Welcome to Texas, Vic Schaefer

Can someone please explain what Title IX is. I keep hearing about it from a lot of sports but I have no idea what it means regarding this specific topic

“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

It was passed in 1972 and is credited with forcing schools at all levels to provide equal athletic opportunities for female student-athletes.

It's also broadly applied to employment opportunities. Hypothetically, if a school exhibits a discriminatory pattern by hiring, say, only male coaches in its athletic programs, the school's compliance with Title IX requirements could come under question.

What is Title IX?

This is a good, antiseptic explanation:
Title IX - Wikipedia
The one thing that it doesn't discuss is this is why there aren't equivalent sports in college leagues. Have you ever wondered why UT doesn't have a men or women's gymnastics team? Money and Title IX. Have you wondered why in a league of 10 schools, only 7 of them offer softball? Or why Oklahoma State women don't have a volleyball team? Money and Title IX.

Federal law that stipulates that women be provided all the same opportunities as men at educational institutions and prevents discrimination on the basis of sex.

My guess is that Ced is using a bit of hyperbole to imply that female fans will be unhappy with the fact that we did not find a woman to lead the program. Because this in no way runs afoul of the actual federal statute

Rori Harmon, Sara Puckett, and Jersey Wolfenbarger were all top priority recruits for Schaefer and held offers. Jada Malone was also a target, but did not hold an offer. At MS State, although Mississippi did not have a lot of high caliber prospects, he said it was a top priority for him to get the best in-state kids to MS State, and I think he'll do the same thing at Texas.

While I understand and agree that equality should ALWAYS be considered, at the end of the day you hire the best person you can get. I know there are those out there who would've rather had a female over a male even if they knew the male was a better candidate. I'm not one of them. As a male, I would have welcomed the chance to play for some of the top female coaches, so it's not about misogyny with me.

If CDC could hire Kim Mulkey to coach our men's team I'd jump at it.

Jason Key and Shane Laflin were doing their podcast when the hiring news broke...they were shocked. Around the 31:00 mark. They also discuss Paige Bradley earlier in the podcast.

I agree that CDC, barring a finish in the final 4 with KA, had in mind that he was looking for a new coach. But, since it's unlikely that MSU has a Longhorn handy at their place to take a picture, makes you wonder WHEN Vic and his family made the trip to Austin for the job interview.

Maybe this was wrapped up a month ago and CDC has been sitting on it, timing out the KA announcement, letting the hurt feelings settle and then dropping the news of the hire.
Listening to the interview between Galindo and CDC, it looks like my guess was wrong. According to CDC, he initiated this process the after he let KA go. Grew up in La Grange, interesting.

I believe what he said (or at least he meant) is that he grew up spending weekends visiting his grandparents in LaGrange. I'm pretty sure that he was born in Austin but grew up mostly in Houston. Attended Lutheran High School and after attending A&M coached for several years at Houston Milby High School.

You are correct!

Well, DKR was the starting QB for OU and Jody graduated from Baylor. So, winning blurs all history.

Both these bozos can kick rocks. Only idiots would start bringing that garbage up. Not surprised why these two hacks. I’ve see Cedric at women’s game and he looks like a bum. Never dressed up. Always has faded mast sweatpants and only shirts. Good thing his and Kirk bohls media is going away more and more everyday.

In anticipation of a coaching change and reading the "discussions" going on about future coaches, I thought about this as well. First, it's a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't situation. I did a search of the last 10 years coaches of the year*:
2020 - Dawn Staley [not leaving, she's sitting in the catbird's seat]
2019 - Kim Mulkey [hrrumph, not going there]
2018 - Vic Schaefer [he's got a sweet deal going there, why would he leave?]
2017 - Geno Auriemma [not leaving]
2016 - Auriemma
2015 - Courtney Banghart (Princeton) [know nothing about her]
2014 - Muffet McGraw [too old, not budging]
2013 - McGraw
2012 - Mulkey
2011 - Mulkey
2010 - Connie Yori (Nebraska) - resigned in 2016 under pressure after allegations of player mistreatment

Yes, there's the Oregon coach (white male), the Louisville coach (white male), the Arizona coach (African-American female), and on and on.

But what about an up and comer who can....

Vic is 59 and everyone including Aggies thought he was waiting for A&M to open up. We got the best proven coach we could get who has a history of rebuilding a program.

Sorry, not sorry.

Adia Barnes at Arizona is the daughter of former New England Patriots linebacker Pete Barnes. He was African American.

I think all of his staff will definitely follow him unless Johnnie Harris gets the head job. Jackson-Durett was the Oklahoma PG, so she should have some connections.

Vic did not let his players let him know he was leaving (they found out via the CDC tweet), so apparently they’re pretty angry at him. I would be a little surprised if any of them followed him. Would love to get Jackson and Gaston though.

Texas had to have At least met the $2M package that Vic was offered by MS. I’ll bet his salary is $2M plus at Texas. Plus the $1.2M buyout.

John Cohen is the AD at Mississippi State. This is his announcement about Vic Schaffer leaving. Actually no formal comment at all that Vic had left the program. Seems a little pissed. It appears they will not immediately be offering the job to one of Vic’s assistants. “Making a National search”. Looks more and more like he will be bringing all his assistants with him to Texas.

I think Johnnie Harris is still very much in play/a candidate for the job. I would really love to have her in Austin, because she would work wonders with Charli and develop her game to another level. He has some great recruiters on the staff, so it'll be awesome to see what they can do in Austin.
