To. Orlano?

Was it one of the worst tackling games i have ever seen by any college team? YES! But i think ceedee lamb is also one of the top receivers this side of Tuscaloosa.

Our D creates 2 big TOs deep in our own territory and should have had a 3rd if Jamison could catch the int in the end zone in the 3rd. Soooners had a starting field position of their own 41 yd line. Read that again. They started on avg from THEIR OWN FREAKING 41! I just looked at the prediction thread and only 9 of 60 ppl predicted OU to get less than the 34 pts they scored.

Does our D need a lot of work, hell ya.

But we had a MASH unit out there yesterday that held it together well enough to give us a chance to win. Barking up the wrong tree here with Todd O and the D.

Orlando deserves the rest of the season to improve the defense. I know we’re young and won’t face a better offense than OU the rest of this season. I am just disappointed. I’ll get over it!

Maybe Cedee Lamb is just that good where nobody can tackle him. VY made defenses look bad too. OU simply has more talent and we’re narrowing the gap. We really have to get better and play physical to go 6-0 the rest of the season. Baylor in Waco will be really tough!

On the bright side our red zone D was pretty good in a relative sense. Possibly the plan was to just keep them in front of us between the 20’s and then stiffen and force FGs. Might have worked if our O had shown up at all.
I expected to see a few wide open receivers roaming free but I have to say it really grates on me to continually see poor angles and loose tackling technique.

Sam was asked in the post game presser what made this OU defense different than last year and Sam answered that (and I am paraphrasing) that they have great athletes and they let them swarm to the ball instead of trying to run a bunch of complex concepts.

I hope To__ Orlan_o is taking notes.

That was probably the worst tackling performance I’ve seen from a Tom Herman team. From top to bottom and from every single position coaches and players. If I’m going to point at Orlando at something it would be that we didn’t account for Hurts at all. I said in another thread before our game last week that we have to have someone there to spy on Hurts. I even suggested it be Tyler Owens since he’s got incredible speed (outran the first 40 meters against the fastest kid in HS history at the 6A state meet) we acted like Hurts wasn’t a threat to run or that he’s or not capable of running. He’s by far the key to that whole offense and they depend on his running ability. We should have taken that away and sent an extra athlete on blitz on average every other play to force him to pass quick or have him tuck the ball and try to run, which we would depend on Tyler Owens to be there to clean it up.

We allowed Hurts to sit back there comfortable and pick us apart through the air or run. We never took him outside of his comfort zone.

It’s about attitude. We just didn’t have it yesterday. We played timid and even looked scared to be aggressive. Our O-line weren’t holding them out and Sam was hanging onto the ball. I haven’t seen enough film to know if there wasn’t anybody open or Sam wasn’t seeing the field well enough. But their defense did to Sam what we were hoping to do to Hurts.

I think we can rebound but we got to get that attitude we had vs OU the first game last year and vs Georgia. Also get some healthy players back. But that also can‘t be an excuse. OU lost their best OL and didn’t miss a beat without him. If we don’t make the necessary changes and attitude then we will see the first year under Tim Herman of us going backwards.

Just thinking out loud. Who else could we get as a DC? Aranda won’t leave LSU for Texas. I also don’t think Herman will dismiss Orlando. But this defense needs improvement pronto. Herman May have no choice if this bad pass defense continues all season. We need to pressure QB’s inside 2 - 2.5 seconds on passing downs. That is not happening. I do think the secondary is improving but something must also be done about tackling in the open field.
Well, if Herman can't get the top DCs in the country to want to come be a part of his program at Texas, then maybe the program is in trouble and not trending upwards like many of us have felt.

The offensive game plan flat out sucked. The defense does have its flaws, but played well enough to win. The offense sucked. We run a reverse pass , a lateral to an OL in previous games; yet vs OU we run that vanilla bull crap a jr high team could defend. I hope the media asks Herman why.

No they didn't. The offense sucked too, but giving up over 500 yds and 34 points is not good enough to win.

