Todd Dodge cautions Texas about starting QB Quinn Ewers too soon

Sammy Davis Jr's The Candy Man Can is about drug pushers
Bobby Darrin's Mack the Knife about murderous mobster

and so on....and so on
No, Candy Man was written for the movie "Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory".

I never paid attention to the lyrics of Mack The Knife. Probably most people don't. However, I think you would be hard pressed to listen to any "gangsta rap" and not hear the despicable lyrics. Now, does that mean I think the story of Mack The Knife is cute? No, but it is a song from an opera written in the 1920s. Why Darin and the record company took it and thought it would be a catchy tune is anyone's guess, but I doubt it was to glorify the murderous rampages of Mack The Knife.

:whiteflag:

I don't get the fascination with young people and this **** "music", but that's what it is. ****. Frankly, it is just part of what makes me less and less interested in watching Texas football. And, if that alienates an 18 year old who should have better things to do than read this forum, so be it.

"gangsta rap"

Its GANGSTA rap. There are other forms of rap which don't rely so heavily on that stuff.

Most of it not great, but that is just my opinion.

I liked a lot of the rap in the 90s that had the same despicable lyrics, understanding it was just artistic expression. Musically, rap has just degenerated IMO.

But I also understand I am a middle-aged man, going on old age, and my day has come and gone.

Lol, I still listen to Run-DMC when I travel in the back of an airplane.

No way, Detective....your age is fine and has nothing to do with it. Most all of our "art" has, in fact, deteriorated dramatically in quality, substance, and by virtually any reasonable and meaningful measure.
Most rap is trash ...but so is most other popular music. Have you heard the latest "country" music? And don't get me started on paintings/sculpture etc...
Our "art" only reflects what's inside us....and it ain't that pretty.
Have you noticed how dark much of our media is these days? Games, movies, music videos, some commercials even, etc?
Look at what they do with our former heroines like Spider Man, Batman. Etc..
Back to the subject.....IMHO the majority of rap and it's content is rubbish of the first degree....plain stoopid...or worse.
But again...turn on today's country...or pop...if you want to hear stoopid. I personally think rap about the worst as far as substance goes...
And this from someone who once loved it.
Why did 2LiveCrew seem more innocent? Lol
Onto other genres and more recent...Was NineInchNails "good"? I use to be way into that I'm sad to say. Crap is crap. And darkness is darkness....
There might be something more deplorable than rap...Marilyn Manson, The Weekend is pretty sick, LilNasX and his satanic schtick. There again, though, we've had that, too, in the past...in varying genres and varying forms both subtle and non.
Money, sex, drugs, power, indulgence, satanic or more subtle idol worship, lacking any real truth or lasting substance...empty searching and longing for something real...
Its all the same to me...and not in a good way...

It is true that every generation bemoans the quality and downward spiral of the next generation's music and messaging.

And once upon a time, your parents/grandparents said that about...
Elvis
The Beatles
Steve Miller
Heavy Metal
Early Rap

As it relates to rep, I think the introduction of gangsta rap into R&B did have a negative impact on the messaging in the lyrics. It celebrates things that should not be celebrated. I also, however, get Pumped Up Kicks stuck in my head sometimes, to my shame.

And the parents and grandparents were right then, too. ..Shows how far we truly have fallen. And what is shocking today won't be tomorrow and that isn't good.
Ill drop that...
But on a lighter note....
I remember when rap was fun...
Checkout an 80s song..."Yo Mama"
Of course..Rappers Delight
Slick Rick
Dana Dane
Young MC
RunDMC
Beastie Boys

Hard to say where it changed.
For me it was somewhere in my Cutlass with my RF15s and NWA/DOC.
Either way...I bet even Luther Campbell and TooShort would be surprised where rap has ventured.

So.. about Todd Dodge....does he listen to Qdafool?

We can all agree to disagree on all things music, but this is an objective fact about country music.
Modern day country music (the crap on the radio) sucks ***. Sorry -0 if you disagree you're just wrong. LOL

Popular country music as vapid, . Its actually just watered down rock and roll or hip-hop. Where are the melodies which used to make country great? No where. Just a bunch of hacks.

Waylon would be right "I don't think Hank done it this way..."

that said here are plenty of folks doing country music right. You just won't hear them on the radio.

Couldn't agree more, DS.
Truly sad....

I read page 1. Then I jumped to page 4. Classic hornfans.

So, yes, modern rap is poo. It went south about a decade ago. Modern country is mostly trash. There are some traditional folks sprinkled in there but they're difficult to find.

Sadly, I'm going to detour this thread. Ewers. Is anyone worried that he didn't crack the 3 deep at tOSU? Is he gonna be a Bomar? I mean, he was NIL before it was cool. :)

Nope.In the few plays he played last year, he looked very ready and in total command in the shotgun. He was a year behind the guy who won the job. Not to worry.

Can we please get away from our terrible cultural rot and back to genuine long term concerns like UT football?

Asking for a friend. ;)

What about those other 2-3 guys?
Between Card, Ewers and Murphy we have 3 highly rated QBs.
I have a feeling one of them is going to work out.
I don't really care which one.
And then there's these guys Bijan and Worthy to take a little pressure off.
Seeing some crystal balls for Manning to Texas.
Best O-line recruiting class in the nation.

Future looks bright. :smokin::hookem:

Very good. I’m one to talk. We are relying on a transfer from UCF and true fish from flower mound. Hell, we spent about 4 days talking ourselves in to CT2 before he went to Neb.

I will be interested to see if NIL socialism works with that OL pancake thing. It will take a special hand to properly motivate and mold 20 year old kids with free housing and phat wallets. As a retired HS OL, I predict a lot of Uber eats and gaming purchases.

NIL socialism is a good term, or I prefer to call NIL: College Free Agency.

Either way, I worry how NIL will negatively change the game of college football we all love....

We have riches in the QB room this fall and Manning will add to that next year.

Suspect Card will have an edge going into Spring but Ewers may surprise us all come fall...

I was under the impression that the Pancake thing gave all UT scholly OL the same amount. That was what I was talking about. It's a novel idea.

Yeah, NIL is going to be a bad deal for the game. The rich will get richer and we will have more stratification. The Caleb Williams of the world need to worry about what's going to make them a higher draft pick. The difference between Trevor Lawrence and Mac Jones is $21,000,000. The real difference after that is that second contract. For example, Baker Mayfield is not going to have the same kind of second contract that he would have hoped.

Venables is preaching culture and a lot of intrinsic stuff along with good football to try to keep/attract players. I think he learned a lot from Dabo. Stoops was meat, taters, and effective football. Dabo tries to peel the onion back more and BV is following that model.

I believe this will separate the truly motivated players that love the game and have a dream of playing in the NFL and the players that really value the education they are getting from the ones that only care about the money it can bring.
