Not this season!Peyton has not had too good of a NCAA start. That could change........
The thing that worries me is the ball pressure and quick hands of Jefferson. We know they are going to score on offense, so we have to be able to put points on the board. The only thing as a fan that I hope they'll do is play with confidence and don't play scared, and more than anything compete.don't panic on offense, play D-don't leave 3pt shooters open, take care of the ball. I like our chances. We may not win, but we got a chance. That's all we can ask for. We have faced a lot of pressure from the press this season and have gotten a lot better at handling it. The thing will to not force the ball inside when that is not open. When it is, they got to get it in there. I think UConn will have trouble with Kelsey and Imani if we make good reads in getting the ball inside.
Gotta admit that UConn is simply superb running their offense. That stands out. Can't wait to see how Texas stacks up.
Totally agree, great job breaking it down. A lot of the players on the roster did compete aganist them in aau. And playing Kelsey and Imani together is very important, also great point about playing a 3-2 zone.To be honest, the first thing they have to do is "BELIEVE" these girls have played against the kids from Uconn on the AAU circut for years. You have to know that you're just as good as they are. I think we have to really use Kelsey and Imani together effectively together to have a shot. I honestly think the game plan that we impored against Cal gives us the best shot to win, and maybe even using a 3-2 zone more than we normally do (what was really effective for the cardinal in their win). Know where KML is at ALL times, and keep Jefferson and Stewart & co out of the paint. Limit turnovers, and no transition baskets. While the realist in me realizes how hard it would be to win, its not impossible and I absolutely expect us to compete.
I missed the Uconn game last night, can some shed light on how stewie (Brianna Stewart) only had 8 points and played 20 minutes? Was she not meeting Geno's expectations, or was it something Rutgers was specifically doing?
Kudos to Texas women’s coach Karen Aston for keeping her team engaged despite the loss of Nneka Enemkpali, UT’s best player, in the middle of the season. The Longhorns are still dancing after going to Berkeley to eliminate Western Kentucky and host Cal.
Aston is getting the most out of post Imani Stafford-McGee, along with a giant contribution from her tiniest player, freshman point Brooke McCarty. Texas’ reward is a trip to Albany, N.Y., where the Horns will face UConn, a No. 1 seed. Even if they go out and lose to a title favorite, Aston and Co. are heading north in their development as a program. Nice job.
Nobody thought Baylor and Griner could be stopped and look what Louisville did a couple of years ago. You never know...
Regardless, we are in the Sweet 16. Huge step forward for this program. Huge.
And now for some more Mulkey fun...
Lets just be careful how much we slow the game down. Because we struggle more than anything with half court sets. We need to run in spots as well. I'd think 30-40% of our offensive possessions need to be spent pushing the ball. Helps with Two things 1. easy buckets 2. making sure that Uconn isn't able to set their defense against Imani and Kelsey allowing them to get lots of 1-1 looks. It's actually pretty liberating knowing that every fan, coach and pundit in the country---including most of us on this website--- think that Connecticut will probably win big. We've got nothing to lose, and let's hope our team feels that as well. If we can keep it within 10-15, people will be impressed. If they beat us by 30, well... they beat everybody else that badly, too. Connecticut's personnel are just on another level offensively. There are at least three potential all Americans on that team. I know, I know, "on any given night..." If the Huskies are off and several U.T. players have career games, lightning might strike; just don't bet your mortgage on it. If we beat Connecticut, it would rank as an even more super-colossal-titanic-all-time-upset than Louisville over Baylor. Others have made good recommendations on strategy (zone defense, limit turnovers, etc). Let me suggest one more: slow the game down as much as possible. Yes, we are a running team, better in transition, weaker in the half court offense, etc etc etc But believe me, we do not want to run all night with UConn. That will only multiply our turnovers and raise their quantity of open shots. We don't have the firepower to trade baskets with them. Slow it down and try to keep it close. We want them to take as few shots as possible. The lower the score the better we look. I do think there is a chance that Imani could have a big game, if she's fired up and stays out of foul trouble. That would be fun, even if we lose. I would like to see her impress people on a national stage.
