Welcome to Texas, Vic Schaefer

That whole “Jody told me go get Vic” line seems very fishy...we will not know what all went down, but I don’t like how this was handled...”Integrity” and “Class” were Karen’s middle names, it sure is NOT CDC’s...
There is so much about how this was handled you must not be privy too. Alot has gone on that led up to a contract not being renegotiated...Good luck Karen...Slam Dunk Vic...Hook Em

Well seeing as how CDC said that Jody and CP recommended Vic and Vic said in multiple interviews that it was very important that they were on board before he accepted tells me that it probably went down as reported. Surely both ladies would have seen the media reports and corrected the record, Jody especially.

Vic is also a class act, I couldn’t imagine a scenario where he’d negotiate/interview for a job that was still open. But all accounts negotiations didn’t begin in Ernest until KA was informed on Friday.

I knew some media folks out there would try to bring up gender as an issue. I've always just wanted the best candidate to be hired for any of our sports programs.

Honestly, I always felt that Chris Plonsky used reverse gender discrimination when making coaching hires for Texas. Other than Jerritt Eilliott (who I still don't know for sure if she or Jody hired him), it never seemed like Plonsky even gave male head coaching candidates a sniff. I know we don't always get all the "facts" when it comes to coaching searches, and who is being vetted or interviewed, but during our previous two women's hoops head coaching searches, I don't recall reading about a single male coach who was under consideration by Plonsky. When Gail was hired, I recall hearing about Charlie Thorne (female) from Arizona State, and that might have been hit. I read zero names (male or females) the time Aston was hired.

Female head coaches which Plonsky hired include: Goestenkors, Angela Kelly, Carol Capitani, Aston, the tennis coach from Yale. Unfortunately, they have not had the required success (although Capitani and Aston had some very good seasons).

Male head coaches she hired include: rowing coach Dave O'Neil from Cal, Howard Joffe from A&M tennis, and Ryan Murphy for women's golf (internal hire from men's golf staff). They've all proven to be incredible hires. All were hired within the last 5 years or so.

In two years, CDC has hired 2 male head coaches to lead women's sports programs here. And, one male head coach to lead the combined T&F program.

While Vic is obviously male, all 3 of his current assistant coaches are female. So, we know he doesn't discriminate against women.

Yes, long-winded post just to say hiring decisions are always going to cause debate, regardless of which issues take the forefront.
Moooooo, actually, there were 3 women HC's in Tennis (Fendick-McCain for 9 years; Klaic for 2 months; and Lund for 1 season) before the male hire in 2015. In each of Fendick-McCain's 9 seasons as HC, her teams went to at least the second round of the NCAA tournament so I would not put her in the "failure" class). Klaic was a housekeeper coach, and Lund's one season finished with a 10-11 record (really not long enough to judge).

It was obvious that Aston's time had ended as evidenced by the dwindling success. Kelly is the real head-scratcher because CdC extended her. She should had been let go two of her contracts ago.

I didnt know he was from Austin but he had everything at Miss St. Well that makes the move closer to College Station once Blair is out.

Lol. Yeah, sure, he's using Texas as a temporary stop before going to A&M....

AM would never be able to pay him a good salary.
He will be at Texas for the rest of his career.
Trust and Obey.

Looks like Burnt Orange Nation (BON) has picked up a dedicated (?) writer for WBB, a first. BON is a heavy UT football/MBB/Baseball site. So to have a writer, who was fired from his local paper in MS, come over and cover WBB should be fun. Because +1 is better than 0 coverage.
Praise the Lord and Hook ‘Em Horns: Vic Schaefer brings fight, finish, and fans to Texas basketball
Well he set a hell of a bar at the end of the column talking about a potential #1 finish NEXT YEAR!! I will temper my expectations and say let’s just come in a competitive second. If we can do that, that’s a hell of a first year. Keep the BU margin of victory to 10 or less and beat everyone else

Wonderful podcast interview. After Schaefer left the call, they discussed that he is just "a storyteller" and one you wanted to sit down with for a beer. Hunting and fishing and recruiting stories....nothing better. That's a good assessment of Schaeffer. His description of McGowen's mom was good too. I can envision watching and listening to him in the living room with a player and parents and thinking "how does anyone tell him no"? Personality plus. As they talked about, can't wait till Schaeffer and Mulkey and Blair go heads up for top recruits.

In an AAS article tonight the title was...We ain’t standing around in a 2-3 zone. Attributed to Vic. So not surprising as we all know he loves pressure man defense. Guess for all of us that likes a zone to change things up .....we better wait for the next coach. I couldn’t see the article as I don’t subscribe. But can guess that the players are on notice that if they want minutes they better work on defense.

