After a terrible start, Gary game back to finish the half well. That's encouraging. Now we can put Conner back in and see what happens. It's far from over, but it would be nice if AJ started hitting.
Only hope is that Dorsey and Rose are hobbled, which isn't exactly how I like to see the game played. Maybe they'll cool off from the FT line and we can chip away, but honestly, we don't exactly have the personnel to score at the other end when (if) they miss FTs.
Bad matchup, no big deal. Memphis is a fantastic team. I think Tennessee had the athletes AND the size. Few others do.
Yeah, but Tennessee plays stupid at times. I'm impressed with Memphis. They have bought into this "system", as simple as it might be, and they are STOUT.
OK, can Texas come back playing 3 small guards? I don't think so. In this game, the Horns' lack of size is really telling. If the execution was a lot more drive and dish, instead of drive and get it swatted back down, maybe the three guard combo could work.
Maybe.
I don't know, but I tend to think the team has to rotate Mason and Abrams with three bigs to play with these guys. Of course, most of us talking about the team last fall were hoping to eventually see that kind of rotation this year, and they haven't really built up to it.
Anyway, I'm not giving up yet, and Barnes is a lot smarter than I am when it comes to basketball, so we'll see what happens in the second half. Go Horns.
I'm not ready to write them off, but they have to play with some composure, especially on the offensive end. They looked discombobulated that first half, but if DJ gets it back together and Abrams knock down a couple three's early, we can make it a game. Of course, the big and athletic Memphis team is not going to make it easy.
bierce, I thijnk you're right. Mason needs to be on the floor a lot given his effort so far, maybe alternating more with DJ than AJ (yeah, that sounds weird), and then Johnson, James, Atchley, and PIttman need to log some serious minutes.
I'm not giving up by any stretch, but it sure is obvious that Memphis has better players than we do. Coming back against this team would make this one REALLY special win.
I think the D tightened up quite a bit for the Horns in the last few minutes as they settled into a 2-3 zone. That helps negate the guard size issue, and I imagine Barnes will be sticking with it.
What concerns me for the second half is the offense. I've seen very little penetration-and-kick from Augustin and Abrams, and that's our bread and butter. The Memphis length advantage on that side of the floor really seems to have our guards intimidated. Hopefully they can figure something out, but I don't know what that would be. I imagine whatever workable solution there is would involve getting Dozier and Dorsey in foul trouble, but even that might not be enough to clear the driving and passing lanes.
We are having a really hard time getting drives into the lane because they are playing good defense. And when we do drive and draw contact it's not being called. Makes it hard to be effective, which sucks because it's such a huge part of our offense.
Well it was a good season overall. Hope everyone decides to come back and take the final step next season. It was a fun team to watch. We just need more size. Tiny back court really hurt us today.
according to the CBS highlights at every deadball and going into comercials memphis is leading the horns 266-0.
