Tim Irvin commits to Texas

There is serious smoke going around today that Auburn and Tavaris Robnson (who went with Muschamp) are going hard after Tim Irvin, still. If there is anybody out there who can pull him away from Charlie, that is T-Rob, because he apparently has had a very long relationship with Tim Irvine and Tim is very close to him (also trusts him; T-Rob is a nice guy too, it seems). The issue is that Auburn is running out of time because their classes start on the 14th (ours start only on the 20th). BUT, I believe these early enrollees can simply miss a few classes and enroll too. So, cross your fingers and pray that he shows up next week.

Irvin had tweeted last Sunday (the 4th), "I Touchdown In Texas January 12". But that may have changed. He then had a tweet on the 8th "Only a couple of weeks in miami" which makes no sense. Even if he is going to Auburn, he can't be in Miami till the 22nd.

Some sources close to Irvin apparently say that it is just too late for Auburn and that he is coming to Texas. The Auburn recruiting gurus seem to think that he might make a visit there on the 16th weekend. If he does go there the next weekend, then we are certainly in trouble. The general feeling now is that if Irvin makes it to Austin by the 14th or so, he is not going to Auburn.

The biggest problem is that none of the recruiting services really have solid sources within UT like is the case with the other Univs' recruiting reporters. So, we just don't hear much about what Charlie and gang are doing to counteract the push from Auburn. Just like the scare everybody had the night before Irvin committed, everybody is now nervous till he sets foot at Austin.

For my money, Tim Irvin is the guy form the Florida 5 that I wanted in the worst way. He is that kind of a playmaker, and I am dying to see somebody wearing #2 and making plays in the return game. Not to mention his versatility as a safety and nickel back. Not all DB recruits can do what he can. I want him....

But pray that he isn't having a change of heart. Time is on our side though.

I read that he was stopping for a visit to Auburn on his way to Austin, and that if he liked the visit, he might stay there.

T-Rob didn't have an $EC budget at Florida, but certainly will at Auburn. Don't be surprised if you start seeing last minute flips of otherwise committed prospects who were previously not interested in Auburn and had never even visited there.

There's a report from the Auburn 247 site that says they talked to one of his Miami coaches who said Tim did have a chat with Charlie on Saturday. It seems it was a positive for us. Charlie apparently did convey that he might not like (my wording!) Irvin taking a detour to Auburn on the way to Texas. Tim apparently does want to come to Texas but wanted to check out Auburn too (probably pressure from T-Rob there). There are even reports, not sure from where, that Auburn is asking for a summer enrollment rather than now (their classes start this week, and it may be getting late for him to make plans quickly enough now). My sense of it is that Charlie impressed upon him that he needs to be here right now, to get up to speed during spring and summer and have a chance to even start for us at nickelback, and might have left him wondering if it is worth taking the Auburn trouble over a more sure thing at Texas. We will see what transpires in the next 4-5 days, I am sure.

Anyway, I am glad that Charlie got a chance to talk to him, because the reports for the last 2-3 days have been alarming - that he was not even communicating with Texas, which seems to be untrue if the Auburn site's report is correct. Once again, recruit gurus in Austin are pretty clueless what is going on in Charlie's world, and have to rely on others.. But fasten your seatbelt and let's find out where this ride goes!

Auburn Sports Update @AuburnUpdate 7 minutes ago.

Confirmed: Tim Irvin is taking an official visit this weekend (1/16).
Auburn wants him at safety.

Also been seeing that Auburn is now willing to let him enroll now instead of summer.

I don't think Coach Strong wanting him to visit Auburn at all. This doesn't look good.

UT classes began Mon, Jan 12

Auburn classes began today, Wed, Jan 14

Can never fully decipher add / drop dates in terms of late enrollment past the first start date. But will apparently be late somewhere unless for some reason an early enrollment was begun at UT and is given some kind of grace period to sort things out.

Mon, Jan 19 is full holiday at UT campus, and Auburn. Classes resume next day.

Tough to imagine him not switching to Auburn, if he is visiting even after Charlie (reportedly, based on a Miami HS source) told him that he wouldn't be pleased to see that detour to Auburn. Unless he is so sold on Charlie and UT and is doing this only because he cannot say no to a nice coach (T-Rob) who has recruited him the longest since his freshmen days, I have to assume that he would be seriously considering a switch. We will know by next week.

Would certainly be a loss, in my opinion. I like play-makers like him. Tim Irvin is absolutely a playmaker. And I really really wanted to see a Metcalf type returning kicks wearing #2 once again. Chances look bleak that I will get my wish.

If Irvin comes on to Austin, that's great. But if he stops in Auburn and enrolls, I wish him luck. It may be that he wants to tell T-Rob face to face that he's sticking with his commitment and going to Texas. If that's the case, then I appreciate him maning-up to stand infront of the coach on his home turf. So, we'll see...

Just try to find good Mexican Food in Alabama, and the barbeque is too damn sweet. They probably put brown gravy on their chicken fried steaks. Good luck with that.

