West Virginia Series --- SWEEP!

Chop
Reading these reports makes me nervous
But thank you for them

Nothing to be nervous about this eve bro.

Remember where they come from: Morganhole WV. Was there once on biz 35 years ago. It was a dump then, probably still a dump. Town has a lot of bars, but is NOT a college town IMHO.

Neers are serious college baseball newbies. They might be a little intimidated coming to DFF, vs. a college baseball blue-blood program, seeing billboard in outfield: 6 NC's over many decades, engaged and loud home crowd, etc.

Plus Horns appeared focused and came determined to WIN.

Brown was MVP tonight!!.

:headbang:

I know we had a big lead and so maybe we did not break out our best relievers, but Gordon went 7 complete on ~95 pitches. Lummus and Grubbs needed just under 60 pitches just to get thru 2 innings.

Very nice start to the weekend. LBJ tomorrow with Morehouse completely rested and available for a couple of innings as needed is a huge plus. :hookem:

Feeling very good about LBJ pitching Friday. He will be one of the best 'neers have faced this season.

Dang, I didn't even know they played tonight....:confused2: I missed the entire game, I think this is the first one this season that I've missed. Glad they won, sounds like Gordon was on tonight. We need to sweep these guys and surely OU will win at least one game.

I don't remember seeing any of the pitchers listed in Chop's pre-game analysis tonight--that's not good. I guess since Texas got such a big early lead and WVU wasn't doing much against Gordon they didn't use their best relievers. I hope LBJ keeps up his good work tomorrow night. Very fun game tonight. Porter Brown's parents sit a couple of rows behind me and they were getting all kinds of love tonight!

Watched this one on tape delay. Wow, what a performance!

Lucas "Geno" Gordon on the mound :clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:
Porter Brown - 3 HOMERUNS!!!!!!:cheernana::cheernana::cheernana:

Dylan Campbell - 31 game winning streak, HOMERUN!!! :yippee::yippee:

Entire batting lineup :clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

WV didn't pitch either one of their top 2 starting pitchers tonight. Whomever they put on the mound tomorrow, they'll have to face LBJ.

WV must think it's deer season down here... those uniforms...

This one win knocked us back up to #26 in the RPI (the only poll that counts for anything). Win this series, we'll be Top 25 without a doubt. Sweep them, and we're top 20 (and looking at a possible Top 16/Regional seed if we win a couple of Big 12 tournament games). For now, we're still a solid 2 seed.

We'll probably see their top 2 starters--tomorrow and Saturday. They're still a good team, and there's still a lot of baseball to be played. 2 out of 3 would be good. A sweep of these guys would be fantastic. I think the announcers said we might be facing the side-armer tomorrow (Friday).

Would be nice to topple another big XII record before our exit, only 5 more games will do it. (crossing my fingers) as it stands now, he's (Campbell) in sole possession of 2nd place. :hookem:

Carlson is hitting over .300

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Thomas is on an extended hitting streak too, low 20's and isn't anything to sneeze at but is currently being overshadowed by Campbell's streak. I'm not sure exactly where he's at but he's within a few games of being on the all time list with Campbell. :hookem:

The emergence of Thomas and Carlson has been huge. Thomas was batting last; now he's batting first. Jack is still batting about average, and has been all year (he's certainly consistent). So we're pretty close to becoming a chain with no weak links. The one remaining puzzle piece in our batting lineup is SS. Daly or Flores or J. DuPlantier--someone needs to step it up at the plate. Based on batting alone (something coaches normally don't do for the SS position), J. DuPlantier should be our everyday SS.* Other than that, we've got 8 batters every day in the lineup who are a challenge to get out. We put a lot of men on base.

*I think that beginning-of-the-year Arlington tournament still sticks in the back of Coach's mind, and he's hesitant to put J. DuP out there in the field at SS much. But other than that tournament, I don't recall J. DuP fumbling around and making errors all over the place this year. He doesn't have Daly's glove (yet), but he doesn't suck in the field for all time based on one lousy pre-conference tournament.

And Flores is the long-term development guy, whom the experts project will be a superstar. Next year, Flores may do like Thomas did this year, and steadily develop into one of our better hitters. Flores could be either SS or 3rd Base.

We won’t be able to put Dup at ss now, too late but I do expect Dup to get critical PH at bats in place of whoever is hitting 9th. Dup is a baller and deserves the shot to help his team win, that 9 hole hitter is an auto out that we just can’t afford going forward.

fan,

Are you old enough to remember in the 80s when our leading hitter and #1 RBI leader hit in the 9 spot? Wish I could remember Gus' response when asked why he left him at #9 rather than moving him to 2 or 3. He responded with a polite interpretation of, "Dumbass, if it ain't broke don't fix it", or "that's why I coach the top program in the nation and you work for fishwrap that no one reads"

I’m certainly old enough but don’t particularly remember that instance among several others of similar instances. I don’t disagree with his stance on it though, some of it is the coach having a deeper knowledge of his players than us as fans have and knowing what he has and uses to win. Key is winning with your stance.

9 hole hitters generally suck. You won’t win or lose long term based on their efforts. Even if you rely on the hopes of a 9 hole guy to win a single game, you’re doing it wrong.

Powell and EK sucked versus OU. PB sucked versus KU. Like maybe 1 for 36 or something like that. That’s how you struggle.

As a side note, Faltine was the 4th worst hitter in Big 12 play last year at .205. Struck out half the time.

My key word or phrase was helping the team win not necessarily losing the game for us, there is a difference. One or two more runs because the 9 hole knocks in two runners on 2nd and 3rd instead of striking out OR extending an inning into the top of a very dangerous lineup is beyond huge and can even have secondary positives like increasing a starting pitchers pitch count.
Pierce has already PH for struggling hitters, I expect he will continue that at critical points in future games.

It sounds like you’re advocating for Flores or Daly to get their at bats blindly with no accountability whatsoever. Faltine hit double digit home runs last year right?? Surely you’re not comparing Daly and Flores to Faltine as being in his league?

*update: Faltine hit 15 home runs last year, if Daly or Flores were on track to hit 15, I wouldn't be advocating for a PH for either player. Between the two of them they still don't have half as many HR's as Faltine.

you also mention EK’s short struggles, Daly and Flores have struggled the entire season, not even close to the same.

Right. Faltine brought a lot of power to the plate. And he was a real star in the field.

Re: importance of the 9th and 8th best hitters (the worst two in the lineup), Pete Rose said that was the key to the success of the Big Red Machine. Even the worst batters were at least ok. That’s the chain with no weak links. And that sort of philosophy gets a lot of men on base and scores a lot of runs.

With respect to the SS position, I’m advocating making smart decisions. Not giving Daly a rest when struggling and possibly complicating things by moving him around the lineup didn’t help.
Playing all the games then none of the games is a poor choice. It shouldn’t have been all or nothing. It still shouldn’t.

Who knows what DuPlantier is doing in practice but he’s a utility guy and our 1st off the bench pinch runner. He’s showed no power and Pierce likes power. This late in the season it is a risk to play. He is not fully practicing at SS I’d assume.

As I’ve mentioned Dalys non conference numbers are decent. His season OPS is ok for a 9 hole hitter.

Yes, a key hit here or there would be nice. He’s had several. Flores has had a few. More would be better.

I’m not really comparing Faltine to these guys. But he was not good offensively in the conference. He was not as bad as Daly in conference, but they both were better in non-conference.

Our team goes as EK, Powell and our hitters go. That’s my point. You hope for gravy from the bottom 3rd but the top must be the entree.
