Texas Tech Series

Take aways:

The bats can be white hot one day, and cold the next.

Grubbs will make a push to be a weekend starter this year, maybe soon.

Howard is pretty good, but these sophisticated hitters on Top 25 level teams can hit him hard.

Brown made some great catches and at least one costly muff.

Powell is very good at every aspect of the game (but we already knew that).

Thomas is in a mini-slump.

Heuer may be a corn fed lunk who has spent a lot of time at the all-you-can-eat buffet, but he's also a very good college starting pitcher. Tech should make him their #1 starter. He'd be our #2 pitcher this year without question.

Tomorrow on the mound for Tech: Washburn - over 8.00 for his ERA.

You won't need to go to Luby's in Lubbock tomorrow to see some chopped liver.

I'd be surprised if we lose tomorrow or don't score at least 8-10 runs (maybe a lot more). But I've been surprised a few times this year...............

The same thing for football applies to baseball, offense can’t carry a team through a season by itself. Have to be well rounded, pitching and defense has to be there to compete at a high level consistently. Unfortunately, our pitching and defense is shaky top to bottom and offense goes cold too often.

tomorrow is a crucial game.

Chop,

Question for you - SS muffs the ball which rolls into LF; runner going to third gets stop sign by coach and before rounding third, turns to LF to see where the ball is. Indication that kid doesn't trust coach's judgement?

Maybe. He could get in trouble running through the sign though. If that’s what he does.

Running the bases he should get his *** kicked for taking his eye off the coach and particularly for looking back. Not even my 12 & 14 year old AllStars would do that ****. For me it shows a total lack of respect and confidence in the coach. Having watched him coach base runners, I can understand, but it is wrong to look back unless you're building a portfolio to take to CDC.

When i coached both select softball and baseball, the player should watch the third base coach and follow the hand signals.
1. One signal means to slide (close play),
2. another signal means to round the base and find the ball (no play),
3. and third hand signal means to stand up and stay in contact with the bag (the ball is headed to your base or the infield but you will be easily safe, no reason to risk injury).

for #2, When you ask your players to round the bag and find the ball he is looking for a MISTAKE that he know's 100% will allow him to take the next base safely. I instructed my players to make a split second decision on that mistake, it could have been a bobble of the ball, the player dropped it, throw was clearly off line etc.
The point of it is that if the player is waiting for me to send them, we could miss out on a run or extra base spent on the amount of time it took for me to see it, the player to see my signal (and you don't want to be yelling it cause now you are notifying the other team of your intentions) and this minute amount of time could be the difference in making it or not. This works all the way through high school.

Only time a player would get in trouble is when the player completely blew through a sign.

I only put out there what I used because what you described could be the same. Not sure what you saw but if they did indeed blow through a sign, its inexcusable.

fan,

I understand, but I want my runners looking at me not over their shoulder or almost running backwards BEFORE they get to the bag. One of the first things that made me believe that the Perce hire was wrong was all the base running errors since he arrived. I believe in being aggressive on the basepaths. Force the opponent make a play.

Granted kids more often than not will not make the throw; professionals should and will. These are professionals.

We have made a few base running errors, in fact Thomas has been picked off three times I think. and now that you brought that up, i do remember the base running errors that were so bad was that last year or the year before??? I agree, that amount of base running errors was inexcusable. There should be very few. Caught stealing? yes, it happens, but picked off? or over running a base? heck no.

Runner did not "blow thru" the stop, but turned back to look Pierce was a third the way down the line, and the kid turned his entire upper body before getting to third. I would prefer he round the base before making the decision. In fact there was no one covering third so an overrun would have not hurt.

Yes, I am knit picking; yes, I do not think Pierce is a good coach. Yes. I want a new coach, but as I've said before, WHO?

I've been on the fence with Pierce, he's had some good teams, i really thought this years team would get about where last years team would get, a super regional with a chance at Omaha and even go deep in Omaha. Not likely.

Will Mercer going down hurt, i even thought they could overcome that but with Witt AND LBJ's struggles, it's impossible. LBJ and Witt HAD to be true 1 and 2 starters for us.

Can it turn around? sure.
Can this team be dangerous by the end of the season? Sure, one of the most dangerous but it's looking less and less likely with the pitching struggles with not only the starters but the bullpen.

