West Virginia Series --- SWEEP!

Re: importance of the 9th and 8th best hitters (the worst two in the lineup), Pete Rose said that was the key to the success of the Big Red Machine. Even the worst batters were at least ok. That’s the chain with no weak links. And that sort of philosophy gets a lot of men on base and scores a lot of runs.

The pitcher was 9th. Cesar Geronimo was .257, .327 OBP, 6 HRs. 148 games played. That’s one of the iconic teams in MLB history.

Our worst 2 are likely more productive than those 2 for the 1975 Big Red Machine.

We just hit the ball harder than our opponents. By a considerable amount. The last two years, at least. And warmer weather means more big flies.

I do give Pierce credit for that.

Just caught up on tape delay. I’m loving this offensive performance and our Homerun derby. Also, congrats to DC for another game to his hitting streak.

Now if LBJ can just get us out of the 3rd with minimal damage…

1970s National League. When your worst batter (not counting pitchers) is in the high .250s, you’ve got a solid lineup.

The LHN puts on some boring junk at times, but they did one last week where they showed the weight training for the baseball players. It didn’t look too different from what you’d see from the football players. (Not as much weight of course). They’re hitting the weights pretty hard.

Chop,

FYI, in MLB, the difference in a 300+ hitter and a 250 hitter is one hit per week. That's why GMs look at quality & power of hits.

That’s old school. Moneyball says otherwise. OB %. Get on base. Get on base. Get on base. OPS factors in power with OB%, so yes, power is a part of it too.

I agree. It was a legendary team. I didn’t see Geronimo OPS but it was probably in your “below average” category.

And I don’t believe the 9 hole hitter was worth a damn, which was part of the original note. Yes, I know it was a pitcher hitting there, which is part of the reason it caught my attention.

College is a little different but 8/9 hole are sketchy more often than not.
