He could be a Tebow, someday. He is a very talented competitor who happens to be a freshman trying too hard with dumb and costly
mustakes. He simply is not ready between the ears.
By forcing him on the team and fanbase they are setting him up for more failure and it puts him in a bad place. When coaches fear quarterback controversy and try to protect their favorite quarterback over another they end up hurting both. It is understandable to bring a true freshman along slowly and give him time to develope. But when he is put in situations where he repeats game losing mistakes like he did last Friday, fans and some of his teamnates are going to turn on him. It really isn’t fair to him, but allowing these mistakes isn’t fair to the team either.
Sam needs to make better decisions. Each time he has thrown a pass up for grabs with an interception Tom says it won’t happen again. Then it does. Not good enough. It is time to ride the pine and grow up. He can be great, but getting repeated forgiveness for these mistakes is unacceptable and will not make him better.
Texas has two very fine young men at quarterback who are good enough, if and when the rest of the offense, including coaching, steps up. There is no need to cause either one to fail or give reason to transfer. Perhaps fans and coaches should learn from what happened 90 miles down the road when three quality QB’s walked. That happens when open and fair competion is not honored. Mack repeatedly passed on future NFL quartebacks in recruiting because of fear of potential quarterback competition. He lost a chance to play for a MNC when he stayed with Simms too long against CO in the B-12 championship. (His biggest downfall might have been his failure to manage the quarterback position.)
Over the years programs with great runs usually managed the quarterback position with development and planned transition.