NO ONE is pitching well. Ace had a good day today but his ERA is still above 4. Hurley's ERA is higher than last years, he's above 5 now. Grubbs is looking about as promising as any of them and his era is above 3. No one is below a 3 beside a couple of lucky guys who get pulled as soon as they give up the runners that they weren't accountable for.

The team ERA keeps creeping up, its almost identical to last years ERA right now. we do get an easier schedule the rest of the year besides, TCU, so maybe it ends better, idk.

We're in a deep **** creek with out a paddle right now and I was never worried about the defense but the errors are particularly concerning given it's by an experienced team.

So what should I put you down for:

1. A David Pierce ball cap
2. A Rodney Terry t-shirt
3. A Pete Kwiatkowski poster
4. A Shaka Smart coffee mug (in either UT or Marquette gear)

?

Neither Pierce nor Terry is single handedly responsible for losing a FOOTBALL game to OU. Unless Kwiatkowski pulls a perfect imitation of 1979 Leon Fuller in the Cotton Bowl in October, he will always be #1 on my list because I can NEVER turn that loss into a win.

LBJ will settle in. We know he's got it.

Witt may only be a guy who throws a couple of innings per game, we'll see.

As we just saw, Howard is vulnerable to getting hit hard by the better batting lineups we'll face, and may only be able to go 4-5 innings, especially against good competition. Same could be said about Hurley, but Hurley does put some good sauce on his curveball, a breaking ball the really drops hard. So I'd say Hurley's "stuff" is better than Howard's at this point.

Grubbs looks promising, but he hasn't put in enough innings and games to prove it up just yet. I have confidence he will, and he did well today. He may soon get his chance this year to see if he can be a weekend starter. If not, then he's a guy that will keep developing and keep improving and who may be a starter as an upperclassman.

Ace W eats up innings and lots of them.

Boehm remains one BAMF unless and until his future performance proves he's not.

Fontenot is solid, though not spectacular.

Shaw is mostly quite good, but he has some really bad off nights. Same for Harrison.

True Freshmen Tumis and Hamilton both have fantastic "stuff", some of the best on the staff. But they still have the brains of True Freshmen on the mound--that's expected, as that's what they are. They also still have some control issues (especially Tumis). If Tumis gets it together, he'll be in the big leagues one day.

Very good question, there is no Augie Garido out there.

The other coaches I would consider are already coaching at their alma mater and not going to leave or don't have enough data on them yet.

List of folks I would talk to:

Brian O'Connor (Virginia) - seasoned and successful. Have no idea if he would like to move, originally from Iowa.
Saarloos (TCU)? Pros: In his third season, may win the big XII and some say the best team in the country. Cons- limited resume.
Steven Trout (Tx St.)? Similar to Sarloos but a Texas boy.
Heefner (DBU) - pros: consistently good over a long period of time with less at a small school. Cons: hasn't been beyond the supers and has coached for a long time already.
Justin Haire (Campbell University) - does quite a bit with very little.

Unlikely to be any of them. CDC has history with Schlossnagle but doubt he would be a candidate or consider leaving A&M.

Would also keep an eye on Rob Vaughn at Alabama. Very short resume so not likely a candidate but another Texas kid that might be willing to come home.

I would keep an eye on someone in the $EC. CdC tends to pick from the Conference Texas is/will be competing [Sark (Alabama), Schaefer (Miss aggy)].

I didn't mention anyone else in the SEC cause i didn't think they were available but by all means, Tim Corbin would be at the very top of my list.

Oddly enough Jay Johnson would not, no disrespect but not sure what won the championship last year, NIL or actual baseball coaching/recruiting? I wouldn't really be interested in anyone else, Schlossnagle would be 3rd on my list from the SEC but behind O'Connor, Sarloos, Trout and Haire overall. (Kevin O'Sullivan being #2 choice from SEC)

but it's all a moot point cause we have Pierce in his 8th season trying to figure out the pitching staff and has his hands full.

Agreed but I was looking at it earlier this week, Texas doesn't have any more meat on their schedule beyond Tech and TCU, unless OU or OSU improve. Looking tough to even host a regional at this point. If Texas loses the series this weekend, they are not likely to win the one against TCU, probably means they won't be hosting.

IDK, i'm not an expert, just trying to play the probability out rationally.
Without major improvement, they dont deserve to host. This is a super talented team so it makes no sense.