There's a report this evening from the Auburn 247 site that says Auburn doesn't necessarily feel they have Tim Irvin in the bag or anything. They are aware that he is making the visit basically because of T-Rob and Muschamp, the only TWO people he even knows up there. They know they have an uphill battle because Irvin has all his friends going to Texas and has an uncle just 2 hours away for a "support system" (and uncle Michael Irvin is supposedly quite happy that he is coming to Austin too, and there's a house to got to or party at, which I'm sure a kid like Tim would appreciate!). The Auburn report seems to indicate that Tim Irvin has no misgivings about Charlie and Texas, and wouldn't even consider it but for his relationship with T-Rob. But they feel Malzahn (whom he doesn't know) and the Auburn guys will need to blow him away to get him to commit to them.

By the way, there were some reports earlier today that Charlie never gave Tim Irvin an ultimatum like pulling our offer if he were to visit Auburn, or anything like the Auburn guys were trying to say. He apparently told Irvin that visiting Auburn is like not honoring his commitment, but that our offer still stands. So, he may have told Charlie that he just can't say no to T-Rob and had to do this. In that case, a visit to Auburn is not an indication that he was doing it against an ultimatum from Charlie. That means nothing is over.

All of that makes sense to me. We may not be out of this, and Charlie may still have more things in his favor than Malzahn does, in this battle. If Auburn can pull it off, good for them, but we may still dodge their best bullets and land Tim Irvin.

After a day and half of stay at Auburn, there seems to be no report of Tim Irvin's being blown away by Auburn yet. There were some reports from Auburn last night that they are not all that confident about him, but another that said they won;t be surprised if he commits to them as well. They have some 3 or 4 top-50 players all visiting this week and Irvin just doesn't seem to be that big a priority, at least for the recruiting reporters. But that doesn't mean he is not being recruited hard by the coaches. But no tweets flying around with Irvin talking to other players or others posting pictures with him, or anything of that sort. The recruits were all at their basketball game last night after a trip to Malzahn's house. Saw reports and pictures of other recruits on the Auburn sites but not much on Irvin. I think Irvin knows virtually nobody there, which is why it is all quiet.

I suspect that he is not going to announce a commitment to them when he leaves by mid-day today. He is required by rule to go home after the OV, and cannot just go to class immediately there. Our coaches are scheduled to visit him tomorrow in Miami, which is why I think he won't announce something today. We will probably know by tomorrow if he plans to travel to Austin to take classes by mid-week.

By the way, Tim Irvin had changed his twitter profile line on Friday while on his way to Auburn, to "I Will Be Attending The Univerisity Of _______!" He dropped the "Texas" he used to have there. So we can probably consider him a soft-decommit

[I am just coining the word, as they say "soft-commit" these days]

Some slightly more positive-for-Auburn reports surfacing this morning from their reporters that he may be close to flipping to Auburn. So keep your fingers crossed.

Auburn247's Ryan Bartow now says "Tim Irvin has committed to Auburn, flipping from Texas". DAMN. Unless we somehow manage to flip him back (very doubtful at this point), Florida 5 may have just become Florida 4.

FORK, I hate Auburn. I hate Muschamp

Damn, this hurts. No other way to put it. Tim Irvin was that one guy that I never wanted to lose in this class, because he is a playmaker. More for the kick return skills. Not as much of a loss as a defensive back, because his height is pretty iffy, though his unique skill set and early enrollment would have allowed him to play right into Diggs' spot, and he was a very hard hitter for his size too. But with Boyd and Hill looking pretty good as of now (Mark Field is still an option though not easy to get him to flip), I am sure Charlie will have somebody there in the end to play D. Where this really hurts me is in how exciting a player we just lost, as a kick returner. He would have been terrific.

I think we just need to get Newsome at WR and kick returner. We need him now.

Okay, let me preface this by saying I trust in the coaches talent evaluation, so I hope Irvin does not decommit and remains a Longhorn, but with that being said, I just don't get all the "he's an amazing, explosive playmaker" comments. After watching his highlight video, my first thought was, exactly how good is the competition he's been facing? All those spinning double back cut moves may look good against a bunch of 5'3" Caucasian altar boys but probably won't translate at the D1 level.

^^ Agree that there is doubt, and I also had the same doubt on whether his style would work at the next level, but we have lately had so few playmakers that I just wanted us to take a chance and see if Tim Irvin would turn out to be one. His 40 speed was pretty good but not at the top-end to say for sure that he would be a topnotch return guy, if I am not mistaken. We will see how he turns out. He did hit hard for his size in the defensive highlights. Enough people thought he had the potential to be a bit of a difference-maker player though.

Well, goodbye Tim, and have a good time in Auburn!

The diappointment for me as a fan is there wasn't something about coming here that really stood out for him. He's doing what he now wants to do, and that didn't turn out to be Texas and hooking up with the Florida Posse.

It's the first full recruiting year, and class, for this staff and program. After this year, I expect different reasons for a commit or decommit, or flips in either direction.

I also expect a shift toward earlier commits and a more curtailed process toward the end. Players are gonna have a better sense if they want in or not, perhaps sooner than later, and the sense of it may be if you don't get in there's a top player who wants in and will take your spot. I'm of course counting on a good product starting 2015!

This year's class is a group with a vision and with a lot of support for what the staff wants to build. There should be a shift in the process once the product is fully on the field.

Also Tim is an OOS and the goal is locking up Texas; with quality recruits out of state, catch as catch can. Still outstanding Texas high school players to close over the next two weeks. Fingers crossed that a quality 2015 season makes this process look different this time next year.
