Todd Dodge cautions Texas about starting QB Quinn Ewers too soon

You and I agree on the assessments of the former QBs.
My point was more directed at an unusually high number of fans who clamor for QB2 once the freshman savior doesn’t live up to their expectations.
That’s fair, and a good point. I will be surprised and very disappointed if Ewers isn’t more polished and further along when he steps on the field this September than what we saw last September with Card.

Actually, when asked what game he considered the most complete game played on all sides of the ball Sark said it was the game against Louisiana that Card started.
And that was a good Louisiana team.
Card was shakey during the Arkansas game, obviously.
But the whole team was.
I trust in Sark, but I will always wonder "what if".
What if Card continues to start against that horrible TTech team and gets a good win.
What if Card starts against TCU in a game that was won by Bijan anyway.
Does he put the Arky loss behind him, gain confidence and get his feet under him?
Casey played great and did an awesome job.
But did Card really get a fair shot?
If Ewers starts, winning his first game and then looks bad against a good Bama team will he get pulled and Card inserted?

I really believe Card will be much improved this coming season.
It wouldn't surprise me if he started.
He and the coaches will thoroughly critique film from last season and go over his mistakes and pocket presence.
He has the physical ability he just needs a healthy dose of confidence. Once he gets that he will be hard to keep off the field.

I was somewhat disappointed in Sark not getting Card and WRs in a better sync. Quick hitting throws to WRs and RBs. This may have allowed Card to develope confidence. But i am just an armchair qb what do i know.
The Arkansas game was a buzzsaw. Our only chance to win that one was if we put Casey in much earlier like the 2nd quarter which is what i was calling for. At that moment i was a better coach than Sark. He flubbed that one. I definitely see limitations in Sark's real time decisions in games.

[Card's] nervousness in the pocket was palpable. He has no clock in his head.

This is my concern. Loved his arm and legs. But he looked scared of being hit by grown men.

I don't know if this is healthy lol, but I wish there was a way for him to get hit in practice on every pass play. Normalize him to the impending contact. Let his mind learn to play his position regardless of being about to be hit.

If you watched his play in the last couple of games his pocket awareness was much better.
He stepped up when he could to deliver a pass or took off running when he had room.
Night and day from the Arky game.

I'm not saying he's going to "get it" but I'm not going to rule him out next fall because he struggled last year. He flashed some solid QB play in short/rare occasions so he has it in him. We'll see what happens.

I thought the way he played in the W Va game showed some real promise. He certainly wasn't the reason we lost that game, and he did a lot to get us back into it. I would have loved to have seen how he would have developed if Game 2 had been at home against Arkansas with a competent o-line. We might be telling a different story right now.

I don’t want to belabor the point, but we could play 2 QB’s at once if we switched to the 10 yard minimum offense. Given that Card once played WR in HS, seems like we have the personnel to run it.

Why not three? Slide Malik over to TE and let's ride.

Colt was so good in his second year that before the injury — on that sneak against KSU

That was his freshman year. He came back and started against A&M at home and got re-injured. I remember his sophomore year that his INT numbers were up, and he had some games where he wasn't quite hitting on all cylinders. He lost at A&M and there were a lot of questions about the direction the team was going. And then they showed up and ran ASU out of town at the Holiday Bowl, and that's when I think the light really seemed to come on for him.

But then again, on consecutive series against Kansas one week earlier, he lost a fumble due to a lack of awareness in the pocket, and next, threw an interception, perhaps a pick-6 as I recall. We lost to KU due in large part to those two plays.

I would describe the “perceived improvement” against WV as an aberration, not a trend. Certainly not yet.

True, and I'm not arguing he completely turned into a top-level QB. But if you look at the KU game, it's interesting that his first two drives reflected Casey's first two drives had the same result as Casey's: a TD and a fumble. The pick 6 was definitely bad, but it was one throw. I'm not going to define a guy for one mistake. It's not like he's the first freshman in history to throw a pick 6.

Yeah theoretically we lost in large part because of those mistakes - along with the mistakes Casey made. The mistakes the receivers made. The atrocious o-line play. The MIA defense. Card's mistakes weren't great but they shouldn't have been difference makers against Kansas. Maybe he plays through those mistakes if he's in the whole game. I suspect he would have.

Anyway, I guess we'll see! He's definitely going to have to show more this year, but I've no reason to think he won't improve over the off-season.

Don’t forget that Casey was dealing with a much more serious than reported thumb injury plus he was slammed down in one of the games — perhaps OSU — and likely suffered a sternum or chest injury. (That kid was so tough.)

So we had a seriously injured CT vs. a healthy HC…

An experienced CT that started most of the season vs HC who barely had any reps coming in, as well.

I was at WVU. He made good passes but still had multiple jittery plays imo

Was that the A&M game when Colt was hit late on a cheap shot and was that the bonfire disaster year when Texas could not get a meal at the hotel?

That was true freshman Chris Simms that got the really dirty late hit out of bounds.
Applewhite got food poisoning from the ratty hotel they were in and was unable to play.

I’ve said this many times-
Two games that should have resulted in criminal charges against the referees
1 Grant Teaffs last game.
2. The Aggie game following the bonfire tragedy. Aggie showed their *** from the hotel incidents to no food.. I’ve had zero respect for that group of hypocrites ever since.

Bonfire game was '99. Colt's injury was '06 in Austin. He'd been injured the game before at K State, Mack probably brought him back too early and he was never right in that game. Took two big hits on the final possession that put him out.

But they also taught Mack Brown to NEVER trust aggy nor anybody anywhere close to malfunction junction during game week.

I'll never forget Teaff's last game. It is very rare that officials determine who will win before the team's take the field. That was definitely one. That was the final coffin nail for me as far as the SWC was concerned. They were hell-bent on assuring that Teaff was NOT going to lose his final SWC game.

Aggy shennigans are aggy shennigans. Who can ever surprised by what the agroids pull out of their arzes?

Sometimes we forget- these 18 year old “superstars” will spend 8 hours a day playing Fortnight or wondering if their nose is too big or how to get rid of acne so they can get enough courage to ask Suzie Q out

Ive used the Baylor example several times and that along with the Aggie bonfire game were the only two games out of a zillion pro/college/ HS games I’ve seen that were suspicious.
Baylor by far was almost criminal.

RJ Young is obviously an idiot looking for clicks.
Wonder if RJ was also one of the people who gave Rattler the dark horse as a FR and as a contender as a SO?
We all need to learn from this- taper expectations and let these kids develop.
From the article… let this sink in folks

“Even without having a career passing attempt, playing a snap with Texas, or most importantly winning the starting job yet, Ewers is garnering Heisman hype.”

I’ll raise you a couple- Ewers didn’t beat out the OSU starter and had 2 plays as a Buckeye in handing the ball off and now his name is up for Hiesman talk? 0 passing attempts. Come on.

The apocalypse is near. Repent ye idolaters.
