Pretty great news! So, now what do you folks think happens next? Phone calls to existing players? Phone calls to potential recruits, existing recruits? Do we think he brings his staff from MSU? Does anyone on the current (previous?) staff stay? Who do we think might leave the team?

Well we know Celeste Taylor is not going anywhere and I don't think collier is as well. Those two players are the irreplaceable players left on the roster. If other players do decide to leave it will be players who didn't get a lot of minutes.

Both Johnnie Harris (post player coach) and Dionnah Jackson-Durrett are Associate Head Coaches at MSU. I'm hoping they both come with him, but especially Harris.
 
If you have the SEC Network, they're currently airing a Miss. State vs South Carolina game from a couple of years ago.

Ironically, former Longhorns head coach Gail Goestenkors is calling the game.

We needed a GREAT coach and we got one. I would have loved to have gotten a GREAT FEMALE coach, but the great female coaches (Muffet, Tara, KM, Dawn, etc) weren't going anywhere.

To be fair to Michelle, she got that gender excerpt from Danny Davis’ AAS writeup. And I think it’s something of note. Not that it should deter us from pursuing the best coach available, we should be mindful of the overall gender equity across the department.

Due to head coaching changes, high school signees often get released from their LOI if requested. Would be good fortune if we get her and she eligible immediately as we need help at the power forward position:

DeYona Gaston – Forward, 6-2, Pearland, Texas (Pearland High School)
DeYona Gaston, a four-star power forward, enters her senior season rated 95th nationally and 21st at her position by espnW.

"I think DeYona had 28 last night in her game," said Schaefer. "She was at one time rated number one in her class in high school as a freshman. She's had a few little nicks and injuries the last couple of years, but I think she is back. She is going to be everything that we thought she was going to be as a freshman. I can remember watching and following her for a long, long time."

Gaston was one of the most highly-touted players in the 2020 class early on. As a freshman at Pearland High School in Texas, she averaged a double-double with 17.5 ppg and 11.3 rpg to go along with 3.0 bpg and 2.0 spg. However, she missed all of her sophomore season due to injuries, dropping her in the rankings.

Ranked as the No. 36 on Prospect Nation, Gaston proved she was still one of the best players in the country, posting 18.1 ppg on 52 percent shooting as a junior in 2018-19. She also averaged 9.5 rpg and 1.9 bpg. In two seasons, she's totaled 926 points, 542 rebounds, 128 blocks, 92 steals and 58 assists.

With the hopes of putting together an impressive senior year, Gaston is coming off a campaign where she claimed TGCA 6A District Player of the Year as well as the Defensive Player of the Year honors en route to earning a spot on the All-State team.
 
We don't often land a head coach when we're not the ones trying to do the money-whipping. Someone sure is looking out for Chris Del Conte . . .

Racer, Vic is about defense 1st. If you're not going to play defense, you're not going to see the court.
 
Well, this is pretty interesting. I like Vic and expect him to do a great job. But, yes, whoever said it, he does coach a game a lot like Aston -- defense first, pressure style man-to-man. I don't think it will be a hard adjustment for the players. Obviously people are going to be expecting great things, with his recent success and at a salary like that. Once before we went out and got a coach at the top of WBB at the time. Hope this works out better than that did. He will have to be given time. It will be interesting to see how we are 5 or 6 years from now, unless he can get Rickea Jackson to come with him. Then we might be better real quick.
 
Even though I didn't believe Schaefer was a realistic candidate, I noticed during my reading of different coaches' bios that Miss. State hired Vic Schaefer just a few weeks before we hired Karen Aston back in 2012. Texas' AD's of the past have lacked the proper vision when vetting candidates; Plonsky really missed the nearby boat with Vic eight years ago.

Gail didn't know what she was getting into with recruiting (we knew it, she admitted it). Whether the administrators could have helped more with her staff has been debated ad nauseam. Vic knows exactly what he's getting into with recruiting and I'm confident his staff will be assembled better than Goestenkors'.

I know it's water under the bridge, but I had no issues with Goestenkors bringing Gale Valley with her from Duke, or hiring Micki Demoss. My biggest problem was her hiring Lakale Malone from Nebraska (apparently because "she knew the Big 12 conference").

Coincidentally, I read an article the other day where Lakale Malone was fired as an assistant coach at lowly Illinois.

I don't think the timing would have worked out for getting Vic in 2012 even if Plonsky had been open to it. I went back and googled it. He was named MSU head coach the week the NCAA tournament began in 2012. Texas lost their 1st round NCAA tourney the weekend after the announcement and then Gail resigned still having 2 years on her contract. Aston wasn't announced until April 3rd. When Vic was interviewing it seems highly likely we didn't even think we had an open position.

I was thinking about this some more. Recently, there was a coach who took a new basketball job and then more recently declined the job during this pandemic. Her reasoning, to the consternation of her new bosses, was that she didn't want to move her family during lockdown. And, her old school took her back.

So, you have wind this back to a few weeks/months(?) ago when Vic obviously journeyed to Austin with his family. If his assistants didn't know ahead of time, I'm sure that Vic told them after he got back.

Typically, it goes like this:
a) hey, who wants to go with me to Austin? You are all welcome.
b) one or two of the assistant head coaches might say, "Ummm, I think I have a shot at replacing you", so they have to wait for the AD to interview them
c) and in this pandemic, they might have a better than usual chance at the interview
d) and those who don't might consider heading with Vic to Austin also have to wonder if they want to pick up their families and move in the middle of a pandemic? House hunt? School shop? What schools?

And that's all before we even get to the new coaches talking to the existing and future players. That's why I harp on the picture with CDC. I'd love to get my hands on the metadata of the picture to know when that snap was taken.

To be honest, I think alot of us were just not sure that Texas would spend the money on a big name, especially with the crisis at hand. However, as you said CDC knew EXACTLY what he was doing and this hire proves it. He made IMO a homerun hire that has now put the NCCAA WBB world on notice that Texas means business. I for one am ELATED.....
