Texas vs WVU-round two

We are offensively challenged this year. I wish Sug would be about 20% more selfish and penetrate more for her own shots or the good dump off. For all her strengths, Joyner will never be a big offensive threat. Would be nice if her 10 foot jumper would go down sometimes. I hope Charli will develop her turnaround jumper. Jada may play good defense but brings little on offense. If Danni isn't hitting or can't get shots off, not much offense from her either. Would have been nice to see if Warren could have made a difference tonight. It would have been special to have Lashann and Sug working the backcourt together, but wasn't in the cards this year. Hopefully next. Dan Hughes had some savvy comments tonight about us needing to slow down and about Sug needing to take over. As usual, some will blame Karen for everything.

There's a responsibility that comes with the position (and the salary) particularly when the same characteristics and issues are present year in and year out. If we blame the players, we should ask ourselves who brought them there.

I don't mean to blame anybody. Just to say we have our strengths and our weaknesses, and last night things didn't go our way and we lost to a team that was playing very well.

I think WVU played decent... good defensively which is no surprise (or shouldn't be anyway), but I have to respectfully disagree with saying they played very well when they had a stretch of almost a quarter of the game (nine plus minutes) without scoring. We played the same way we've been playing all year... Other teams are improving and we are not.

We lost to a team that has inferior talent overall, who had only 8 players available, and a team without one McDonald's All American. He develops his talent as in Martin and Davenport. They just flew halfway across the country after playing on Saturday and beat us on our home floor while we continue to be a turnover machine (21 turnovers last night). The last four possessions for us were embarrassing. To say we are sorely lacking in effective half court offensive schemes and execution is an understatement. News bulletin.....good teams MAKE THINGS GO THEIR WAY!!!

Again low IQ basketball. For some reason our players think you can throw the ball through another person, roll it to them on the ground 50 ft away and you can hold the ball out like a skunk and no one will try to take it.

Do our coaches ever use film for teaching? It's just hard to believe Texas has the worst execution of any B12 team, or maybe all of Div 1 schools.

Our players look confused, tentative, and afraid to make a mistake. Combine that with standing around/no motion or spacing on offense and the PERPETUAL SUBSTITUTIONS and you have a perfect formula for turnovers....and it's been that way for years. We bring in all this highly-regarded talent and this is what we do with it. Funny I don't see this happening at other programs with similar recruiting classes (except Tennessee), or with far less for that matter. It's not the pupils, it is the teacher.

Sorry, but can you see ANY elite coach, i.e. Geno, Muffet, Tara, Vic, Mulkey saying "last night things didn't go our way and we lost to a team that was playing very well."????? ANY team that has that passive mentality will never be elite!!!!!

Well, what did Muffet say when they got beat by an unranked team last week? What did Tara say when they got beat by a low ranked team last week? They probably included in their statements that the other team played very well. I'm not saying we don't make a lot of mistakes. Turnovers are a perpetual problem. But, I don't buy for one minute that we have superior athletes to Tynice Martin or Naomi Davenport. It's just not true. I don't care if they were McDonald's All-Americans coming out of high school or not. Those high school rankings are incredibly subjective and are often off the mark.

For a team with so much talent they do not look well coached. If you watch other like teams with like talent we are behind them. Tenn is the only team with as much talent that doesn't look better than us.

We have a good bit of talent, but there are a number of teams around the country this year that have more talent, IMO. Losing Higgs, Sedona's injury, the failure of Patterson and Rellah to work out on our team for whatever reason, Warren's injury, Joyner's shaky shooting. Those are just facts. If WVU is so much better coached than we are, how the heck did they let us beat them in Morgantown in a game that wasn't as close as last night's game?

In my opinion, we look pretty much like every other team out there with the exception of ND and UConn. I don’t know the technical term to call it but those two teams seem to move more, pass more and no player looks to be locked into any one particular position once the ball gets past halfcourt. Anyone want to educate me on what it is exactly that ND and UConn are doing? I wish that was the basketball we would play. I saw it briefly with Gail’s teams while she was here.

