UT Band Could Be There This Sat But Vote Not To Play

Well I got a call from the Alumni Band President Elect and we had a good 20 minute conversation. She shares my feelings and said that Alumni Band had been asked to not make a statement on the whole "Eyes" issue until Longhorn Band made a public statement. I told her that the news that we don't have enough kids to put a band in that stands to play our school song should be considered the official statement and the silence from Alumni Band is deafening. Just like everything else in the world- she said the opinions are varied from the group but an overwhelming majority of members have shared my sentiment. There was a planned silent auction and fundraiser coming up to support Longhorn Band scholarships and I informed her there would be no money coming from me at this time and I am sure most other members agree with me.

Stupid stances like that put a lot of people in difficult positions.

She did say that Alumni Band has been told by CDC that we cannot perform at any games this year due to COVID and ticket limitations. I am going to write CDC tomorrow to see if that decision can be reconsidered based on the stance from Longhorn Band and encourage others on here to push CDC if you feel so inclined. I will write Hartzell again too.

NEW: The @LonghornBand will not participate in Saturday’s @Texasfootball game after about half of its members said they wouldn’t play “The Eyes of Texas” in an internal survey.

The administration of this University has no guts.
Alums - cut off all funding, no more donations - give em back their seats and suites

1/2 refuse to play. Ok, let's cut the band by that 1/2 and play on with a smaller band. Some of the more talented members may be able to learn a new instrument on the fly. However, I suspect that story about not having enough players of certain instruments is a mere chickensh!t cover. The admin needs to grow some balls. Could you see Frank Erwin, or maybe even Dollar Bill*, putting up with this bs...?!?!?

Current admin: grow some balls.

*Dollar Bill would probably see the loss of $ donations and put his foot down.

Well not going to this game eiither, I gave my tickets to my daughter and grandkids. I just cannot get excited anymore about this school. No Band,no eyes, classless coach, malcontents. I am staying home and cheering for the Baptists. Never thought that would happen.

Isn't it F disgusting there is a thread about 1/2 the LHB being "UNCOMFORTABLE" about playing THE EYES OF TEXAS? .... which has nothing racial about it.

The female band member who was so overwhelmed with emotion in the 1969 Arkie game is something that no longer exists. I can't find it, but I'm sure many here know the girl I'm talking about.

Here it is. After the Peschell catch. Skip to 3:30 if it isn't cued up.

Her first name was Elizabeth, IIRC ... could be wrong. She has been ID'd on HF in the past. She is a true inspiration about the spirit of being one of our fans..

Sabre may remember her full name.

I put a note into our LHAB President Elect to see what she is hearing from other Alumni Band members and what platform we have with Scott Hanna and the LHB leadership.

I know Saturdays are about Football and the team and the band doesn't move the needle for most of you but this one is personal for me.

I sent both Dr. Hanna and Prof. Junkin an email giving them my two cents. Im not sure where they stand on this but for years they have both proudly conducted The Eyes.

From CBS Sports: "The band is reportedly "fairly evenly divided in opinion" when it comes to "The Eyes of Texas." Without particular band members playing certain instruments though, the song can't be performed."

So the entire tuba section won't play it? The entire trumpet section?

Give me a break.... these students think this is their big historic moment. Idiots.

DKR would just hate this garbage of team and 'Eyes'

A totally classless bunch of morons. I would love to see these idiots when they are told to hit the road. How many would have an attitude change and a change of heart?

Wonder what percentage of players would stay under those circumstance? Not all these Horn's are on the malcontent team. They must be just playing along to avoid total divisiveness (as if it doesn't already exist. Not enough quality teams for these and probably other malcontents to find a good home!!

I have to think that however many there are on ‘opposite’ sides, that numerous of the nonwoke crowd would bend to their teammates because they feel that might be the honorable thing to do.

It is probably a challenge to bring everyone in from points around the nation on short notice... however, I am guessing it becomes easier with more than a few days advance notice....

I bet our band's ~3 million alumni can get the job done
It would be a great moment, with video of the current band members crying in their tubas as the school song plays

I still do not follow the logic of this incessant desire to be "inclusive" with people who are telling you, to your face, "we hate you, we hate everything about you." The more reasonable move would be to release them to go someplace where they will be happy. This used to be called 'win-win.'

I wonder if any BMDs are wavering on their pledges for the south end zone project because of this mess? That might light a fire under CDC and company.

That is a BS cop out AGAIN by Hartzell.
Every other school has managed to put some form of their band in the stands.
I like it, he just told the band we don't need a marching band at games anymore, you aren't important, turn in your ****, start paying full tuition, and go eat a bag of dicks... At least that's how I read it...