Vic's man-to-man defense does a much better job of helping the helper.

Which was our main problem with our man to man defense. We also didn't put enough pressure on the passer which caused them to be able to make easy passes. With vic's defense he wants players all in the passers face so they won't be able to make the easy pass even if it is open.

There may not be a Staff page on the Texas WBB website but they have added Vic to the 2019-2020 roster page but that is misleading to anyone who doesn’t know Texas WBB (that excludes most posters on this site ;)).

You guys got a great coach. He made MSST into an elite WBB team, hopefully he restores Texas to elite status, We will miss Vic but he left us with a foundation which hopefully we can continue to build upon. Thanks, Vic, we will miss you.

Thanks for the well wishes... and you're getting a good and very capable replacement. If McCray can continue recruiting well in the years to come, I see long-term success in the Mississippi State WBB program.

I don’t particularly appreciate Landers as a TV announcer. However, I liked what he said in this interview. He was a tremendous coach at Georgia. He comes across better when he is the sole talker. So he did a great job helping me understand what Schaefer likes and needs. Especially when he says he sees Texas challenging Baylor this next year. Exciting.

This is a bit of a no-brainer but certainly glad Vic is introducing himself to a large audience of Texas coaches by getting himself added. Other coaches including Walz, Thorne, Coale, Pebley were already scheduled.

Interesting read on what Mike Neighbors, HC at Arkansas, is doing and his reaction to Texas's hire of his good friend Vic Schaefer.

Shutdown comes at a good time for Neighbors

Neighbors also talked about the departure of Mississippi State coach Vic Schaefer, who recently took over at Texas. Both Neighbors and Schaefer worked together at Arkansas under Gary Blair, now the coach at Texas A&M.

“I was floored. ... You would have never seen me bet one dollar on Vic (going to Texas), but it makes sense,” Neighbors said. “When you look now and seeing potential cuts going on at Mississippi State and Vic’s a Texas guy, and I don’t think there’s any sign that Coach Blair is retiring any time soon, yes it makes sense now that you look back at it.

“But honestly, I’m glad he’s out of the league (Southeastern Conference), I’m not going to hold back on that. He had built Mississippi State into a monster; I’m not going to say that Nikki (McCray-Penson, who replaced Schaefer at Mississippi State) is not going to keep it going, but I know Vic and what he had done and proven it. (They were the) hardest team probably for us to play against, even mentioning South Carolina.”

These Vic-isms are hilarious. Man, I love our Coach.

Texas basketball players recall their favorite Vic Schaefer sayings

Junior forward DeYona Gaston: "When he says, 'God Almighty!' When he's kind of mad and he says 'God Almighty!' It's pretty funny. I try not to laugh."

Sophomore guard Rori Harmon: "'Praise the Lord and Hook'em Horns.' Oh, I have another one! It's in practice, we all know when it's coming. Three minutes comes up on the clock and we call it defense on the floor. He says 'Grab your partners, defense on the floor.' He just says it, we know it's coming. It's probably one of my favorite ones, because it's pretty funny even though we're about to do something that's not that exciting sometimes."

Junior guard Shay Holle: "I love when he says 'That ain't it.' If someone does something or explains something that's not quite right, he'll just be like "That ain't it." It sticks."

Junior forward Taylor Jones: "Okay, so when I was first getting recruited here to UT when I was transferring, he would always say 'The proof is in the pudding,' meaning the proof is here, we've done it, he's won, and so that's why I should come here. He has a super strong southern accent and so he would say it so many times in a conversation, probably like three or four times, he would just say "The proof's in the pudding.' That has stuck with me. I think it is so funny."

Sophomore forward Aaliyah Moore: "If I don't take a charge, like if we're in practice, he'll be like 'Chicken Little.' He'll just call me Chicken Little or he'll just give me a look. He'll be like 'Are you (scared) A-Mo?' Of course he knows I'm not but he says it."

Senior guard Sonya Morris: "He says 'How you do anything is how you do everything.' I've carried that to off the court too, because sometimes I don't feel like going to class or I don't feel like doing work, but honestly when you think about it, how you do anything is how you do everything. If I can give 100% on the court, I can give 100% in the classroom. He's got a lot of them, but I think that's the one that I think of daily."

Freshman guard Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda: "He says a lot of funny things. One thing that he really says is 'It's not what we do, but how we do it." That one isn't funny, but it's something that sticks in my head.

Good stuff right there.
