Texas Tech Series

Grubbs - sinker/slider pitcher; lives low in the zone (mostly); generates lots of grounders; trusts his fielders and lets them make outs. Occasional K also.

Ground out to Powell. Two away.

Ground out to O'Dowd. Three away. To the 7th.

5-2 Tech.

Good job Grubbs!

I'll contrast Grubb's style with Howard. Howard throws stikes--not many walks, but he sure likes to drive that fast ball right down the middle of Broadway, or leaves it hanging up in the zone a lot. Howard lives dangerously. Grubbs likes to put it low. That sinking curve/slider is his bread and butter getting ground outs.

With Howard's good control, Coach ought to really work with him spotting it on the corners. Now that's easier said than done, especially with this ump whose strike zone is smaller than Aunt Mitzi's runt Pomeranian.

Enter Ryan Free for Tech.

He has good numbers against grossly inferior competition. We'll see if that lasts.

Ughhh.

Ball goes off Brown's glove, then off the wall. Double for them. 1 out, man on 2nd.

Pierce to talk with Grubbs.

That would not have been an easy catch for Brown, but it was makeable at the warning track/wall.

Boehm is warming up. Grubbs will stay in there for now.

Back for a few minutes

Top of the 8th

2 outs, 2 men on. Belyeu at bat.

Hard line drive right to the RF. That's it. To the bottom of the 8th. One more chance, and a significant rally will be required.

7-2 Tech.

Bottom of the 8th

Grubbs staying out there.

Every run he has given up today has resulted from an error or other misplayed ball.

Powell gets the 3rd out.

Grubbs and (most of) the D has kept us in the ball game.

1 last chance in the 9th. Need 5.

Jack's up.

Wild pitch. Gets by the catcher. Shoos to 2nd. Shoos on the loose some more.

:yes::yes::yes::yes::yes:

Tech fumbles the ball.

(Tech 3B with an E - ball bounced off his glove and into LF.)

Gaspo reaches 1st. Shoos to 3rd.

Men on the corners. 1 away.

Now at bat: Thomas.

Uggggghhhhh

Thomas - struck out looking on a breaker (good pitch)

1 chance left - at least it's Powell.
