorrow morning versus Slovenia.

EDIT: Corrected the start time of the U.S.-Slovenia match.

With that fancy Spanish you speak, I might get evrio, but me voy a poner bien pedo tonight

Biggest win for Mexico in a world cup.

As expected, scoring has jumped so far for the second round of group-play matches.

The first round of group play netted a mere 25 goals in 16 matches--an average of 1.56 goals per contest.

The second round of group play has netted 13 goals in four matches--an average of 3.25 goals per contest.

That's more than twice the clip we witnessed in the first round. Will it hold? Sure hope so.

SPOILER!

Germany 0, Serbia 0--19th minute.

Two cautions issued already this match, and both of them unwarranted.

Just as I type this message, a third yellow is handed out. Not sure what match this referee is watching.

This official is terrible, and Serbia now have a goal and a 1 man advantage with 10 minutes to go in first half, bad news for Germany who still have a decent Ghana to go.