Tackling, you know, hitting the guy and bringing him down? That’s what we simply could not do. I still say something was wrong with BJ. No way he plays flag football normally. Either he (and others) were afraid of penalties, something else was in his head, or he was hurt. Never more obvious to me than the score where he was coming to the guy and backed off at the goal line. That is NOT a normal Foster play. I suspect he is/was hurt.
Haven’t watched the tv version yet. If that changes my mind I’ll repent publicly

In the Big XII playing with less than 5 back does not lead to job security. 3 down should feature 1 blitzer, but you are screwed if the blitzer either is blocked or misses. Choose your poison and hope isn't a strategy.

That's easy, "Money Talks."

But, do we need to make a change at this point? Wait until the season is over and look at W-L and the ranking of the D overall, then decide to keep or discard. We've also had several secondary players out injured. The objective is to not have so many guys injured during pre-season practices and in early games, but that makes me think there are techniques and fundamentals issues.

Biggest concern is the terrible tackling techniques we see in games .....There is a fundamental problem. We are ducking our heads hitting with the top of our pads and helmets resulting in missed tackles and when we do make contact, shoulder and neck injuries. We also take terrible angles to the football, and have issues with fundamental defensive football.
I'm old school football....You have to ....
get lined up, fill your gap, keep gap integrity in the run game and pass rush, take proper angles to the football, keep outside leverage and containment.....We are doing NONE of those things the majority of the time.
Very poor coaching on the part of the Texas defensive staff. Sure we have injuries, but when you have personnel problems, the coaching points I brought up earlier are THAT MUCH MORE IMPORTANT to play with.
Herman needs to go hire Greg Robinson RIGHT NOW !!!!!! ....get him to tutor Orlando and his staff.

This is correct. One of the many reasons that Mike Stoops sucked so bad on defense was that he was telling his guys to read too many keys on every play. They were overwhelmed and didn't know what to do, therefore they looked lost in coverage.

OU's new DC is a "keep it simple" guy. There are downsides to that however. Misdirection running blays, double moves from the WRs can lead to wide open space against that type of defensive unit. But when the OL is getting blown up on every play, nothing else you do matters anyways.

Should not have been in, not saying changing results, but shouldn’t have been playing.
What a warrior! Couldn't lift that arm above his shoulder. Wonder how tender the hamstring is....hope he sits for KU and gets ready for TCU....but maybe he needs to rest up for hopefully CCG...

We did have some scheme problems and the D didn't play great. One good example is one of their 4th quarter drives, they lined up with 5 OL and no TE but 2 WRs at split end (even though nobody calls it that any more). Hurts was in the backfield with 2 RB, and they had Lamb, I believe, at slot WR. We were in a 3-3-5 and none of the 5 guys in the secondary were in position to give run support. So OU had an 8 : 6 advantage in the box. Then they motioned Lamb into the backfield and nobody on our defense moved, making it 9 : 6 in the box while we had 5 players guarding just the 2 WRs. Needless to say, they ran the ball easily for about 12 yards.

But if you told me beforehand "OU will have 10 points at halftime and 20 by the end of the third quarter", I would have said 80%-90% chance we win the game.

3 turnovers and a couple of key stops kept us in this game.
The D did not lose this game.
THIS!!! it's the lack of offense....winning this game was always going to be keeping up with their scoring and HOPEFULLY get a stop and get the last score....the offensive line, receivers dropping passes, record breaking sack totals, and HEROES bringing the balls out of the end zone to be tackled on the 5.....time after time after time.....that is why we came up short....

...when you say "wow, the game was not as close as the score" THANK the defense...they are the reason in 20 years people will think this was a close one!!!

...having said that....WTH was a safety at the 50 when the ball was being snapped at the 10???!!!

It is good enough to beat OU.
They had been averaging about 45 points.
We should have scored 42.
Three turnovers that led to no points.
Tackling was bad but D did enough to win.

If you add, "And turn it over twice" would your % change?

I'll probably get blasted for saying this, but anyone who thought the defense played well was not watching the same game that I was.
