Tommy Boy is in Denial

There may be hope on the horizon - a close friend of mine is a huge LSU guy, both politically and financially. He called this afternoon to talk about a number of things, not the least of which are my thoughts on LSU hiring Herman. This is one of the guys that brought Saban to LSU.

I channeled my best Scott Hill and told him no way we would lose that recruiting advantage.

This is my biggest concern! What is the offensive philosophy? It appears Herman wants to be like Ohio State under Jim Tressel. Power football. Which is fine if you have the proper O-Line, and great punter. Currently, my local middle school runs a more sophisticated offense than Herman/Beck!

There is nothing worse than seeing Sam in a pro-style offense. Sam standing in the pocket scanning the field is a painful sight. Pro-sytle offenses need a QB with a rocket arm, and the ability that can read defenses.

So I checked a single recruiting site that claim We finished 3rd, 25th, 7th and 10th the last 4 years!! 11 and a quarter average, maybe we're down to 15-20 average with the players we've lost. That's talent!!!! We've got the horses, so lets run and throw N and S!

Another thing to you and mb227: I havn't gone back and looked at any film, but I recall seeing many huge holes in the O line while QB and RB were holding hands for 1-2 seconds.Even good lines don't keep the holes open that long, but good playcalling gets the RBs to those holes light years faster!!!!!

I'm glad you reminded me of all that. I remember thinking a few months ago about how we were basically going to have the same coaching staff minus that list of talented players, which they were. In reality, I was thinking we would suffer a dip this year because of that lost talent to be possibly offset by Herman calling the plays and how some of the top QB's we faced (Baker, Randolph etc) had moved on. I was hoping the cycle of talent might bring us closer.

Herman has enough talent to beat Maryland. He has enough talent to win 8-10 games or more. Anything less than 8 is a failure, and 8 is not a success either. We have the talent to do better on offense and defense. Herman needs to show he can make the right calls to make wins happen. He has yet to do so.

My opinion: We have enough talent to beat Maryland, Tulsa, Kansas, Iowa State, Baylor and Tech but not OU or TCU. The rest of them are maybe the equal of us right now. Not sure about Iowa State. They beat OU last year. That leaves OSU, USC, Kansas State and West Virginia right? Toss-ups to me (Kansas State based upon history). So we had six "sure" wins based on talent alone and have already blown one. To get to eight victories other than OU and TCU we need to win out against the "sure things" and three of the four toss-ups because I don't feel we can beat either OU or TCU as of now.

Gonna' be tough.
 
Just checked the scores for the weekend, and our loss was the biggest ****-stain by far. Way to go TH!
 
The Express-News writer was doing nothing more than putting a tuxedo on a pig. This game was lost because this team was not prepared, the play calling was Pop Warner at best. Maryland has some talent, but Texas has more and again didn't play up to it. When two teams are equal in talent, the difference is preparation and coaching. In this case one team was better than the other and the difference is the less talented team was better prepared and better coached.

Without a major shift in determination, I don’t see a 9 win season. I have thought 8 is this year’s ceiling, maybe 9 with a little of Lady Luck on our side. However, I have also said that I would wait until after the Maryland game to say much.

The game yesterday was overall, a collapse. Sure there were bright spots, but the team didn’t wake up until late 2nd Qtr. Too much loss of focus, costly penalties, missed assignments, and so on. Too many backs rotating in and out. I believe it was Porter who couldn’t see the hole the line made, and ran directly into the center and left guard instead of through the hole on his right for 1 yard or so. Could have had 10

Anyway, doing this over and over is going to cost us. Unless the team and coaches get their minds right, I only see 3 high probability wins, maybe 4. I hope they take this humiliation as a wake up call, and get their collective asses in gear.

Players disappearing-CJ maybe our best player, keontay was running well.

A big difference between Herman and N Saban is that Saban had the balls to change qbs in last year's championship game--a freshman who hadn't played much, and Herman wouldn't go to Buchele a much better passer than Sam.

Here's a thought: how bout Del Conte appointing Orlando as the decision maker and demoting Herman. I'd go for that.
The decision to go for two when there was so much time left was ridiculous. Luckily it didn't matter.
 
Has anyone mentioned that we had more than 100 yards in penalties. Totally unacceptable. Worst of all in my humble opinion is on the first play of the game we had a player with a uniform infraction. We took a five yard penalty rather than call a time out. A really stupid way to screw up a opening drive plan.

I understand the sentiment but the same was said last year. Our OL played much better and we have good freshman who can play at least 4 games this year. 8-4 is more likely. Just not 10 wins like many were hoping.

Now that 48 hours have passed and I’m not suicidal anymore, I’m more in the mchammer camp, with this caveat:

If TH can get it right with the QB position, admittedly a huge “if,” this team could be pretty good. That will mean a change from SE, and maybe a move away from Beck.

On D, Orlando is too good a DC not to fix his issues. I think we’ll see more discipline starting this weekend. But frankly, it should have happened last weekend.

The writer of the article (from ESPN) said: Herman mangled the analogy a bit. In the novel, Lenny kills a puppy, a mouse and a woman and only dreams of rabbits. And Lenny gets killed at the end.

So coach is trying to act smart with his well-read background and can't even get it right. Maybe I need to take that Mensa test to see how I do...

 
After watching the PC I'm even more pissed. Tommy is in complete denial. He has more excuses than a politician. When asked about all the penalties his response was, "well Maryland had 9". First, no the didn't they only had 7 for 44 yards, no PF's. Second, what difference does it make? The fact is your team failed regardless of what the other team did.

He then said the penalties were the result of being tentative and nervous. Again, ridiculous excuse. I do believe dropped balls, bad passes, missed assignments can be caused by nervousness, but PF's are exactly the opposite. A tentative player pulls up and misses a tackle. Texas' were the result of over aggressiveness and selfishness wanting to make the "WOW" hit. He said GJ led with his shoulder. NO he didn't, he led with his helmet with intent to harm. I've played the game I know the difference. Then he said all Foster did was put his arms down. More BS, he pushed the QB's head down.

I agree the fumble reversal was BS. No other league on the planet does that get overturned except Texas playing the the B12. But the rest were 100% accurate and even if I were a ref calling that game I would have had to make every one of those calls even knowing how harmful they would be. That is if I had any integrity and intellectual honesty.
 
Tentative and nervous... LSU wasn't against Miami... these guys are football players. Say what you want but they are were all recruited by the biggest schools. What's going on here?

Easy now I really exist. Not to steal from I don’t exist’s gig. I’m asking y’all to look at the past three years recruiting before the 2018 class, tell me who’s still left and then show me the game changers. I’ll be more apt to jump off the Herman bandwagon next year and even more so the next when it’s all his guys....

I don't care how much they tell us Sam has improved, he got excited at the end and made two huge turnovers. He is just not ready to be a starting QB. For all their BS, this is the same Ehlinger that lost the game against OSU, Tech, and now Maryland.

Tom Herman is now square in the sites of all Texas fans, if he doesn't want to be the next Charlie Strong he better put together a hell of a season and a hell of a recruiting class. As of right now Texas can do a hell of a lot better than him.

Oh yeah and Shane could go start anywhere. I didn’t know there were so many affirmative action fans in the House after three straight losing seasons and the worst percentage ever in Texas Longhorn history. Thank God everyone respected women and turned their guns in.......
