This is America, speak English

This thread reminds me of a decent joke:

What do call a person who speaks more than one language?.....Bilingual

What do you call a person who speaks only one language?......An American

This is America

All countries south of USA do not speak English as the primary language.

That's not really relevant to this thread, as the hemisphere and the country USA are both America. If Estados Unidos Mexicanos can call itself Mexico than the United State of America can call itself America.

If you don't agree, then just change the thread to "This is the USA, speak English. . . .Which side of the line do you fall on?"

I don't think that there should be some govt mandate that you must learn English or a second language. You suffer the consequences.

I do think learning one would make yourself more marketable. Like I said, I think I won' a big bid in part because I speak Mandarin, sort of.

As for refusing to serve non-English speakers, the Libertarian in me says have at it. You suffer the consequences.

As long as you learn it young enough, you won't have an accent. But I think it's only natural to speak your native tongue among your natives. Sometimes you can invent a new language though, like Chinglish.

My wife is Indonesian. My in-laws in Indonesia speak very little English. I learn a little Bahasa Indonesia, they learn a little English. We both give and take. Works out well for everyone

Do you make it a habit to speak English in South America to piss off the bigoted uniculturalists there?

What is a uniculturist? Is it someone who believes that their country has a unique culture?

No reason to bother with learning English. There's a new software for cell-phones that will do all the translating for them.

There has been mention of those from Europe and etc that have embrased the American language. In my opinion, what we're talking about here is something entirely different. I believe that many that come from the south have no real desire to embrace the American culture as many would not give a rat's *** for the USA. The only concern is the dollars to be made here.

The bottom line is this. If there was a wealthier country adjacent to the USA that paid much higher wages; had an incredibly porous boarder and a political system that caters to American citizens, that country would likely have much of the same problem.

what do think is the percentage of people from hispanic decent in the lawn care business in Texas versus any other ethnic background?

Don't know. I would guess disproportionately high. Not all of them are illegal and I'd bet alot of them speak English.
