The Horns look to keep the win streak going as they finally are back home for a three game set with San Antonio's UIW who sit at 9-5 on the year. The games are Friday at 6:30, Saturday at 2:30, and Sunday at 1:00, all on LHN. Expect the new regular starting rotation of Hansen, Stevens, and Gordon for the Horns.

I leave it to Chop to give us the detailed breakdown our friends from San Antonio but here is the preview from their website:

Any news on what was with Gordon and the trainer's visit to the mound? He had an elbow problem in high school that required surgery. Hopefully it's nothing serious.

Difficult to retrieve scouting reports on him. Apparently, there's more than 2-3 Michael Garzas in Texas. He's from Corpus Christi. Pitched for the Arroyo Seco (Ca.) Saints in Summer league baseball, where he was one of their top relievers. Throws fastball to the low 90s. Has some good movement. Plenty of strikeouts; a strikeout pitcher. Prone to give up the occasional big inning. Occasional wild pitch and beanball. Threw 7 scoreless frames with 7 strikeouts, allowing only 2 hits, vs. S. Dakota State recently.

"Pitcher of the Week – Michael Garza, UIW – Senior – Pitcher – Corpus Christi, Texas
Garza struck out a pair of Jackrabbits in each of the first two frames and, after getting a single run from his offense, cruised from there to the 1-0 victory. He never allowed a SDSU batter to reach second base as the Jacks were 0-for-4 at the plate with a runner on. Garza never slowed toward the end of his outing, facing the minimum over the final three innings with two more punchouts. This marks the first career weekly honor for Garza."

the reporter below is cute, but she probably won't be winning a tv journalism prize anytime soon...

From Houston Northshore High School. Fastball in the lower 90s. Likes to mix it with a change up. Competent curveball. Another strikeout pitcher. Played in the West Coast Summer league for Victoria HarbourCats in BC, Canada, against the likes of the Wenatchee Applesox, where he was reportedly one of the best pitchers and really racked up the strikeouts and showed good control. While Garza is the staff ace this year, Celestino's performance over his career is nothing to sneeze at.

4.83 career ERA
58 career Strikeouts

A smallish petite fellow. Reportedly, sometimes can throw a fastball up to the low 90s (with the wind at his back). Obviously, not a power pitcher. Relies on movement and control. Was almost as well known in high school for his bat and fielding as for his pitching. From Atascosa, TX; played at San Antonio, Southwest HS. Known to give up some big innings from time-to-time. Earlier this year, the Houston Cougars bashed Zavala for 7 hits and 7 runs in 3.2 innings. Played for the Wenatchee Applesox in Summer league.

Looks like Skye and Daly are both batting their way out of their slumps. 6-1 us. Going to the 4th inning.

Great play on D by Faltine. Hansen retired 10 in a row.

Now a double play—Faltine to Daly to Titanic.

They’re pitching around Ivan—another walk. 2 on. No outs. Our offense is shredding them. 92 pitches for Garza and we’re just in the 4th inning. He walked Silas! Bases loaded and Staley comes to the plate!!!

Oh, and now UIW’s coach finally goes to his bullpen…
Burn the crap out of his ace’s arm in what is clearly a losing effort in a non-conference regular season game first…

Skye is up. Hit a double last at bat. Coldest bat this side of Siberia. (See if that works yet again ..)

17-2
After 5 innings
9 run 5th inning

Now that the bottom of our lineup has thawed bats, nobody can stop this awesome offense!

Nice work Pete and the pitching staff, as usual.

Coach is putting Blair in.
Get his confidence back. He’s still young and learning the ropes. We may end up needing him in the regionals. We need to develop as many of these young pitchers as we can.
Schusler in to catch.

This infield is living up to the lofty standard set by previous generations of Texas Longhorn fielders.

Blair hitting the mid 90s on his fastball, then working in the change up pitch well. The young man has talent—he just got off to a really rough start early this year.

Got the strikeout for the 3rd out. 2 scoreless innings of pitching for Blair.

Skye Messinger with two doubles tonight! Yeah, I’d say he’s hitting out of his slump. And now a single for Skye. Now this is the sort of hitting we brought him down from KU for. If Messinger is hitting well, we have Faltine right behind him in the lineup, and Trey has been bashing it all year. The back of the lineup is really looking up. This is what we’ve been needing offensively.

Enter Stewart with his crazy slider/breaking stuff and upper 90s fastball with movement that has the MLB scouts drooling.

Ok. I know he really screwed the pooch last outing, but Stewart’s slider/breaker drops as much, and as fast, as any pitcher I can remember here on the 40. I think I can see what all the hoopla on Stewart is from the MLB folks.

See ya sucker! 1-2-3 Stewart retires the side. The bottom just fell out of that breaking ball for the final out (strike out) all at once and right at the plate. It just disappeared right in front of the batter. His fastball is also really fast--and it moves. We get this guy experience and confidence, and he could end up the #1 pitcher on our staff if he sticks around a few years.

Coach will let DuPlantier close here in the 9th. Gotta build his confidence back.

Andre is throwing some nice breaking balls and living low in the zone. Just don’t start walking batters and hang any meat up high in the zone buddy, and you’ll be all right…

And that’s the game—line out to Faltine.
