Yes, this is true. It wasn't an either/or, but there was a bit of a change in focus. Carter pushed the cruise missiles delayed
deployed from the B-52 as a cheaper and better alternative to the expensive B-1A. Fortunately, the B-1B was able to become an excellent platform itself after some significant changes.

The real dodging of the bullet was the cancelation of the XB-70 about a decade earlier. It was huge, cruised at Mach 3 and might have been the coolest, most bad *** plane ever built (though only 2 were built). But it cost a fortune, was vulnerable to SAMs, and would have been vulnerable to the MiG-25 interceptor built in the '70s. It would have been a big waste of money had it been ordered in big numbers.

Agree. It would have needed to have SR-71 speed to be workable.

I find these declarations of changing the name of the gulf and annexation as dumb. Complete waste of time. The only positive is if Trump is talking about these ridiculous things in order to cover what he is actually working on.

He's already trolling the left for fun. I think the only thing he's pretty serious about is getting control of the panama canal back and cutting off subsidies to Canada (which I didn't know was a thing). I did laugh when he called him Governor Trudeau.
 
It is called negotiation. You put your target under threat to get what you want. What Trump wants from Canada is no tariffs on US imports, closing their border, and increasing their defense budget so we will not be solely responsible for protecting North America.

The GoM rename to GoA is to put more pressure on Mexico to stop the flow and remove their tariffs on US goods ( to and from Mexico).

The Greenland deal is to pave the way for the US to protect Greenland. Best case Denmark pays us to defend.