Are you SERIOUS? Are you really comparing our season long defficiencies to those one-off blips? Are you really comparing Aston's ineptitude to McGraw and Tara? Get out of here...:rolleyes1:

Excuses, excuses, excuses...wonder why you don't hear Vic Schafer at Miss St. whining about the four starters he is missing from last year or the loss of Bibby to injury this year? Oh, and let me enlighten you... it's not just WVU that's a much better coached team than us, EVERY TEAM IN THE BIG 12 is better coached than us. Let KA switch rosters with every team in conference and she wouldn't win a game -- including Baylor.

Overall they were amazing from beyond the arc. Martin literally can’t miss. I couldn’t believe we had our slowest players defending her most of the game. Sutton finally took over and slowed her down. And in the 4th quarter we double teamed her. I believe three WVU players fouled out. We didn’t take advantage of it - and still could have won. Then we had three boneheaded offensive possessions at the end. Maddening.

A lot of the turnovers come from playing too fast. Our team is not as fast as last year's. The players replacing Ariel and Brooke are not as fast as they are. I think we should slow down, minimize the turnovers and play within ourselves.

It appears to me Sutton is fully capable of going one on one and scoring frequently. Maybe we should allow her to do that more often, as opposed to what we are doing now.

Any chance we could all just decide to be respectful to one another? Asking for a friend. :whiteflag:
My points made are not intended to be disrespectful to any other poster. If they came across as such i apologize for the misunderstanding. I am, however, very adamant about my feelings. I've been following this program since 1980 when I was a kid and I'm sick and tired of the mediocrity. It's unacceptable.

I’ve been following since 1983 when I was a student. A few years back - Karen’s first season - I was among the worst on here with complaints and opinions of how she should do this or couldn’t do that. Ultimately I realized I could offer my opinion or ask questions that didn’t require me to insult or bad mouth coaches or players.

There are hundreds of college teams out there and every year Karen gets her team competitive with the best of them even if it’s not always a W. IN MY OPINION... She’s a good coach. Maybe not the best. Definitely not the worst but certainly not a bad coach. She just might not be meeting some of our expectations which could easily be more a statement about us than about her.

When in doubt add a IMHO after your post. It tends to calm the waters. :beertoast:

Hopefully we can all agree :ousucks:

Sometimes I want a BU Sucks emoji, but then I decide it would only make it appear like Baylor is relevant. They aren’t.

I think a lot of it goes back to personality Sug has always been more of a pass first PG. As a PG you have to have a good handle on your team and know when you need to get players involved or be more of a scoring threat. It’s clear that this Team needs Sug to be more of a scoring threat because she’s really the only player on the team that can consistently create/get her own shot.

THIS is where the team misses Lashann the most!
No doubt about it. I’ve obviously criticized Coach Aston but the reality is that it doesn’t matter what offense you run. In order to have success and beat good defensive teams like West Virginia you have to have players that can make plays/create and get their own shot off the dribble. Lashann is one of the best players in the country off the dribble.

Man I miss her.

What a painful game to watch. Friends and I have concluded that this team simply is not a team. They don't seem to like each other on the court nor do they pay attention to well, much of anything happening there. If we had a point for every no-touch shot Joyner has clanged off the rim, we'd have a few more wins. Or, for every casual pass to no one ... they seem to each play in a separate world. Been a fan since the '80s, and this team has the look of the final Jody teams and final Gail teams - D-I level players without cohesion or purpose. (Tynice Martin looked dis-interested, too - thinking about the draft, perhaps.) This can happen to any program or coach. Look at the records of top coaches - only Pat and Geno have been dominant since Title IX and they both had down years, for them, between runs. Andy Landers is in the HoF, his teams went to the Final Four 4-5 times, but never won. Tenn was in the F4 6-7 times before winning. Texas won a kazillion SWC games, but only 1 NC. Sports are cyclical, but I sure hate it when MY team is spiraling down. (Needed to vent, thanks. :hookem:)

Even though LaShann is out this year.
We still should be playing better.
No.1 Problem to fix. Stop forcing pass's, that are not there.
No.2 Problem to fix. Stop trying to play so fast.
No.3 Problem to fix. Stop standing around on Offense.
No.4 Problem to fix. Mix your defense up.
You have the player's to really play a good half court game.

Disagree about Martin. She was amazing and hungry. She ate Texas alive.
