Texas @ OU 02/28/2024

Just out of curiosity, I looked up the three point attempts by top 20 teams.

Texas is dead last, 11.5/game (more than I expected!), #344th out of 349 D1 teams.
SC - 16.4/game
Ohio State - 21.3
Stanford - 21.1
Vrigina Tech - 25.8
Iowa - 28.8
USC - 21.6
UCLA - 21.7
LSU - 13.3
UConn - 19.5

Out of the top 25, LSU is the only team to attempt less than 16 three's a game. And 20 of the top 25 average at least 20 a game. Sure SC and LSU are the last couple champions, but even Staley has her women taking 5 more a game than Vic.
Wow... thanks for doing this research. It confirms what we thought was probably true. 344th? It's almost like we are playing a different game than others. Generally speaking, we have to make quite a few more baskets than the opposing team to either match or exceed their score.

Well, in our 2 games against OU, a final 3-point basket made by them in the waning seconds put the nail in our coffin. If we had needed a 3-point shot to tie the game, I certainly don't have confidence that we could execute it under pressure.

In our home losses to OU and Baylor, as well as KSU, we couldn't complete the comebacks down the stretch because we don't have reliable plays designed to take 3-point shots, let alone make them. While we're going for the high-percentage 2-point basket, it takes more possessions to cut into the lead; and when time is running out, you just don't have enough possessions.

And, our guards allowed OU's guards to score 51 of their team's 71 points.
Which has nothing to do with shooting 3’s, which was a topic of discussion above, nor does it have anything to do with Vic’s desire to get the ball into the bigs in most games, also a topic noted above.

Like everyone, I was deeply disappointed with the outcome of the game. I had to pace the living room for the entire 4th quarter – I was too nervous to sit down.

Yes, the travelling call on Madison was a phantom foul – and a really terrible way for the ref to change the outcome of a game. That said, after every single game losing fans think the refs suck. So, it is what it is.

In every loss except maybe one, I thought our lack of three-point shooters killed us. I hope Vic can recruit a gunner who can hit anywhere from the floor. We can’t be dead-last in the country in this category and win championships. Foul trouble was also an issue – but it was for OU as well.

I love this team. If Vic got to start over with a clean slate and put together the pieces he needed to build a Final Four team, I don’t this is the makeup he would choose. With Rori, we’d be one of the top 2 teams in the nation. However, because Vic is a great coach – one of the best – he’s made it work. Credit to OU – they beat us twice. They’re the champs.

My hope is Texas will make a deep run in the tournament and who knows, maybe a Final Four.

Well this night just sucks. First the refs take the game from us with the phantom travel call. And now this.

I don't see hateful comments coming from the posters in this thread. Maybe there is some banter on other social media platforms? We actually had a good game plan and played really well. Unfortunately, the one fundamental area we broke down in cost us the game.

There are some nasty comments on Reddit about Texas. UT is not well-liked on there so it stands to reason. Also, some posters on X were quite rude in their comments.

This board does well overall in commenting on games, save for a couple of posters who rear their heads after a loss to needle and poke. We've only had four losses, though, so they are mostly quiet.

That's not the order our dialog unfolded.

I said Vic states often that "you win with guard play". You replied it's not only about scoring, and Vic would probably prioritize defensive guard play. I replied that OU's guards scored 51 points against our guards.

I was referring to other commenters in this thread speaking about the guards not taking 3’s. I pointed out Vic’s game plan regarding the emphasis on feeding the post, then you chimed in.

I’m sorry to see that Madison’s Mom is letting the internet get under her skin. Reddit and Twitter are cesspools. I’ve never spent much time on Reddit and stopped Twitter over a year ago (I frequented Twitter constantly). I can’t imagine how painful it would be as a parent to deal with. It’s people who are either idiots or simply trying to get attention by being provocative. They know NOTHING!

My advice for their own sanity and wellbeing would be to stay off those platforms or at least remember what they see on there is FAR from the truth or the consensus. Perspective.

Frankly I don’t see how Madison could be legitimately criticized for her play. Like Vic, I wouldn’t trade her for anyone. I love her game and watching her play. Just wait until she’s able to play in her natural position.

Same here, but I'd say just wait until she's able to play with another (Rori) who will prevent opponents from being able to heavily key on her.

Texas is averaging .357 from 3, .533 from 2.

Those 20 shots get you 21.4 pts from 3, 21.3 pts from 2. But getting 3's opens up the inside and thus the 2 pt. % will go up, and vice versa. Just like the pass opens up the run and the run opens up the pass. If you're balanced and the defense can't key in on one, both percentages will go up.
You are making the assumption that the 3 percentage holds with more attempts. It almost never does. Hence OU percentage. And ours when we take more attempts.

2021 - 3pt shots: 164/509 .322
2022 - 3pt shots: 169/466 .363
2023 - 3pt shots: 147/435 .338
2024 so far - 3pt shots: 90/236 .381
Looks like it's a personnel driven choice. We are strong inside.

Right there with you. I turn the sound off at times, drops the intensity down a notch, cuts down on the EMS visits.
We ended with 2 girls fouled out, two with 4 and Madi with 3. We really hadn't been in foul trouble all year, way too many fouls in that game for both teams. They called it really tight for such a big game, which hurt us more since we aren't as deep. We had to play rusty Hadi and Jak, and had key personnel on the bench due to foul trouble.

Vic went basically 7 deep last night so in overtime we could have been down 4 or 5 out of the 7. Yikes.

I don't make any ASSumptions. We can only go with the data available. And likewise you don't know if the 3 point % won't increase, especially against a weaker defense like ou.

So I’ll just agree to disagree. Math leaves little room for opinion. If I’m coaching, I’ll put up a bunch of two’s before I’ll put up a bunch of three’s. When you’re coaching I’ll respect your decision to do whatever you like. Assumption is a word. ASSumption is an opinion and a poorly developed one at that.

Totally agree, plus, we don’t know anything about the posters - unless you follow Stephanie and have inside info. Since when have Tornado Bait (my new favorite rude reference, thanks to Hornfans) fans been kind to Texas athletes? Tacky posts are probably coming from clueless yahoos who showed up at the game for whatever free merch was available or routinely attack women’s sports/athletes.

Sort of related - when anyone flashes a horns down, I thank them by pointing out that every time they do so, they promote TEXAS and obscure whatever crappy school they support. Crickets.

BYU is toast. I expect.

Madison has the potential to be a good 3-point shooter and will likely have good judgment about when to send one up. Probably the most value from 3-pointers, no math involved, is that they excite the fans and appear in highlight reels - both good for the sport.
:hookem:

With the latest reveal OU finally gets the last 4 seed. Texas dropped to a 2 seed and overall 6th. I doubt many of us envisioned a 1 or 2 seed when Rori went down I know I certainly didn’t. Texas still has a chance for a 1 seed and of course OU could fall out of the top 16 if not careful.

I suspect after last night, Texas would really want the conference tournament title.

He keeps saying you win with guard play but Gonzales and Shay never look for their shot they are just out there for defense. They are both very inconsistent.
It wouldn't say "never". They've had some great games.

The thing is, we basically have 3 players who are playing as guards -- Booker, Holle, and Gonzales. If one of them is struggling, either the other two need to have big games, our our front court players need to turn it up. When two of the three guards are struggling offensively, there just isn't anyone to bring in off the bench that is a better option.

They way Shay and Shaylee were draining their perimeter shots early in the first quarter, I felt really optimistic about our chances to win the game. But, OU"s defense really tightened up after that, it seemed. They stuck with them like glue and both of them can't really create their own shot without space.
